ETHEL B. BOWDEN
CHAPEL HILL -- Ethel Barbour Bowden of Chapel Hill, died Friday evening at UNC Hospitals.
A native of Johnston County, she was a member of the Lystra Baptist Church and a homemaker.
Mrs. Bowden was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Bowden, in April of 1996.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Walker's Funeral Chapel by Bruce Benton.
Burial will be in the Antioch Baptist Church cemetery.
She is survived by daughter, Edna Stearns of Wrightsville Beach; sister, Thelma Wheeler of Durham; and a brother, Hubert Barbour of Charlotte, Michigan; three grandchildren, Warren Stearns, Jr., Sandra Stearns and husband, Jared Greenamyre, Scott Stearns, Cathy Newton and husband, David; three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 Sunday evening at Walker's Funeral Home.
JOHNNIE S. CARELOCK
STONY POINT -- Johnnie Ersell Smith Carelock, 80, Route 2, died Friday 8:45 a.m. in Catawba Memorial Hospital, Hickory after an extended illness.
Born in Union County, Sept. 12, 1916, she was a daughter of the late William Van Smith and Mary Weaver Smith Hufnagel.
She was retired from Cone Mills, White Oak Plant, Greensboro and member of Temple Baptist Church, Stoney Point.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, John William of Carelock; one son, John William Carelock, Jr. and one brother.
Survivors; three sons, Charles Carelock of Stoney Point, Dean Carelock of Charlotte, Bobby Carelock or Raleigh; three daughters, Barbara Ivey of Rock Hill, S.C., Bettie Jean Russell of Statesville, Annie Van Shropshire of Greensboro; one brother, Bill Smith, Jr. of Toms River, N.J.; one sister, Ruth Burgin of Wingate; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral 11 a.m. Monday at Temple Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Carroll Moffitt.
Body will lie in state at the church 30 minutes prior to funeral.
Burial will be 3 p.m. Monday at Lakeview Memorial Cemetery, Greensboro.
Family will receive friends Sunday from 3-5 p.m. at Chapman Funeral Home, Stony Point; other times will assemble at the home.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Jeff Shropshire, Brad Carelock, Charles Carelock, Jr., Ronald Ivey, Jr., Joseph Ivey, Robert Russell, Jr.
Honorary pallbearer, Benny Carelock.
She was a wonderful person, a very dear friend and a loving mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed by all.

EDWARD DEMPSEY "ED" CARTER
KNIGHTDALE -- Edward Dempsey "Ed" Carter, 77, of 1532 Hodge Road, died Saturday, June 21, 1997 at Rex Hospital.
Mr. Carter served his country in the U.S. Army and was retired with 43 years of service from Continental Baking Co.
Graveside service 1 p.m. Monday, June 23, 1997 at Montlawn Memorial Park, Raleigh.
Surviving: wife, Sallie Gay Carter; daughters, June C. Walters and her husband, Bobby Walters of Raleigh, Vann C. Zick and her husband, Carl Zick of Cary; grandchildren, Bobby C. Walters, Jr., Karla Vanessa Zick, Julie Nichole Zick, Matthew Carl Zick; brothers, Idorice Carter of Wendell, Jesse W. Horton of Zebulon; very dearest friends for over 24 years, Doris and William Watson of Knightdale.
The family will receive relatives and friends Sunday, June 22, 1997 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service and Crematory, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, 7-8 p.m. and other times at the home on Hodge Road.

ALTON M. COMSTOCK
RALEIGH -- Alton M. Comstock, 73, died June 21, 1997 at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.
He was born in Armour, New York, but was raised in Elma.
Alton served in World War II with the Eighth Division Army Air Corps and he was employed as an operating engineer.
A Chapel Service is scheduled for Tuesday, June 24, 1997 at 11 a.m. in the Raleigh Memorial Park Chapel Mausoleum located at 7501 Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh.
He is survived by his wife, Lavina - (Dinah); daughters, Deborah Hilliard and Denise Mundy; sons, Alton M., Alan M., Roger J. and Dale R.; brothers, Emerson and Lowell; sisters, Lydia, Hazel and Nellie.
Alton was preceded in death by his parents, Burt Comstock and Nellie Gieck; brothers, Alan, Bert, Clayton, David and Frank; sisters, Beatrice and Eleanor.
Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas.
KYLE S. DINGESS
RALEIGH -- Kyle Steven Dingess, infant son of Gary and Terri Dingess, of 2105 Cardhu Way, died Thursday, June 19 [1997].
There will a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Sacred Heart Cathedral by the Very Reverend Tim O'Connor.
There will be a graveside service conducted at Stonewall Memory Gardens in Manassas, Va.
The family will receive at Price Funeral Home in Mannasas, from 12 p.m. Tuesday until the time of services.
Surviving, in addition to parents, paternal grandparents, Joe and Ann Meixner of Lincoln Park, Mi.; maternal grandparents, Howard and Kay Snook of Manassas, Va.; maternal great-grandmother, Anna Snook of Locust Grove, Va.; maternal great-grandparents, Mary and Bob Beache of Arlington, Va.

RUTH M. GAMMON
RALEIGH -- Ruth Melton Gammon, died June 19, 1997 at Rex Hospital.
She was born on January 30, 1917 in Danville, Virginia.
She was the beloved mother of five children, five grandchildren and countless others whom she touched with her love and compassion.
The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Temple Baptist Church.
Burial will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Sunday 7-9 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home on St. Mary's St. and other times at the home.
Ruth is survived by her five children, Ray Gammon of Greenville, NC, Kenneth Gammon of Elkhart, Indiana, Pat Foster of Cary, Mike Gammon of Durham and Rick Gammon of Raleigh; her brother, Jim Melton of Danville, Va.; her sisters, Minnie Lindley of Hampstead, NC, and Jean Swicegood of Danville, Va.; and her five grandchildren, Chris, Laura, Ashley, Austin and Josh.

RUSSELL L. HOLLOWELL
ATLANTIC BEACH -- Russell L. Hollowell, 88, died June 21, 1997.
He farmed in Wayne County, served in the Army during WWII, was manager of Belk Stores in Goldsboro, Tarboro and Plymouth.
He was the co-owner of Hollowell's Motel in Atlantic Beach.
Services will be held Monday 11 a.m. at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City.
He is survived by his wife, Betty M. Hollowell; daughter, Jolene H. McCann of Morehead City; son, Gene Hollowell of Atlantic Beach; sister, Margie Clark of Tarboro; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Ray Hollowell.

LEE HART HUFFINES
RALEIGH -- Lee Hart Huffines, of Raleigh, died Saturday at her home.
She was born on July 12, 1927 to Robert Lee Hart and Lucy Blair Wray of Southern Pines.
She moved to Reidsville in 1942, and to Raleigh in 1958.
Lee attended Salem College, graduated from UNC-Greensboro in 1950, was a member of the Junior League of Raleigh, and St. Michael's Episcopal Church.
Surviving are her husband, Dewey Hobson Huffines, Jr.; son, Dewey Hart Huffines and his wife, Della Williams; grandson, Hart Williams Huffines, all of Raleigh.
Funeral services will be private.
The family suggest that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Rex Cancer Center, 4420 Lake Boone Trail, Raleigh, N.C. 27607; or Hospice of Wake County, 4513 Creedmoor Road, Raleigh, N.C. 27612.

MARTHA ALICE JENKINS
AHOSKIE -- Martha Alice Jenkins, 53, of 10 Shaftesbury Rd., died June 21, 1997 in Roanoke Chowan Hospital Ahoskie.
She was born in Nash County, and raised in Aulander, and resided in Ahoskie.
Many years prior to her death.
She was an interior designer, and owner of Martha Jenkins Interiors, Ahoskie, a graduate of U.N.C. Greensboro, Board Certified member American Society of Interior Designers, member of the Board of Visitors, Chowan College, Murfreesboro.
A member of the Board of Directors of Wachovia Bank, Ahoskie and a member of St. Thomas' Episcopal Church.
Survivors include her husband, Robert C. Jenkins; two daughters, Miss Elizabeth Claire Jenkins of Charleston, S.C.; Emily Lois Jenkins of Chapel Hill; two brothers, Coy B. Bell, Jr. of Mebane, George R. Bell of Raleigh.
Memorial service will be held at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, 1997, by Rev. Phillip Glick.
Interment will be in Aulander Cemetery, Aulander.
The family requests that, in lieu flowers, donations be made to St. Thomas' Episcopal Church, 424 West Church St., Ahoskie, N.C. 27910.
