RALEIGH -- John W. Taylor, Jr., 73, of 4304 Batts Road, died Saturday, January 24, 1998 after an extended illness. He was born in Nash County, and was the son of the late Alice Jane Lyles Taylor and Johnie William Taylor. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church and was retired from the NC Department of Correction. He was a veteran of the US Marines serving in World War II and was married to Katherine Cratch Taylor who preceded him in death.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 1 o'clock, Tuesday afternoon, January 27, 1998 at Montlawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Charles Monroe and the Rev. Larry Ogle officiating.
Mr. Taylor is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Ellen Jane and John R. "Ricky" Knox of Raleigh; son and daughter-in-law, Johnny and Vickie Taylor of Wake Forest; grandchildren, Mandy Knox of Raleigh, Sarah Elizabeth Taylor and Joseph Taylor of Wake Forest.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Friendship Baptist Church Men for Mission, 5510 Falls of Neuse Road, Raleigh, NC 27609.
The family will receive friends at Bright Funeral Home in Wake Forest, from 7-8:30 Monday evening and at the home of Ellen and Ricky Knox, 2624 Constitution Drive, Raleigh, at other times.
EVELYN THOMAS WINDLEY
RALEIGH -- Evelyn Thomas Windley of 1505 Dudley Circle, died Wednesday, January 21, 1998 at home. She was a dedicated and loving wife and grandmother. Evelyn was born in Richmond County and the daughter of the late Pickett Thomas and Connie Reddick Thomas. Evelyn completed high school at Leak Street High School, Rockingham. She received her B.S. degree from Fayetteville State University, Fayetteville. An excellent teacher and educator, for over 30 years, she has served as principal and teacher in Mesena Georgia, and taught at Cameron Morrison School, Hoffman, Samuel Leonard School, McCain, NC, Rohanen Primary School, Rockingham, NC, Fred Kitt Nursery School and Tuttle Community Center, both in Raleigh. She was a member of the Missionary Board and Booster Club at Rush Metropolitan AMEZ Church and a member of Alpha Chi Sorority.
Surviving are her husband, William R. Windley Sr. of the home; son, William R. Windley, Jr. of Fayetteville; daughter, Evelyn Windley Kaufman of Louisville, KY; grandchildren, William R. Windley III of Greensboro, Adaryll B. Windley of the home, Tomas' Windley, Chris Windley, Evelyn Nicole Windley, Ashley Windley, Danielle Windley, Meagan Windley, Nicholas Windley and Alexis Windley, all of Fayetteville.
The family request those wishing to honor Evelyn's life should do so through contributions to Hospice of Wake County in memory of Evelyn T. Windley, 4513 Creedmoor Road, Raleigh, NC 27612.
Visitation/viewing will be 12:30 p.m. Monday, January 26th at Rush Metropolitan AMEZ Church, 558 East Cabarrus Street. Funeral service will follow at 1:30 p.m. Burial will follow at Carolina Biblical Gardens, Creech Road, Raleigh, NC.
LOLA F. ALLGOOD
DURHAM -- Mrs. Lola Flynn Allgood, 94, resident of Durham, died Sunday morning in Northwood Manor Convalescent Center following declining health. She was born in Yadkin County and had been a resident of Winston-Salem, until she moved to Durham, in 1942. She was the wife of the late Thomas Isaac Allgood.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Betty A. Tillman and Mrs. Vernell A. Pittman both of Durham; three sisters, Mrs. Mamie Brown and Mrs. Gladys Lakey both of Winston Salem and Mrs. Pauline Ashby of Elizabeth City; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Woodlawn Memorial Park by Rev. Carl Johnson. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home and at other times will be at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Vernell A. Pittman of 2109 Pleasant Green Rd. in Durham.
THELMA M. ALSTON
APEX -- Thelma Mae Alston, 71, one of eight children of the late Walter and Ethel Boone was born on May 23, 1926 in Chatham County, North Carolina.
She entered into eternal rest on Saturday, January 24, 1998. At a early age, she joined Ebenezer A.M.E. Zion Church, where she served faithfully for many years. She later joined her husband at Mitchell's Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church.
She has served the A.M.E. Zion local church as a Deaconess, Preacher's Steward, choir member, class leader, secretary, chairperson, kitchen committee, and served/supported the church in all capacities of function.
She also held a conference position as Missionary Advocate. She was an Eastern Star member for many years, serving as Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star and Worthy Matron of the Administrative Council and other positions.
She was educated in the Wake County School System. She worked and retired from the VA Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina.
Thelma Alston was preceded in death by four brothers.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her faithful husband, Mr. Joe Alston Jr. of Apex; three daughters and one son, Gloria Alston Davis of Apex, Alice Alston Noell of Apex, Carolyn Alston McKinnie of Durham, and Kenneth Alston of the home; sister, Carrie Farrow of Apex; three brothers, A.J. Boone of Apex, Robert Boone of Apex and Thomas Boone of Baltimore, Md. She leaves behind five grandchildren; one great-grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral service will be Tuesday, January 27, 1998 at 1 p.m., Mitchell's Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, Pittsboro, with Rev. Kenneth Brooks officiating.
Visitation will be one hour before the service 12-1 p.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Hospice of Chatham County, 200 East Street, Pittsboro, N.C. 27312.
MARY E. BERRY
RALEIGH -- Mary Elizabeth Looram Berry died peacefully at home in Raleigh, on Sunday, January 25. Born on April 4, 1921, she was the daughter of Dr. James Francis Xavier Looram and Mary Elizabeth Harden Looram of Elmhurst, Long Island, New York.
She graduated from the Academy of Saint Joseph in Brentwood, N.Y. and Manhattanville College in New York City. On January 9, 1943, she married James Fant Berry in Saint Patrick's Cathedral. James Berry died this previous September.
A woman of great soul and powerful talent, Mary Looram Berry served many communities with peerless generosity. A long-time associate of Catholic Social Services and a founding member of Common Cause, North Carolina, she was also a pillar of numerous parish, civic, and hospital organizations. She served, too, as an election correspondent for N.B.C. News.
Settling in Raleigh in 1968, Mary Looram Berry was ardently committed to the North Carolina Museum of Art, where she served as a docent, the president of the docents' society, and a masterful (and long irreplaceable) head of the travel committee. She was particularly devoted to tours of the museum collection for visually impaired visitors.
An accomplished harpist who performed at Carnegie Hall in N.Y., Mary Looram Berry was a member of the American Harp Society, a member and officer of the Raleigh Fine Arts Society, a patron of the Metropolitan Opera and the Roger Tory Peterson Institute.
Blessed with beauty and a surging joy in life, she loved totally each member of her family and each friend. Nothing she turned her hand to was left imperfect. No party was complete without her. Her own parties, and her home, set the standard of warmth and grace.
Mary Elizabeth Looram Berry leaves four children: Mary Elizabeth Berry of Berkeley, CA; Annie Raphael Berry of Chapel Hill; James Michael Berry of Jamestown, NY; and Gabriel Marie Berry of New York City. She also leaves two brothers, Eugene Harden Looram of Palm Coast, Florida, and James Francis Xavier Looram of Pacific Grove, CA; and seven grandchildren, Acasia, Laura, Emily, Seth, Anne, Christopher, and Kate.
A Requiem Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 28 at 2:00 p.m. at The Catholic Community of Saint Francis of Assisi in Raleigh, 11401 Leesville Road, Raleigh.
Visitation with the family at the church will precede Mass at 1:00 p.m.
Contributions in the name of Mary Looram Berry can be made to the North Carolina Museum of Art Foundation, 2110 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh 27607.
MIRIAM M. BRAXTON
GODWIN -- Mrs. Miriam McLean Braxton, 87, of Hwy 301 North, died Saturday, January 24, 1998 at Highsmith-Rainey Memorial Hospital. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 27, 1998 at Jernigan-Warren Chapel with the Rev. Ray Lammers. Burial will follow at Old Bluff Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Braxton was an active member of Godwin Presbyterian Church, Godwin, N.C.
Survivors: a daughter, Mary Emily Royal of Goodwin; a son, Myers Griffin "Sonny" Braxton of Raleigh; a sister, Johnnie McLean Upton of Raleigh; a brother, Dr. James W. McLean of Fayetteville; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 7-9 p.m. Monday at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Howell Centers, 100 Howell St., La Grange, N.C. 28551.
ARNETTA "LOIS" CATES
DURHAM -- Mrs. Arnetta "Lois" Haskins Cates, daughter of Clenton Haskins and the late Collins Haskins, Sr. was born in Durham County, May 1, 1951 and departed this life January 21, 1998. She was educated in the Durham County Schools and attended Durham Technical Institute. She was employed with Northern Telecom for several years. At an early age she joined Pilot Baptist Church in Pilot, NC. Later she attended Union Baptist Church where she served on the Usher Board.
Funeral service 2 p.m. Monday at Union Baptist Church with Rev. Kenneth Hammond officiating. Burial will follow in Glennview Memorial Park.
She is survived by her husband, George Cates, Sr.; daughter, Tammy C. Carrington of Durham; thee sons, George, Jr. Kenneth and Jeff Cates all of Durham; mother,Clenton Haskins of Zebulon, NC; six brothers, Norfolk Haskins of Newark, NJ; Collins, Jr., Leslie, Gerald, Frank and Regional Haskins all of Durham; sister, Ruth Blackett of Maplewood, NJ; six grandchildren; three aunts; several nieces and nephews and other loving relatives and friends.
A visitation is today at Ellis D. Jones & Sons Funeral Chapel from 7-8 p.m.
