DURHAM -- Mrs. Parnell Huggins Moore, 76, daughter of the late Jesse and Martha Debose Huggins, began her life on June 13, 1921, in Darlington, SC. She went home to rest on January 23, 1998 in Durham Regional Hospital. Mrs. Moore was a longtime employee of Gold Kist Poultry and retired from Johnson-Forrester Laundry. She joined Jesus House of Prayer Holiness Church and remained a faithful member until 1987, when she moved her membership to the Highway House of Prayer. She was a devoted member of the Ministerial staff, Missionary Board, Mother Board and the Highway Gospel Singers. She was married to the late Walter "Monroe" Moore.
Funeral service will be Tuesday, 1 p.m. at Highway House of Prayer with Prophet George Trice officiating. Burial will follow in Markham Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends an hour before the service at the church.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jesse H. Covington and Arthur of Durham; sister, Vestie H. Hicks of Durham; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; an a host of nieces and nephews.

ALICE J. OWENS
SOUTHERN PINES -- Alice Jacobs Owens, 88, died January 25, 1998, at First Health Moore Regional Hospital.
Funeral is 2 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Henry C. Duncan officiating.
Burial is in Pinelawn Memorial Park.
Survivors include her husband, Erskine A. Owens; a son, E. Dixon Owens, Columbia, S.C.; and a grandson, Ira E. Owens, Columbia, S.C.
ALICE H. PURDIE
RALEIGH -- Alice Hart Turner Purdie, 87, of Springmoor Retirement Center, Raleigh, died 01/24/98 at 1:45 p.m.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, First Presbyterian Church in Dunn, NC, with Dr. David Bailey officiating. A private family burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends after the memorial service at the church.
Mrs. Purdie was born June 14, 1910 in Wake County, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hart Turner of Raleigh. She graduated from Hugh Morrison High School, Class of 1927, and attended Mary Baldwin College. For many years, she worked as a secretary for the IRS and the NC Legislature. Mrs. Purdie is the former president and owner of T.H. Turner Farms, Inc., south of Garner.
She married Edward Purdie, Jr., of Dunn, NC, and had four children: Edward Purdie, III, Susan Purdie Allen, Alice Hart Purdie, and Thomas James Purdie. She is survived by her daughters, Susan Purdie Allen of Raleigh and Alice Hart Purdie of Charlotte, and her son-in-law, Lark M. Allen of Raleigh.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be sent to First Presbyterian Church, 901 N. Park Ave., Dunn, N.C. 28334; Turner Memorial Baptist Church, NC 50 Highway, Garner, N.C. 27529, or the American Cancer Society of Wake County, 620 W. Morgan St., Raleigh, N.C. 27603.
Cromartie, Miller, and Lee Funeral Home of Dunn, NC, is serving the family of Mrs. Purdie.
ELVIE J. RIGSBEE
DURHAM -- Miss Elvie Joyce Rigsbee, 60, resident of 3919 Linden Rd., died Friday evening in Durham Regional Hospital following declining health. She had been a life long resident of Durham and was the daughter of the late Lora Riley Rigsbee.She was predeceased by a brother, Robert Lee Rigsbee, Jr.She was a natural care giver always giving of herself unselfishly to others. She was employed with Hechts for 38 years. She was a member of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church.
Surviving: are her father, Robert Lee Rigsbee, Sr. of Durham; three sister, Mrs. Norma J. Hannah and husband, Jimmy, and Mrs. Nancy Williams and husband, Fred, both of Cary and Sandra, of Durham; her friend, Iris R. Thomason of Durham; and four nieces and three nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. in Mt. Hermon Baptist Church Cemetery by Rev. Joe Bostic. Pallbearers will be David Davis, Ricky Bailey, Max Price, John Bullock, Rufus Bullock and Jerry Sanes.
Flowers are acceptable or those wishing may make memorial contributions to Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, 4511 Old NC 10, Durham, N.C. 27705.
Arrangements are by Clements Funeral Home of Durham.
JAY KEITT SAWYER
RALEIGH -- Jay Keitt Sawyer, 54,of Raleigh, died suddenly Saturday in Clemson, S.C. he was product manager with IBM.
Jay was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved the outdoors. He was a member of White Plains United Methodist Church in Cary, a Bible Study Fellowship Leader, a loving husband, and father and a friend to many.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 am. at White Plains United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Epworth United Methodist Church Cemetery in Vanceboro, N.C. at 4 p.m.
Surviving: his wife, Jackie Dixon Sawyer; two sons, Lee Bland and wife, Kayla Koppelman Sawyer of Fuquay-Varina, Dean Alan Sawyer of Clemson, S.C.; one daughter, Amy Sawyer Williams and husband, Mark Cameron Williams of Apex; his father, Keitt Sawyer and mother, Doris Bland Sawyer of Vanceboro; one brother, George Bland Sawyer of New Bern.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7-9 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, that memorials be made to the American Heart Association, 3901 Computer Dr., Suite 110, Raleigh, N.C. 27609.
CHARLIE E. SMITH
ROXOBEL -- Mr. Charlie Everett Smith, 84, of Tyler School Road, died Saturday, January 24, 1998 at his home.
Mr. Smith was a USAF Master Sgt., retired having served with the United States Air Force for 21 years.
He was the son of the late Charlie Smith and Mollie Smith.
Survivors include his wife, Laura Bracy Smith; three daughters, Sandra Buchite of Kitty Hawk, Laura Jo Traylor of Eure and Susan Godwin of Newton Grove; two sons, Charlie E. Smith, Jr. of Hampton, Va., and Robert Douglas Smith of Newport News, Va.; a half brother, Herbert Smith of St. Cloud Fla.; six grandchildren.
Graveside service with full military honors will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Roxobel-Kelford Cemetery by Rev. James Scarbora and Rev. Wayne Garner.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, N.C., Monday from 7-9 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to Roanoke-Chowan Hospice, Ahoskie, N.C. 27910.
SARAH L. SMITH
LEXINGTON -- Sarah Lanier Smith, 77, of 400 Country Club Drive, Lexington, died Saturday evening in Lexington Memorial Hospital after 2 years of declining health and 3 days critical illness.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 27, 1998 at First United Methodist Church where she was a member. Dr. J. Hurley Thomas will officiate. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Memorial Park.
Mrs. Smith was born in Greer, South Carolina, January 21, 1921 to Harold H. Lanier and Ida Mae Mitchell Lanier. She was Co-Founder of National Wholesale Company and was active in the American Diabetes Association.
Surviving are: spouse, Edward (Eddie) Smith, Sr. of the home; a son, Eddie Smith, Jr. and wife, Jo of Greenville, NC; one daughter, Lynda Smith Swann and husband,Michael of Lexington, NC; three grandchildren, Christopher Blake Smith, Melissa Lanier Swann and Parker Smith Swann; three great-grandchildren, Grace Elizabeth Smith, Sue Daniels Smith and Anna Kathyrn Smith; one sister, Connie Craver of Cary, N.C.
The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the home, 400 Country Club Drive, Lexington.
Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, N.C. Affiliate, 3109 Poplarwood Court, Suite 125, Raleigh, N.C. 27604-1043.
