Daniel Londono
Sgt. Daniel Londono fought and died for the freedom we so often take fro granted while on night patrol in Iraq on the evening of March 13, 2004.
Daniel had always wanted to be a solider and joined the Army after high school. He was scheduled to get out of the Army in August and had hopes of returning to his beloved Boston and attending college.
He was a living example of what a man should be. He was a leader, a friend, a loving son and brother. He loved life and his family and was ready to die for his country.
He is survived by his mother, Iwona Londono of Boston, Mass.; father, Bernardo Londono of Columbia, South America; sister, Diana Londono of Boston; grandmother, Stanislawa Demkiewicz of Boston; special cousin, Maciej Maciejewski of Boston; and girlfriend, Heather Butler of Fuquay-Varina, N.C.
A note from Heather: He was my best friend, and I will love him forever. Daniel was a gift from God, and I was blessed to have him in my life for even one minute.
God Bless America and God Bless the soldiers of the 504th. May God see them safely home. Forever your girl.
Virginia Taylor Craig
Mrs. Virginia Taylor Craig died on March 12, 2004, at Windsor Point in Fuquay-Varina. She was born on July 21, 1909, in Morganton, Burke County.
Her parents were Albert Jackson Taylor and Viola Hunter Taylor of Morganton. Her grandparents were Lawson A. and Candice Eply Taylor of Silver Creek in Morganton and Charles J. and Katherine Hensley Hunter of Nebo, N.C. Mrs. Craig was predeceased by her brother Benjamin Hunter Taylor of Chicago, Ill.
Mrs. Craig was married to the late Clarence Hamilton “Bob” Craig of Lenoir, who worked for the Carolina and Northwestern Railroad until 1932 when he began service with the transportation department of Broyhill’s Furniture Company of Lenoir until his retirement in 1968.
He died in 1985. Mrs. Craig graduated from Weaver College and went to work in the Burke County Courthouse. She was a member of the staff of Broyhill Furniture Factory from 1940 until her retirement in 1977. She was active in the First United Methodist Church of Lenoir, the Business and Professional Women’s Association, the Seniors Citizens Association, and the Woman’s Club.
She remained active in Lenoir until the age of 91 when she entered Windsor Point, a retirement home in Fuquay-Varina.
Her daughter is Virginia Craig Downs of Raleigh, a retired member of the English faculty at N.C. State, and her son-in-law is Murray Scott Downs, a retired member of the academic administration at N.C. State. In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Craig leaves grandchildren, Alan Craig Downs and his wife Judi Tutor Downs of Statesboro, Ga.; Suzanne Downs Grimes and her husband Christopher Eugene Grimes of Fuquay-Varina; and William Murray Downs and his wife Kimberly Harwood Downs of Lilburn, Ga.
She also leaves seven great-grandchildren: Brandon Murray Davis and Daniel E. Grimes, both of Fuquay-Varina, Jonathan Taylor Down, Andrew Carson Downs, and Kathryn Blair Downs of Statesboro, Ga., and Rachel Elizabeth Downs and Bradley Craig Downs of Lilburn, Ga.
The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 15, at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. John Fowler.
The family received friends Monday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment followed in Forest Hills Cemetery in Morganton. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 309 Church Street, N.W., Lenoir, N.C. 28645, or the Fuquay-Varina United Methodist Church, 100 South Judd Parkway, S.E., Fuquay-Varina, N.C. 27526. Greer-McElveen Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of arrangements.
Christopher Worth Martin
Chris Martin, 16, died Saturday morning, Nov. 15, in an automobile accident.
He was a junior at Fuquay-Varina High School and a member of the varsity soccer team. He was a loving son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and a friend to many. He was an excellent athlete, who loved all sports and had a zest for life.
Visitation was held from 6 to 9 p.m., on Monday, Nov. 17, 2003 at the Fuquay-Varina United Methodist Church, 100 S. Judd Parkway, SE, Fuquay-Varina. Anyone who has a memento, picture, or note they would like to leave at the altar in his memory may do so.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003 at 2 p.m. at the Fuquay-Varina United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ray Broadwell officiating.
He leaves to cherish his memory his mother and step-father, Terri and Marty Miller of Holly Springs; his father and step-mother, Jay and Michelle Martin of Fuquay-Varina; sister, Tamara Leigh Martin of Fuquay-Varina; step-sisters, Ashley Miller and Angela Seawell both of Fuquay-Varina; step-brothers, Justin Miller and Joshua Hensley both of Fuquay-Varina; maternal grandparents, Cliff and Lou Coble of Burlington; uncles, Patrick Coble of Greensboro, Timothy Coble and wife, Nancy of Waynesboro, Virginia; cousins, Ben, Josh, and Leigh Anne Coble.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Chris Martin Soccer Scholarship Fund, in care of Donna Willis, First Federal Bank, 603 N. Judd Parkway, NE, Fuquay-Varina, NC 27526.

James H. Bowling
James Herbert Bowling, 83, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003. Graveside service was at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov.16, 2003 at Baptist Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Bowling was preceded in death by his wife, Lena Revels Bowling.
Surviving, daughter, Norma Jean Tutor and husband, Gene Tutor of Fuquay-Varina; brothers, Rossar Bowling of Fuquay-Varina and Jessie Bowling of Florida; granddaughters, Gina Hodges and husband, Gene, Lori Dewar and husband, Jeff, Maria Wheat all of Fuquay-Varina; great grandchildren, Heather and Holly Matthews, Haley Hodges, Jeffrey, Joshua and Lindsay Dewar, Madison Wheat.
The family received friends immediately following the graveside service.

Calvin Washington
Calvin Washington, 79, died Friday, November 7th at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh after an extended illness.
He was born in Stem, NC, the son of Robert and Malah Washington and spent most of his early years in Harnett County. He graduated from Angier High School in 1943.
Mr. Washington served with distinction in the US Army, 28th Infantry, during World War II. He saw action in Germany and France including the Battle of the Bulge as part of General Patton’s forces.
He lived his entire adult life in Fuquay-Varina, NC. Most recently, he was a resident of Windsor Point Retirement Village. He retired from a long career with Kendall Healthcare Products at a facility known locally as the “diaper plant.” In addition, he was also a proud tobacco farmer.
Mr. Washington was preceded in death by his loving wife of 48 years, Ruby Olivia Hardee of Lillington, NC. Both were members of Wake Chapel Christian Church in Fuquay-Varina for more than 40 years.
He is survived by two sons, Jerry Bryant Washington and Randall Lynn Washington, both of Raleigh; grandchildren Kristi Leah Washington of Danville, VA; Robert Lynn Washington of Boise, ID; Kevin Lee Washington and John Bryant Washington, both of Cary, NC. Also survived by his sister Margaret Washington Lancaster and two daughters-in-laws Sheila Jordan and Lynn Setzer all of Raleigh.
Visitation was held Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, 401 N. Ennis Street, Fuquay-Varina. For details, call 552-4171.
Funeral services were be held Monday, Nov. 10, 2003 at 11 a.m. at Wake Chapel Christian Church in Fuquay-Varina. Interment will be at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Fuquay-Varina.

Ethel B. Watkins
Ethel Baker Watkins, 83, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003. Funeral service 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 14, 2003 at Thomas Funeral Home Chapel. A private family interment will be held later.
Mrs. Watkins was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She attended Raleigh Public Schools and graduated from Mary Elizabeth School of Nursing in Raleigh. On Oct. 6, 1939 she married Charlie Rogers Watkins. She worked in Raleigh area hospitals until her retirement in 1975. She was a longtime member of Westminster Presbyterian Church of Raleigh where she was a member of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class before moving to Fuquay-Varina in 1985. She was a current member of the Fuquay-Varina United Methodist Church and enjoyed many hobbies including crocheting afghans for family and friends and reading.
Surviving, husband of 64 years, Charlie Rogers Watkins; daughters, Bettie W. Martin of Fuquay-Varina, Patricia W. Fisher and husband, James E. Fisher of Carmel, Indiana; grandchildren, Amanda DeCello and husband, Todd DeCello of Noblesville, Indiana, Troy Martin and wife, Lori G. Martin of Spencer, NC.
The family will receive friends on Friday immediately following the service at the funeral home.
