Admiral Mason retired in 1972 from the Navy as commanding officer of the Naval Ship Engineering Center in Hyattsville, MD, a group which then encompassed the engineering talent involved in the design, building, and support of naval ships. For the final half of his naval career, he was an Engineering Duty Officer whose principal jobs were in research and development and in the management of industrial or engineering functions of the Navy Bureau of Ships.
A graduate of the Naval Academy in 1938, Admiral Mason helped sail Vamarie to Bermuda, the first year the Naval Academy raced there in 1938. In 1949, he earned his Master's Degree in engineering electronics from the Navy Postgraduate School then in Annapolis.
During his first 15 years in the Navy, Admiral Mason was a seagoing officer, principally in cruisers and destroyers. He joined USS Nashville (CL43) as an ensign in 1938 and left her as a lieutenant commander in 1944. Nashville was part of the task force that launched Doolittle's raiders to Japan, and General Douglas MacArthur rode Nashville as his flagship in several invasions.
In 1944, Admiral Mason became executive officer of the USS Brush (DD745), operating as the first of the radar pickets for the force.
In 1945, as World War II ground to an end, he became commanding officer of USS Wadsworth (DD516), part of the invasion force of Okinawa. Wadsworth remained in Japan until November 1945.
Admiral Mason's final naval command afloat was as commanding officer of USS Nicholas (DDE 449) during the Korean War. He considered that command his most rewarding assignment, and the ship's call sign, "Sandals," was the name given to the sailboat he and his wife sailed to Bahamas every other year from 1978-1990.
He and his family lived in Falls Church, VA, during his assignments in the Washington area from 1955-1960 and 1965-1972. He moved to Annapolis, in 1973, where he remained until his marriage to Jean Coward in 1991 when he moved to Whispering Pines, NC. In April of 1997 they moved to Durham, NC.
