William A. "Bill" Jones Jr.
William A. "Bill" Jones Jr. 79, died early Sunday, March 7, 2004 at Rex Healthcare. He was born on Sept. 5, 1924 in Wake County to the late William Atlas Jones Sr. and Eliza Mitchell Jones. Bill, or W. A. as many knew him, had been involved in many community and private organizations. He served on the board of directors for the YRAC Fire Department, was appointed to be a county representative for Wake County Fire Departments, served as an auxiliary police officer for the Town of Cary, and was a member of the Eastern North Carolina Traffic Club for 43 years, where he served as president. Bill was a retired sales representative for several trucking companies in the area, and worked for many years in the clothing business. He served his church as an usher and a Sunday school teacher for 20 years.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 10, at Greenwood Forest Baptist Church in Cary. Burial followed in Raleigh Memorial Park Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Mary Elizabeth Jones; sons, Craig Jones and his wife, Pam of Henderson, and Terry Jones and his wife, Beth of Wake Forest; grandchildren, Dustin of Chapel Hill, Jamie, Noelle and Braxton of Wake Forest, Meghann Moore of Apex, and Merri Gray, Steven and Leah of Henderson; a brother, Charlie Jones of Garner; and a host of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, William, Lester and Wallace, and his sister, Ruby.
The family received relatives and friends at the Harold Poole Funeral Service and Crematory in Knightdale on Tuesday, March 9, and other times at the home.

Lloyd William Goolsby
Lloyd William Goolsby, 83 of Apex, died Sunday, March 7, 2004. He was born in Hall County, Ga.
Mr. Goolsby served for six years in World War II with Battery B. 633 FA Battalion, two years being served in Sicily and Africa during the invasion of Normandy, where he received the Purple Heart. He was a volunteer fireman with the Apex Fire Department for 20 years and was a constable for Wake County for four years. He was a member of Cary Church of Christ. He was always a hard worker. Mr. Goolsby was a member of the Powerline Hunting Club of Louisburg. He loved fishing, hunting and his community, but he loved his friends and family first.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah Goolsby; daughters, Sandra Strickland of Apex and Aloma Knouff and husband, Lowell of John's Island, S.C.; son, Larry Goolsby and wife, Glenda of Clayton; sisters, Lois Pendergraft of Apex and Elizabeth Allen of Willow Springs; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held in the Apex Funeral Home Chapel at 11 a.m. today, March 11, with the Rev. Jeff Archer officiating. Burial will follow in the Apex Cemetery. The family will receive friends 9-11 a.m. today prior to the service at Apex Funeral Home, 511 W. Williams St. (N.C. 55), Apex.
Shafter W. 'Buck' Buchanan
Shafter Watson Buchanan Jr., 79, of Cary, son of Shafter and Lillian Buchanan, died Feb. 16, 2004, at Rex Hospital.
Shafter was a Raleigh native and graduate of Hugh Morson High School, served in the Army Air Corps and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill. After several years as a photographer for the state Department of Tourism, he became the owner of Buchanan's Nursery. An avid private pilot, retirement provided him with time to pursue flying, as well as photography, travel and family.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Jones Buchanan; sons, Curt Buchanan of Raleigh and Jace Buchanan of Morganton; grandchildren, Amy B. Orders of Apex and Ben Buchanan of Savannah, Ga.; and a great-granddaughter.
The family would like to thank its very special caregivers for their loving attention and devotion, and also the dedicated people with Hospice.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, Feb. 21, at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Cary. Arrangements were by The Cremation Society of the Carolinas.

Joseph Cerelli
Joseph A. Cerelli, 90, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004. He is survived by two daughters; Eleanor Somma of Cary and Geraldine Fellerman of Clark, N.J.; two grandchildren, Gregory Somma of Cary and Cynthia Clavijo of Holly Springs; and five great-grandchildren, Matthew, Kristen and Nicholas Somma of Cary and Abigail and Austin Clavijo of Holly Springs.
A funeral Mass was held Saturday, Feb. 28, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church in Apex. Burial followed at Apex Cemetery. The family received friends Feb. 27 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary.
Gene L. 'Sandy' Simmons
Gene L. "Sandy" Simmons, 78, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004. Sandy was a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill where he received a bachelor's degree after serving in World War II with Company E of the 343rd Infantry of the 86th Black Hawk Division. He served in both the European and Asian theaters and was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious achievement. A resident of Cary for more than 30 years, Sandy was a retired salesman who enjoyed gardening and UNC Tar Heel sports. But his "all-time favorite" was simply being in the company of his loving family and friends.
He is survived by one son, Connelly Gene Simmons and wife, Mary Elizabeth of Raleigh; two daughters, Dorcas Ann Heffernan and husband, Steve of Marietta, Ga., and Mary-Margaret Armstrong and husband, John of Raleigh; two brothers, Ray Simmons and wife, Dimples of Brevard, his twin Jerry Simmons and wife, Ruby of Winston-Salem; one sister, Jewell Wells and husband, Donald of Whitesburg, Ga.; four grandchildren, Charles Sterling Price of Marietta, Ga., and Alexandra Elaine Simmons, Kaitlyn Iva Simmons and Connelly Ian Simmons, all of Raleigh; and three step-grandchildren, Shallin Nicole Mayher of Prague, The Czech Republic, and Benjamin Baker Armstrong and Thomas Garrison Armstrong of Raleigh. He is also survived by a broad extended family of caring in-laws, nieces and nephews.
Mr. Simmons was preceded in death by his wife of 32 years, Dorcas Iva Connelly Simmons.
A funeral service was held Sunday afternoon, Feb. 29, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary with Dr. Donald Wells officiating. Burial was on Monday, March 1, at Southlawn Memorial Park in Petersburg, Va.

Nannie Frances Pierce Hatfield
Nannie Hatfield, 100, of Apex went home to be with the Lord, Monday, March 1, 2004. She was born Jan. 16, 1904, the fourth of 10 children of the late Don and Betty Brooks Pierce. Nannie was the oldest member of Catawba Springs Christian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon S. Hatfield, and an infant son.
Survivors are son and daughter-in-law, Haywood S. and Frances Hatfield of Apex; daughter, Oleta H. Winchell of Raleigh; daughter and son-in-law, Nell H. and Roy Cochran Jr. of Apex; grandchildren, James "Ronnie" Cochran and wife Theresa, and Beverly C. Beland and husband Richard; step-grandchildren, Everett Perry and Mary Frances McCall; four great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-great-grandchildren. Nannie is also survived by her sister, Annie Louise Jones of Apex; sisters-in-law, B. Ruth Pierce and Lane Pierce of Apex; and brother-in-law Douglas Hatfield and wife Helen of Durham.
The family wishes to thank the caregivers that have helped with mama's care, especially for the loving and dedicated care that Sallie Ponder has so faithfully given her for more than six years.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 4, at Catawba Springs Christian Church, 6801 Ten Ten Road, Apex. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

M. Gerald 'Gerry' Dunham
Mr. M. Gerald "Gerry" Dunham, 89, of Woodland Terrace, beloved husband, father and grandfather, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004.
Mr. Dunham was born in Binghamton, N.Y., June 24, 1914, to the late Charles H. and Marie E. Dunham. He served in the U.S. Army for three years in the European Theater of Operations and was stationed at the 217th General Hospital. He retired from IBM in Research Triangle Park in 1975 after 33 years of service.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, the former Viviane Parseghian of Paris, France; his daughter-in-law, Faith M. Dunham, and her three children, Timothy, Ashley and Sean Daniels; and several cousins.
Mr. Dunham was predeceased by his son, Charles H. Dunham. Memorials may be made to the Charles H. Dunham Scholarship Fund, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Office of Development, 208 W. Franklin St., Chapel Hill, NC 27514 (Attn.: Marissa Sears).
Mary Herring Thompson
Mary Herring Thompson, 94, of Wilson died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2004. Graveside services will be conducted by the Rev. William Bussey today, Thursday, at 3 p.m. in Wilson's Maplewood Cemetery.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Lynn Whitley and her husband, William G. "Bill" Whitley, of Cary.
Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her husband, J.W. "Bill" Thompson.
The family received friends Wednesday evening at Joyner's Funeral Home.
Hubert B. 'Squeaky' Jordan
Hubert "Squeaky" Jordan, 85, died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004 at Rex Hospital surrounded by his daughters, sister, and family friends, Blenda Morris and Sammy Foster. A Cary native born on Jan. 21, 1919, he was preceded in death in 1991 by his loving wife, Katie, of 44 years.
He is survived by two daughters: Betsy Jordan of Cary and Kathy Reynolds of Sacramento, Calif. He leaves behind a loving sister, Betty Lee, of Raleigh; son-in-law, Bob Reynolds of Sacramento; two granddaughters, Katie Feldman and Emily Phillips and their husbands of Sacramento; 8-month-old great-grandson, Brian Lee Feldman, Jr.; and a devoted cousin, C.Y. Jordan of Cary.
A true American patriot, Squeaky loved his country and, upon graduation from Cary High School in 1938, served in the U.S. Navy for six years during World War II on the cruiser USS Concord and minesweeper USS Magnet. Between 1946 and 1949, he worked as a brakeman on the Southern Railroad. When his hometown was much smaller, he served as a Cary volunteer fireman and policeman in the 1950s. The town and mayor of Cary honored Squeaky in 1971 with "Squeaky Jordan Day" for his untiring efforts to support youth and build recreation programs in Cary. He started girls' softball in Cary in the 1960s with four teams.
Squeaky's passion in recent years was bowling, and he carried a 160-plus average in his three to four times a week entertainment. In earlier years, he was involved in the Raleigh Chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America and was lead singer in the barbershop chorus and quartet. He retired from the N.C. Department of Highways in 1981 after 32 years as a road materials and bridge inspector.

The family is thankful for highly professional and compassionate nurses and doctors in the Cardiac Care Unit at Rex Hospital who cared for him and his family during the last few days of his life.
