Eleanor C. Adcock

Fuquay-Varina - Eleanor Clark Adcock, 78, died peacefully at Rex Hospital Wednesday evening, October 9, 2013. She was born in Varina, N.C. to Vurtle Johnson Clark and Ennis Hocutt Clark. She was a graduate of Fuquay Springs High School and Meredith College, Raleigh, NC.
She was predeceased by her husband, R. Maurice Adcock; her brother, William L. Clark and her parents.
She is survived by her son and daughter in law, Jeff and Carol Adcock and her grandchildren, Hunter and Sydney Adcock. She is also survived by her sister, Anne Clark Dahle, nieces and nephews, Carl Dahle (Janet Link), Allison Dahle (Lou Pounder), Lisa Clark Ashworth, Lloyd Clark (Catherine), and great nieces and nephews Caroline and Kristin Ashworth, Braxton, Chrismon and Hudson Clark.
While studying at Meredith she majored in elementary education, but music played as large a part in her life as her teaching. She then went on to teach second and fourth grades in Cary before her marriage and in Fuquay-Varina after her marriage and until the birth of their son. She returned to her career as a teacher after Jeff was in school and remained there until her retirement.
Family, church, music and children were the love of her life. She began playing piano for the Fuquay Springs Baptist Church when she was just a teenager. She continued to play for Fuquay-Varina Baptist Church until such time that she was no longer able to play. She then turned to her favorite task, playing with her beloved grandchildren by reading, educating and teaching them music.
Eleanor had many talents and took great pride in whatever she did; music for countless weddings and funerals, teaching, and luncheons with the Friendly Dozen.

A celebration of Eleanor’s life will be held at Wake Chapel Christian Church on Sunday, October 13 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Wake Chapel Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 12 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home and other times at the home of Jeff and Carol Adcock, 5201 Highlandcroft Place, Fuquay-Varina.
Frank M. Steinbach

Fuquay-Varina – Frank M. Steinbach, age 87, passed away peacefully at his home in Fuquay-Varina, NC on Thursday, October 3, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 7, 2013 at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 1005 Wilbon Road, Fuquay-Varina, NC.
Frank was guided in life by his devout faith in the Lord and was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Fuquay-Varina from its inception.
He was unconditionally devoted to his family and they remained his first priority throughout his life.
Frank was born in The Bronx, NY on May 14, 1926 to Frank and Mary (Liston) Steinbach.
Frank proudly served in the United States Army during WWII in Germany, during which time he was a member of the 5th Infantry Division in the 3rd Army under General George Patton. He fought in three major engagements including the Ardennes Counter Offensive "Battle of the Bulge", earning three battle stars and the Infantry Mans Combat Award.
Prior to the war, he began a promising baseball career which he continued after his discharge from the Army. He played on the New York Yankees Farm Team from 1945 through 1950 until an unfortunate injury ended his career. For a short time during 1947 he played on the Dunn-Erwin Club in Harnett County, NC.
Not willing to give up his passion for baseball, he remained active in Little League, coaching teams including those of his sons and grandsons.
He worked for many years delivering Wonder Bread to the neighborhood grocery stores and deli's in The Bronx. He became well known and loved as The Wonder Bread man. Upon his retirement, he relocated to North Carolina where he lived a full and active life for many years. He was a long time member of the Lochmere Golf Club where he spent every afternoon on the course. He played in and won several tournaments with his sons and grandsons.
In addition to his parents and one sister, Frank was preceded in death by his wife, Frances (Curran) of Highland Mills, NY.
Left to forever cherish his uplifting memory are, his daughter, Barbara Cottrell and husband, James of Fuquay-Varina, NC; his sons, Frank Steinbach and wife, Mary of Clayton, NC and John Steinbach and wife, Marla of Willow Spring, NC; grandchildren, Michael Carson and wife, Courtney of Glen Allen, VA, Tracy Topolski and husband, Alex of Sarasota, FL, Christopher Carson and wife, Katie of Fuquay-Varina, NC, Michelle and Jennifer Steinbach, both of Willow Spring, NC and Cody Steinbach of Clayton, NC; great-grandson and namesake, Frank Carson of Glen Allen, VA; and brother, Donald Steinbach of Englishtown, NJ. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive visitors on Sunday, October 6, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, 401 N Ennis Street, Fuquay-Varina.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Hospice of Wake County for their gentle care, guidance and support during his final days.

Bobby Ray Pollard

Fuquay-Varina – Bobby Ray Pollard, 77, died Tuesday, October 1, 2013. A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 5, 2013 at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Fuquay-Varina.
Bobby is survived by his sister, Hazel Christian of Fuquay-Varina; several nieces and nephews; and friends.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice in memory of Bobby Ray Pollard.
Jack Ryan Rhodes

Raleigh – Jack Ryan Rhodes, 72, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Sunday, September 29, 2013 after a long illness. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at Mid-Way Baptist Church, 6910 Fayetteville Road, Raleigh, NC. Entombment will follow the service at Montlawn Memorial Park.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur Harris and Annie Young Rhodes.
Jack was a co-owner of Carolina Typewriter Company in Raleigh from 1974 to 1994, and owner of Stump Grinding Service from 1994 to current. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother, who loved his family dearly. He was a hard worker who loved working outside in his yard or with his stump grinding business, or enjoying his three miniature horses.
He was dedicated to his family, and also to the Lord. He accepted the gift of salvation in 1971 and served faithfully for over 40 years at Mid-Way Baptist Church in the usher ministry.
Jack is survived by his wife of 44 years, Jean Moss Rhodes; two sons, Jack Rhodes, Jr. (Jennifer) of Raleigh, and Robby Rhodes (Paula) of Raleigh; daughter, Sherry McClung (Darren) of Fuquay-Varina; brother, W.H. Rhodes (Barbara) of Fuquay-Varina; three sisters, Faye Lipscomb (David) of Willow Spring, Linda Stewart (George) of Fuquay-Varina, and Carol Spence (Johnny) of Fuquay-Varina; two granddaughters, Ashlynn and Averee.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at Mid-Way Baptist Church.

Fuquay-Varina - Geneva Poteat Roberts, 84, died Thursday, September 26, 2013 surrounded by her loving family. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 28 at 1:00 p.m. at the Fuquay-Varina United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Wake Chapel Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Roberts was preceded in death by her husband Henry Thomas Roberts, the love of her life for 63 years, her parents, Fred and Louise Poteat, a sister, Marie Oakley and a brother, Earl Poteat.
She is survived by her daughter, Vicki Bennett and husband John Carlton Bennett, III of Fuquay-Varina; a son, Gregory T. Roberts and wife Dawn Roberts of Holly Springs; granddaughters, Jessica and Ashley Roberts of Holly Springs; sister, Nancy Compton and husband, Leon of Danville, VA; uncle, Houston Poteat and wife, Ruby of Reidsville.
Geneva was a loving and devoted wife, mother and memommie. She told anyone who would listen how proud she was of her family. Anyone who knew Geneva appreciated her wit and outspoken nature. To know her is to love her.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Fuquay-Varina United Methodist Church.

Captain Ben Ward Blee

Fuquay-Varina - Captain Ben Ward Blee, U.S. Navy (Ret.), age 90, died on March 3rd at Windsor Point Retirement Community in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina after a brief illness.
Born and raised in Santa Ana, California, Blee attended Santa Ana High School and Occidental College before graduating from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. A career naval officer, he devoted 27 years to the Navy before retiring from that service in 1967. He spent most of World War II in the Pacific, first in the cruiser Pensacola, later in the battleship, North Carolina, seeing action in most of the campaigns and major naval engagements of the war against Japan.
Following World War II, his naval career alternated between line billets at sea and staff intelligence positions ashore. He commanded three ships, served as an intelligence officer on the staffs of all three U.S. Navy area commanders-in-chief, was Aide and Executive Assistant to NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic, and was U.S. Naval Attaché in Singapore and Malaysia. For his final Navy tour (1965-67), during the Vietnam War, he was Fleet Intelligence Officer, U.S. Pacific Fleet.
Upon retirement from the Navy in 1967, Captain Blee and his family settled in Jacksonville, NC, where he undertook a second career in life insurance. His experience with the USS North Carolina during World War II led to his appointment and ten years of service as chairman of the state commission charged with overseeing the operation and maintenance of the famous ship as a state war memorial and tourist attraction, berthed since 1962 in Wilmington, NC. In that capacity Blee was responsible for production of the television documentary, Showboat – A Battleship at War, and he later authored the book Battleship North Carolina, the definitive history of that ship, with a revised and expanded second edition published in 2006.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Martha Woodhouse Blee, who died in 1970, by his second wife, Elizabeth Woodhouse Rawls Blee, who died in February, 2006, and by his daughter Martha Blee Holland of Southport, NC, who died in July 2010. He is survived by a daughter, Betsy Blee of Southport, NC; daughter Jane Blee Creel and her husband Thomas M. Creel of Fuquay-Varina, NC; son-in-law George Thomas Holland of Southport, NC; grandsons John and Ben Creel; granddaughters Amanda Jane Holland and Elizabeth Martha (Emmy) Holland; and sister Holly Jane Blee Ward.
A graveside service will be held in the cemetery of the Eastern Shore Chapel, Laskin Road, Virginia Beach, VA, at 2 pm on Sunday, March 6th. The Rev. Rob Kunes, Rector of Galilee Episcopal Church, Virginia Beach, will officiate. Funeral arrangements by H. D. Oliver.
