DR. LUIS F. MAHIQUEZ, SR.
BENSON -- Dr. Luis F. Mahiquez, Sr., 76, of 1078 N. Lincoln Street, died Thursday at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington.
Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Rose & Graham Funeral Home chapel, Benson.
Father Trent Watts will officiate.
Burial will follow in Roselawn Cemetery.
Dr. Mahiquez was born in Cuba, August 19, 1921, to the late Jose F. and Josefa Felico Mahiquez.
He graduated from the University of Havana in Cuba, and practiced medicine for 15 years in Cuba.
After moving to America, Dr. Mahiquez practiced general surgery and family medicine in Virginia.
He moved to Benson and opened his practice in 1967 until his retirement in 1987.
Dr. Mahiquez was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Survivors include wife, Zobeida Fernandez Mahiquez; sons, Luis F. Mahiquez, Jr. of Tampa, Fla., and Jose F. Mahiquez of Benson; daughters, Beidy M. Podgorski of Columbia, TN., Tessy M. Prades of Orlando, Fla., Rosa Maria Mahiquez of Tampa, Fla.; brothers, Jose F. Mahiquez of Miami, Orlando Mahiquez, Reinaldo Mahiquez, Neri F. Mahiquez, all of Cuba; and nine grandchildren.
LANA N. MILLER
CARY -- Lana Nicholson Miller, 50, of 108 Lendl Court in Cary, died on Monday, July 6, 1998 at Duke Medical Center.
A memorial service will be held today, at 2 p.m. at Christ The King Lutheran Church in Cary.
The family will receive friends in Luther Chapel at the church following the service.
The family requests that no flowers be sent.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice or to the American Cancer Society, Southeast Division, Inc., 11 S. Boylan Ave., Suite 221, Raleigh, N.C. 27611-7624.
IRENE E. MITCHELL
YOUNGSVILLE -- Irene Edwards Mitchell, funeral services 2 p.m. Sunday from the Youngsville Baptist Church.
Burial will follow in the Youngsville Cemetery.

ASHLYNN MacKENZIE PAUL
HAVELOCK -- Ashlynn MacKenzie Paul, 21 months, of Havelock, died Thursday at Craven Regional Medical Center, New Bern.
Funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at the First United Methodist Church, Miller Road, Havelock, with the pastor, the Rev'd Eric Lindblade, officiating.
Surviving: parents, Dr. Larry S. and Nancy C. Paul of Havelock; three brothers, Matthew Austin Paul, Allan Scott Paul and Kenan Stuart Paul, all of the home; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James H. Potter of Beaufort, maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward J. Cieszko of Havelock.
Preceded in death by paternal grandfather, Larry S. Paul, Sr.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m.

CHARLES DAVID PEARCE
APEX -- Charles David Pearce, 58, of 7404 Roberts Rd., died at Rex Hospital early Friday, July 10, 1998.
Mr. Pearce was a member ofGreen Level Baptist Church and a statistician with the State Employment Security Comm., with 37 years of service.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, July 12, 1998 at 2 p.m. in the Green Level Baptist Church by Dr. Gattis Perry and Rev. Greg Belcher. A private Burial will be at a later date in the church cemetery.
Survivors are: his wife, Ann Roberts Pearce of the home; daughters, Suzanne and husband, Mark Justice of Apex, Jennifer and husband, Chas Scott of Reidsville; a grandson, Garrett Justice; a brother, Joseph R.Pearce of Raleigh.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society Wake Co. Unit, 620 W. Morgan St., Raleigh, N.C. 27603 and to the Green-Level Baptist Church Building Fund, 8509, Green-Level Church Rd., Apex, N.C. 27502.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, July 11, 1998 at Apex Funeral Home, 511 West Williams St., HWY 55 Apex, N.C. and other times at the home.
JOHN R. "JACK" POWERS
CARY -- John R. "Jack" Powers, 82, Cary, died July 8, at Mayview Convalescent Center.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Norma, who resides at Mayview; his son, John R. Powers, Jr., of Portland, Oregon; his daughters, Sue Wessel of Apex and Marsha Ambrose of Cary; and nine grandchildren.
Jack was well-known by employees of many local businesses who welcomed his banter, his quips, and his witty T-shirt sayings as he completed retirement in Cary the past three years.
A native of Girard, Ohio, Jack held one of the longest records in the United Methodist Church with 65 years perfect attendance in Sunday School.
He was a graduate of Wittenberg University, a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity, a past commander of the American Legion, a retired steel industry marketing manager, and an avid gardener.
A memorial service will be held Friday, July 10, at 7 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Cary.
He will be buried in Ohio, Sunday, July 12.
The family requests memorials be made toward a grounds beautification program in his name at Girard First Methodist Church, 22 N. Market St., Girard, Ohio, 44420.
Arrangements for the Powers family are by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Inc., Raleigh.
BERNARD E. (BERNIE) SIMONSON
RALEIGH -- Bernard E. (Bernie) Simonson, 74, of Raleigh, died Wednesday, July 8th.
He was born May 14, 1924 in Des Plaines, IL.
During WWII Bernie served in the Army Air Corps, as a B17 bomber radio operator, completing 25 missions.
He returned to the University of Illinois, earning a Chemical Engineering degree, then worked at the Army Chemical Center, Edgewood Arsenal, Aberdeen, MD.
He retired to Raleigh in 1976 and worked in real estate part time.
Bernie was a member of the Masons, held several offices in the Masonic Grand Lodge and was active in the Shriners and the Chanters group.
He was a member of the Benson Memorial United Methodist Church.
He also belonged to the Organ Guild and served as substitute organist at various churches and at the state prison.
Additionally, he was an Amateur Radio Operator.
Surviving: niece, Linda Emmons Stephens of Concord; nephews, Bruce Alan Emmons of Charlotte and Jay Michael Emmons of Richmond; brother-in-law, W.F. (Bud) Emmons of Raleigh; eight grandnieces and a grandnephew.
Memorial arrangements are incomplete.
CHARLES V. WILKERSON
GREENVILLE --Mr. Charles V. Wilkerson, 87, died Friday, July 10, 1998.
The funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel.
Burial will be in Pinewood Memorial Park.
He was co-owner and retired president of S.G. Wilkerson and Sons Funeral Home, Inc., and Pinewood Memorial Park in Greenville.
He is survived by: daughter, Dr. Carole W. Samuelson of Birmingham, Alabama; son, Charles V. Wilkerson of Greenville; four grandchildren; three great-grandsons; sister, Christine W. Mashburn of Greensboro; brothers, George W. Wilkerson, Herbert M. Wilkerson, and Norman W. Wilkerson, all of Greenville.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and at other times will be at the home of Charles and Barbara Wilkerson.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Charles V. Wilkerson Scholarship Fund, c/o Kiwanis Club of Greenville, P.O. Box 1821, Greenville, N.C. 27835.
A. WAYNE "BUDDY" BAREFOOT
BENSON -- Mr. Alfred Wayne "Buddy" Barefoot, 44, of 1098 Shade Tree Road, died Monday at Betsy Johnson Hospital, Dunn.
Funeral service will be 3 p.m. today at Rose & Graham Funeral Home chapel.
Officiating will be the Revs. Bobby Smith and Glenn McCullen.
Burial will follow in Barefoot family cemetery.
Mr. Barefoot was born February 5, 1954, in Harnett County, to Alva Surcey Barefoot Lee of Benson, and the late Alfred E. "I.D." Barefoot.
He was employed in parts sales and auto sales for Capital Ford in Raleigh.
Mr. Barefoot was a member of Stone's Creek Advent Christian Church.
Survivors in addition to his mother include: wife, Carol Morgan Barefoot; son, Bradley Wayne Barefoot of the home; daughter, Amanda Carol Barefoot of the home; stepfather, R.C. Lee of Benson; sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis B. and Junior Johnson of Benson.

THOMAS E. KEE
APRIL 30, 1921 - JAN. 24, 1999
RALEIGH -- Thomas E. Kee, whose service at Shaw University covered a period of 41 years, died on Sunday, January 24, 1999 at the Wake Medical Center.
Tommy, as he was affectionately known by his associates, was born in Newark, New Jersey, the son of the late Floyd and Anna Kee.
He began his educational journey in the public school system of Newark.
He graduated from the city's Barringer High School.
He entered Shaw University in 1939.
There, he became well-known as a good student and as an excellent football player.
His education was interrupted from 1943-1946, while he served in the military forces.
Returning to Shaw in 1946, he graduated with the class of 1947.
Dr. Kee received the Master of Arts in French from Columbia University in New York City.
In 1959, he received Diplome d'etudes Francaises from the University of Bordeaux in France.
He later studied during several summer school sessions at various American Institutions of higher learning.
In 1983, Shaw University, recognizing his commitment to higher education, conferred on him the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. In 1948, Shaw University made him a member of its faculty.
Forty-one years later, he retired.
His work experience had seen him serve as a teacher and as an administrator.
As a teacher, he rose to the rank of Professor of Foreign Languages.
As an administrator, he served as Dean of Students, Vice-President for Student Affairs, for University Relations, for Institutional Relations, and also as Executive Vice President of the University.
He received praise from the administration and co-workers for his dedication.
For three years, he served as the chairman of the Selection Committee of the University's Athletic Hall of Fame.
He was inducted into that Hall in 1985.
Among his affiliations and memberships are: Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, which he served as Basileus during his college days; Martin Street Baptist Church, where he served for many years as a member of the Board of Deacons, Director of the Male Chorus, and Director of the Choral Choir.
He had memberships in many other organizations too numerous to list.
Family members who remember his productive and fruitful life are his wife of 55 years, Elnora McCrimmon Kee; a daughter, Dr. Brenda E. Kee of Louisville, Ky.; two sons, Thomas E. Kee and Timothy O. Kee, both of Raleigh; three sisters, Florence Hickman of East Orange, N.J., Norma Crayne of Atlanta, Ga. and Vivian Lampkin of Montclair, N.J.; one brother, Horace Kee of Plainfield, N.J.; five grandchildren, Portia Kee, Andrea Kee, Paris Kee of Raleigh, Alanna Kee Brown and Colin Kee Brown of Louisville, Ky.; one son-in-law, Wayne S. Brown; one daughter-in-law, Dietra B. Kee and a host of relatives and friends.
Visitation will be Thursday, January 28, 1999 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Martin Street Baptist Church, 1001 E. Martin Street.
Funeral services will be held Friday, January 29, 1999 at 11 a.m. at the Martin Street Baptist Church, with Dr. Charles T. Bullock, Pastor, officiating and Lightner Funeral Home in charge.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Thomas E. Kee, Scholarship Fund at Shaw University, 118 E. South Street, Raleigh, N.C. 27601.
