Virginia Cozart McLeod
Mar 21, 2015
Martha Virginia Cozart McLeod, 87, passed away peacefully Saturday night, March 21, 2015 at UNC Rex Hospital. Just as the earth comes to life with the arrival of Spring, a new and glorious life has begun for Virginia.
Born March 30, 1927 in Fuquay Springs, she was the daughter of Dr. Wiley Simeon Cozart and Pauline Holt Cozart.
Virginia was baptized as an infant at Fuquay Springs Methodist Episcopal Church (now Fuquay-Varina United Methodist Church). At the age of 12, she confirmed her faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and joined the church. Throughout her life she was a beloved and faithful member of the congregation, and served long tenures on the Parsonage and Memorials committees. Over the past several years, she participated in the Monday and Wednesday morning Devotional and Walking Group.
Affectionately called "Jenny" by friends and family, she graduated from Fuquay Springs High School, attended Peace College for one year and graduated with a Teaching Degree from High Point College in 1948. She taught primary school in Durham, Lillington and Albemarle.
Early one evening, she feigned interest in buying life insurance from a handsome young salesman, so he might make another call to the teacherage where she resided in Lillington. He did return, a flame was kindled, love struck, and Virginia and Bernard were married August 9, 1950.
In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her daughter, Martha Cozart McLeod, who died at the age of nine in 1962; her brother, Dr. Wiley Holt Cozart; and sisters, Rebecca Cozart Smith and Rachel Cozart Barwick.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Bernard Franklin McLeod Jr. of the home; son, Bernard Franklin McLeod III and wife Elaine of Wake Forest; son, Wiley Stewart McLeod and wife Tammy of Clayton; sister, Patsy Cozart Patrick and husband Dr. Simmons Patrick of Kinston; five granddaughters, Martha Heath and husband Tyler, Hannah McLeod, Madison McLeod, Hilary McLeod and Caroline McLeod; and 15 nephews and nieces.
A devoted wife and mother, she dedicated her life to taking care of her husband and children. Her heart ached throughout the years due to the loss of her first child and only daughter. She directed her attention on her sons and doted on both. She loved her daughters-in-law like her own, and found great joy and delight in her granddaughters, cherishing every moment with them.
She did not ask for much. Instead she bountifully gave of herself. When her daughter-in-law, Elaine, was pregnant, she prayed continuously for a girl. God answered her prayers when another Martha was born. God's blessings on her continued with four more granddaughters, the last two, a set of twins.
On every family member's birthday, she never failed to say, "I'm glad you were born." And when it was time to say goodbye to her sons after a telephone conversation or a visit, she would always remind them to "Give my love to all your girls and keep some for yourself."
The family will receive friends and relatives from 1 to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24 at Fuquay-Varina United Methodist Church. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. Burial will be at Wake Chapel Memorial Gardens. Revs. Gene and Valerie Tyson will officiate.
The McLeod family would like to express heartfelt thanks to RNs Katherine, Calvin and Laurel, and the staff of 7 East at Rex Hospital for their wonderful and compassionate care for Virginia.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Fuquay-Varina United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 100 Judd Parkway, Fuquay-Varina, NC 27526.
