JAN. 1, 1933 - JUNE 19, 1997

GARNER -- Bernie Schirmer, 64, of 707 Nellane Drive, died Thursday, while fishing at Lake Wheeler.
Memorial service will be 6 p.m. today at Bryan-Lee Funeral Chapel.
Surviving: wife, Mary Lassiter; daughters, Debby S. Harris of Bergen, N.Y., Diana S. Alexander and Donna S. Muster, both of Rochester, N.Y., Doreen S. Sinclair of Corpus Christi, Texas, Dolly S. Tytler of Chili, N.Y.; son, David F. Schirmer of Pensacola, Fla.; sister, Margaret Neville of Orlando, Fla.; nine grandchildren.

ALISON W. TILTON

CREAM RIDGE, N.J. -- Alison Katherine Whitaker Tilton, 90, of Cream Ridge, N.J., passed away on Friday at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Hamilton, N.J.
Born in Newfoundland, Canada, she resided in North Carolina, until 1972, when she moved to Groveville, N.J.
She had lived in Cream Ridge since 1987.
Mrs. Tilton was a member of the Groveville United Methodist Church, the Groveville UMC Women's Society, and the Golden Hour Seniors of Groveville.
Wife of the late Henry W. Whitaker and Carl L. Tilton, and daughter of the late Allen and Laura Hoffe.
She is survived by four daughters and two sons-in-law, Lela B. Plummer of Cream Ridge, Julia D. and Gene Lewis of Springdale, Arkansas, Katherine and Russell Mimms of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Eleanor Worrell of Penndel, Pa.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Henry and Mildred Whitaker of Hamilton, N.J., Walter and Marylou Whitaker of Navarre, Florida; one sister, Ada Blake of Lewisport, Canada; one brother and sister-in-law, George and Pearl Hoffe of Toronto, Canada; 19 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
A memorial funeral service will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Groveville United Methodist Church, 447 Church Street, Groveville. Interment will follow in the Montlawn Memorial Park, Raleigh, N.C.
There will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Tilton's memory may be made to the Groveville United Methodist Church, 447 Church Street, Groveville, N.J. 08620.

JOHN W. TOTE, JR.

ASHEBORO -- John W. Tote, Jr., of 611 Nassau Trail, Asheboro, died June 20, 1997 at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.
Funeral 10 a.m. Monday, First Baptist Church with Dr. John Rogers and Rev. Mark Hall officiating.
Graveside service will be Monday at 4 p.m. at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell, WV.
Mr. Tote was a native of McDowell County, WV, and retired from B.B. Walker Co. as National Sales Manager.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Mr. Tote was a member of First Baptist Church.
He was a former member of the Board of Directors of Cross Road Rest and Retirement Center, where he was the chairman of the fundraising drive for the Alzeheimer's Center.
Surviving: wife, Mrs. Beulah Dale Tote of the home; son, John W. Tote, III and his wife, Mrs. Wanda Winstead Tote of Cary.
The family will be at Ridge Funeral Home, 6-8 p.m. Sunday and at the home at other times.
Memorials may be made to the N.C. Mental Health Assoc., 3820 Bland Road, Raleigh, N.C. 27609 or First Baptist Church, 133 N. Church St., Asheboro, N.C. 27203.

HELEN WORRELL WHITLEY

COMO -- Helen Worrell Whitley, born Feb. 9, 1908, a daughter of the late Annie Fowler and Lockey Thomas Worrell of Como, Hertford County, died June 21, 1997 at Southampton Memorial Hospital's East Pavilion, Franklin, Virginia.
She was predeceased in death by her husband, Jim A. Whitley, her brother, Lynwood R. Worrell, sister, Mildred Worrell Brett, little sister, Dorothy and nephew, Donald T. Brett.
She was a former member of the Sunbeam Baptist Church, joining New Hope Baptist Church in 1927 after her marriage.
Since the closing of New Hope Church in 1982, she has retained her membership at Mount Horeb Methodist Church.
At the New Hope Church, she served as pianist/organist, youth Sunday School Teacher and President of the Women's Society of Christian Service.
She and her husband were merchants in Como, before retiring to their farm home.
She is survived by one nephew, Jerry W. Brett; four great-nieces, Donna B. Francis, Tracy B. Pearce, Michelle B. Black and Jerri-Kaye Brett; two great-great-nephews, Nathan Brett Pearce and Tanner Francis; great-great-niece, Lauren Pearce of Murfreesboro; two brothers-in-law, Robert W. Whitley of Portsmouth, Va., Frank Irvin Whitley of Franklin, Va.
She is also survived by several cousins, her guardians, Sarah and Marvin Worrell and a host of relatives and friends.
She also leaves her devoted roommate, Mrs. Sarah E. Bradshaw, resident companions, nurses, doctors and staff at Southampton Memorial Hospital's East Pavilion, where she has lived for the past eight years.
Services will b e held Monday at 2:30 p.m. in the Holland-Rideout Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in Poplar Springs Cemetery.
The Rev. Derek Koolman, pastor of Mt. Horeb Methodist Church and the Rev. Kenneth Williams, pastor of Sunbeam/Newsoms Baptist Church are conducting the services.
The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon, from 3:30-5 p.m., at Holland-Rideout Funeral Home.

HELEN H. WILSON

LOUISBURG -- Mrs. Helen Hicks Wilson, 84, died Saturday morning, June 21, 1997.
Funeral service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. from the Duke Memorial Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Jay Meadows and Rev. George Megill.
Burial will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery, Louisburg.
Surviving: daughter and son-in-law, Jane Wilson and Al Langley of Louisburg; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Emma King Hicks of Wilson, Mrs. Margaret Hicks of Cary, Miss Lucy Wilson of Louisburg; brother-in-law, Sam Wilson of Fayetteville, grandson, Robert Elliott of Justice.
The family will receive friends at the home at all times.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Franklin County Cancer Society, c/o Mrs. Nannie Wrenn, 748 N.C. 561 Highway, Louisburg, N.C. 27549 or the Justice Fire Department.
Arrangements are being handled by Lancaster Funeral Home.

JEANETTE PRICE RAY

RALEIGH -- Jeanette Price Ray, 57, of 4400 Lake Ridge Dr., died Wednesday, June 18, 1997 at her home, after an 18-month battle with cancer.
A native of Spring Hope, she was a 1957 graduate of Franklinton High School.
At age 22, Jeanette began her long career with the State of North Carolina.
Almost three decades of that 34-year career, were spent with the State Community College System.
She served as a budget coordinator, an administrative officer and at the time of her retirement in May 1996 was Assistant Director of the Departmental and Equipment Services Section.
In 1964, she was honored as Woman of the Year by the Capital Tarheel Chapter of the American Business Women's Association.
She served four years as General Treasurer of the N.C. State Employees Association.
Jeanette was also a member of the Association of Community College Business Officers.
Jeanette was the daughter of Nellie Jeffreys Price and the late James Burton Price.
Funeral service 11 a.m. Friday, June 20, 1997 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service Chapel, Knightdale.
Burial, Oakdale Cemetery, Spring Hope, N.C.
Surviving: daughter, Wanda Ray Calder and her husband Mark of Raleigh; grandson, William Chase Calder; granddaughter, Allison Jeanette Calder; mother, Nellie Jeffreys Price of Raleigh; brother, Jim Price of Pelham, Alabama.
A scholarship fund to benefit students of the North Carolina Community College System has been established in memory of Jeanette Ray's years of service and devotion in the Department of Community Colleges.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Jeanette Ray Scholarship fund payable to the Department of Community Colleges.
Donations may be sent to the attention of Mrs. Jan Hopkins, Finance Division, Department of Community Colleges, 200 West Jones St., Raleigh, N.C. 27603.

ELIZABETH "HELEN" G. SCHUBERT

CARY -- Elizabeth "Helen" Gunnery Schubert died 19 June, 1997.
She was born 5 October, 1947 in Perth, Scotland, the only daughter of the late Bernard and Margaret Frances Harle Ward Gunnery.
She was raised in Bombay, India, and near Bristol, England.
She emigrated to the U.S.A. in 1969, at the time of her marriage.
She lived in New Jersey and Manassas, Virginia, before settling in North Carolina.
She was a Registered Nurse, having obtained her nursing education in England, and her BSA at George Mason University, Va.
She most recently worked at Western Wake Medical Center.
She was a member of the GFWC of Holly Springs, and a volunteer for the American Cancer Society's Road to Recovery Program.
She was a member of Sunrise United Methodist Church in Holly Springs.
Helen is survived by her husband, Howard J. Schubert; daughters, Kathryn M. and Karen A. Schubert; brother and sister-in-law, John F.B. and Catherine M. Gunnery; and nephew, W.B. Gunnery of Elberton, England; aunts, Aletha and Ursula Gunnery.
Memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Saturday at the Chapel of Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary.
Family will receive friends immediately following the service.
Private family entombment will be held 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Pinelawn Memorial Park, Southern Pines, N.C.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 620 W. Morgan St., Raleigh, N.C.

FLOYD THOMAS BOYCE SR.

CHARLOTTE -- Floyd Thomas Boyce, Sr., died Wednesday, June 18, 1997 at Carolinas Medical Center.
He was born March 22, 1926 in Northampton County, N.C., the son of the late Leon L. Boyce and Lena Barrett Boyce.
He was a graduate of Jackson High School in 1943, where he was president of his class.
He served in the United States Navy and was later a graduate of Elon College.
Mr. Boyce joined North Carolina National Bank in 1961, as an assistant trust officer.
Promoted to trust officer in 1964, he was named vice-president and trust officer in 1967.
He was named director of Real Estate Investment Services in 1978 and senior vice president in January of 1984.
Mr. Boyce retired in May, 1996 after a total of 34 years with Nations Bank.
Mr. Boyce was a member of the Make America Beautiful Committee, the Charlotte Board of Realtors Board of Directors, Charlotte Central Association President, Elon College Alumni Association, Piedmont Chapter Chairman, Mecklenburg County Zoning Planning Committee Chairman, Research and Economics, Charlotte Board of Realtors member, Society of Industrial and Office Realtors (SIOR) member, National Association of Industrial Office Parks (NAIOP), counselor of Real Estate (CRE) and the American Society of Real Estate Counselors.
He was also on the Board of Directors of the Ballantyne Country Club, served as president of Boyce Properties, LLC, and also served as an usher at St. Mark's Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his loving wife, Mary Lou Yates Boyce, three children, Lou Ann Roulette, Lisa Boyce and Thomas Boyce, all of Charlotte; three stepchildren, Ann Minner of Austin, Texas, Mark Minner of Edwardsville, Ill., and Scott Minner of Chesapeake, Va., as well as one sister, Betty Boyce Green of New Bern, N.C.
The funeral will be 5 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, with Dr. C. Peter Setzer and Rev. Ed Schmidt officiating.
The family will receive friends at Harry & Bryant Company, 500 Providence Road, Friday from 7-9 p.m.
Those who wish may make memorial contributions to St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 1001 Queens Road, Charlotte, N.C., Rehoboth United Methodist Church in Jackson, N.C.; or the American Cancer Society at 500 E. Morehead St., Suite 211, Charlotte, N.C. 28202.
Harry & Bryant Company is serving the family of Mr. Boyce.

EVERETT P. BROOKS

SANFORD -- Everett Perkins Brooks, 76, of 2531 Buffalo Church Rd., died Wednesday [June 18, 1997] at Central Carolina Hospital.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. Carl Rush.
Burial will be in Buffalo Cemetery.
Surviving: wife, Virginia Brooks; daughter, Suzanne B. Mills of Sanford; son, Michael Brooks of Culpeper, VA; brother, C.B. Brooks of Siler City; sister, Kitty Johnston of Newberry, SC; five grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Hospice of Lee County, 109-A Vance St., Sanford, NC, or to the First Presbyterian Church.
Arrangements by Miller Funeral Home.

VIOLA GLENN BRUNO

DURHAM -- Viola Glenn Bruno, 87, died Tuesday [June 17, 1997] at Rose Manor Health Care Center in Durham, after a brief illness.
Surviving; one stepson, Burnett Blake of Wilmington, DE; several step-grandchildren; 13 nieces ad nephews.
Visitation 3-3:30 p.m. Saturday and funeral service will follow immediately at Scarborough & Hargett Funeral Home.
Family will receive friends at the home of her niece, Lois Clayton, 2209 Harris Road, Rougemont, N.C.
