Empie Lee Bunce Jr.
Empie Lee Bunce Jr., 78, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003. The funeral was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery with military honors. He is survived by daughters, Donna R. Bunce of Fuquay-Varina and Denise M. Marsh and husband Peter C. Marsh of Anchorage, Alaska; son, E. Lee Bunce III and wife, Lavinia Bunce of Raleigh; grandchildren, Victoria M. Marsh and Jordan Lee Bunce; sister, Marjorie Edwards of Fayetteville; and brothers, James Frederick Bunce of Beaufort and Henry Louis Bunce of Clayton. The family will receive friends on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home. Julia Ward Wilson
Julia Ward Wilson, 81, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003. The funeral was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at Sugg Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Cumberland Union Cemetery. She is survived by daughter, Mary Sykes of Durham; sons, James Wilson and wife Pam of Willow Springs, Larry Wilson of Florida, and Rick Wilson and wife Marilyn of Raleigh; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sisters, Mary Herring, Lois Jordan and Ruth Alphin, all of Turkey; and brothers, Jerry Ward of Turkey and Frank Ward of Warsaw. Arrangements were handled Sugg Funeral Home of Fuquay-Varina.
Lawrence P. Wells
Lawrence Prentiss Wells, 92, passed into his heavenly home on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003. A service of celebration of the homegoing of Lawrence Wells was held at the Fuquay-Varina Baptist Church on Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, at 11 a.m. Burial followed at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Mr. Wells was born in Mecklenburg County, Va., on Oct. 27, 1910, as the youngest child of George Robert Wells Sr. and Karen Jeffress Wells. He moved with his family to Harnett Bounty in 1911. Mr. Wells attended LaFayette School and Campbell College, playing basketball and baseball at both schools. In addition to his farming interests, he owned and operated Wells Service States and, also, Wells Pontiac Company in Fuquay Springs for several years. After his retirement in 1954, he worked part time as an adjuster for the Rain and Hall Insurance Bureau. For several winters, he worked with Dozier Pontiac-Cadillac in Bradenton, Fla. Mr. Wells was a longtime, faithful member of the Fuquay-Varina Baptist Church. He was a Life Deacon and served as a teacher for the Young Men’s and Master Workmen Sunday school classes. He also enjoyed singing with a Men’s Quartet. Mr. Wells was a member of the Fuquay Masonic Lodge #256 having achieved the 32nd degree. He was also a 50-plus year member of this Scottish Rite of North Carolina. Mr. Wells was married to his “Little Woman,” Vada Sentor Wells, for 70 years. She predeceased him on Dec. 2, 2002. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Wells was predeceased by siblings, Annie W. Andrews, Jennings Wells, Rob Wells and Rita W. Whittenton. He is survived by his daughter, Betty Wells Abernathy Tilley and her husband, Jimmy of Fuquay-Varina; his grandchildren, Debbie Abernathy Jones and her husband, Johnny of Fuquay-Varina and Sarah Abernathy Ogburn and her husband, Tandy of Willow Spring; great-grandchildren, Wendy Elizabeth Jones and Angela Jones Moss and her husband Steven, both of Fuquay-Varina, and Mandy Elizabeth, Simeon Lawrence and Amy Michelle Ogburn, all of Willow Spring; one brother, Byrde C. Wells of Henderson; a brother-in-law, Pearce Senter and his wife Margaret of Raleigh; and a sister-in-law, Lois Sentor Stephens of Phafllown. Mr. Wells is also survived by step-grandchildren, Kim Alley Rogers and her husband, Billy, Cindy Tilley Alexander and her husband Bill, Jim Tilley and Jennifer White; and step-great-grandchildren, Billie Jean, Leigh Ann and Rebecca Rogers, Ashlee Ricks, Andrew Alexander and Jessica Tilley. Visitation for the Wells family was held at Thomas Funeral Home in Fuquay-Varina from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28. The family will gather other times at the home of Betty and Jimmy Tilley, 308 Kite Dr., Fuquay-Varina. Doris E. Goodwin
Doris Elizabeth Goodwin, 74, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003. The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, at Thomas Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Goodwin was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Ruth Wagstaff; a daughter, Elaine Grantham; sister, Vernell Sherron; and a brother, Zack Wagstaff. She is survived by her husband, Alfred B. Goodwin; daughters, Brenda G. Lett of Holly Springs and Rhonda G. Cotton of Willow Spring; son, Tim Goodwin of Lillington; faithful family friend, Hettie Adams of Fuquay Varina; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister, Faye Wobb of Tallahassee, Fla.; and brother, Roger Wagstaff of California. The family will receive friends on Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home and other times at the home, 266 Bradley Rd., Fuquay-Varina.
Malcolm Grisinger
Gordan “Malcolm” Grisinger, 62, of 8105 Springwind Dr., died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003. The funeral was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, at Rawls Baptist Church in Fuquay-Varina. Burial was in the church cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Janet Grisinger; son, Gordon Grisinger III and wife Stacy of Boston, Mass.; daughters, Kari Ramsey and husband Jason and Stephanie Grisinger, all of Atlanta, Ga.; stepson, Steve Carroll and wife GG of Bluefield of W.Va.; stepdaughters, Crystal Belcher and husband Jimmy of Princeton, W.Va., and Robin Ball and husband Joey of Benson; four grandsons, Jason, Chris, Soloman and T.J.; sister, Carol Eakes and husband Gordon of Apex; four brothers-in-law; and a special sister-in-law, Doris. The family received friends from 2 to 3 p.m., one hour prior to the funeral service at Rawls Baptist Church, and other times at the home. William F. Bailey
Mr. William F. “Bill” Bailey, 45, of Kipling, died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003, in UNC Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill. Bill was a loving and devoted husband, father, son, brother and friend. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish, hunt and play golf. He shared these passions with his sons, Nick and Brooks. Mr. Bailey was preceded in death by his father, Maurice Fletcher Bailey. The funeral was held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Chalybeate Springs Baptist Church, Fuquay-Varina, with the Rev. John Gupton and the Rev. Lee Covle officiating. Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at O’Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home. Mr. Bailey is survived by his wife, Kathy Carvalho Bailey; two sons, Nick and Brooks Bailey of the home; mother, Earlene Tart Bailey of Dunn; three sisters, Cynthia Adams and her husband Wayne of Greenville, Sylvia Hink and her husband Howard of Cary, and Pam Bailey of Dunn; two nephews, Jason Adams and Jonathan Adams; and three nieces, Beth Adams, Ashley Hink and Sarah Hink. Beatrice Johnson Connor
Mrs. Beatrice Johnson Connor, 97, of Fuquay-Varina died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, in Wake Medical Center in Raleigh. Mrs. Connor was the daughter of the late Evander and Margaret Smith Johnson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Connor. The funeral was held at 11 a.m. Monday at Chalybeate Springs Baptist Church in Fuquay-Varina with the Rev. John Gupton, the Rev. Woody Neal, and the Rev. Lee Ray Green. The burial was in the church cemetery. Visitation was held from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church and other times at the home of Gordon Conner. Mrs. Conner is survived by her son, Gordon R. Connor and his wife Margie of Fuquay-Varina; a brother, Gilmore Johnson of Garner; two sisters, Excelle Sloan of Lillington and Mary Spence of Fuquay-Varina; five grandchildren, Jennie Price, Rick Connor, Cathy Ellis, Lee Ann Bennett, and Tony Connor; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
