She was born June 5, 1921 in Scotland Co., N.C., to the late Jesse and Sarah Alma Quick Butler.
She was retired from Toastmaster.
Funeral 11 a.m. Saturday, June 14, 1997 at Montpelier Presbyterian Church, Wagram.

Burial, Springhill Cemetery, Wagram.
Surviving: husband, Cecil B. Pierson, Sr.; daughters, Judy Voss of Morehead City, Kimberly McCowen of Long Beach, Ellen Sharpe, Deloris Sessoms, and Betty Bracey of Wagram; sisters, twin sister, Doris Maudlin, Margaret Chavis both of Laurinburg; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren.

JENNIE K. SIMON
NEW BERN -- Jennie Kaleel Simon, 81, of 1801 Spencer Avenue, died Friday [June 13, 1997] at her home.
She was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church.
Rosary service will be 5 p.m. Sunday, Cotten Chapel.
She is survived by: son, Louis J. Simon, Jr. of New Bern; daughters, Adele S. Pollard of Cary, Jeanne S. Williams of Holly Springs, Mary S. Rumer of New Bern, Cecilia S. Wilson of Arapahoe, and Peggy S. Wissinger of Cary; sisters, Margaret K. Linsdau of Detroit, Michigan and Adele K. Carpenter of Conover; seven grandchildren; one step-grandchild.
The family will receive friends at Cotten Funeral Home from 3-5 p.m.

ELIZABETH W. SMALLEY
RALEIGH -- Elizabeth Margaret Willoughby Smalley, 69, of 7208 Gumwood Lane, died on June 12, 1997, at Wake Medical Center after a brief illness.
Mrs. Smalley was born June 14, 1927, in Norwalk, Connecticut, and was a resident of Raleigh for six years.
She is survived by her beloved husband, John J. Smalley; sons, Albert and James of Florida, Edward of Ohio, Richard of Raleigh, Douglas of Connecticut, David of California, Dennis of Massachusetts; daughters, Judy of California, Janice and Karen of Connecticut; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sisters, Irene, Shirley, Charlotte, and Eleanor; two brothers, James and Stephen.
A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at Oakwood Cemetery.

BILL SPIVEY
AULANDER -- Bill Spivey, 59, of the 600 block of Carroll Street, died June 12, 1997, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Mr. Spivey was born in Bertie County, and was a member of Connaritsa Baptist Church, Aulander, where he served as a deacon for many years. He was mayor of Aulander, for ten years and served on the Aulander town council.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.
He was serving as postmaster of Woodland, N.C., and was the former postmaster of Gatesville, N.C.
Mr. Spivey was a member and district director of the National Association of Postmasters, and a member and past president of the Tri-County Association of Postmasters.
He was also a member of Woodland Men's Club and a former member of the Gatesville Ruritan Club.
He was a graduate of East Carolina University.
Survivors include his wife, Janice Tucker Spivey; daughter, Janice Spivey Teel of Greenville; son, William Owen Spivey of Newport News, Va.; sister, Ruth Spruill of Aulander; brother, Bob Spivey of Windsor; and twin grandchildren, Jamie and Megan Spivey of Newport News.
A funeral service will be conducted at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, in Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Alan Mizelle and the Rev. Wint Hale, Jr.
Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery, Windsor, N.C.
Friends may join the family at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday.

IONA J. TYSON
WAYNESVILLE -- Helen Iona Jones Tyson, 57, of 289 Lenwood Drive, Forest Park, died Thursday, June 12, 1997, unexpectedly at her residence.
She was a native of Raleigh.
She was a former resident of Greenville, and had resided in Haywood County, since, 1967.
She was currently employed as the elementary supervisor for the Haywood County School System.
Surviving: husband, Eugene Tyson; daughters, Jeanie Tyson of Raleigh, Sherri Tyson of Cumming, GA; sister, Betty Ann Jones of Spring, Texas.
Funeral 3 p.m. Sunday, June 15, 1997, First Baptist Church of Waynesville.
Visitation from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, June 14, 1997, Wells Funeral Home in Waynesville.

ADELLE C. WILSON
DURHAM -- Mrs. Adelle Capps Wilson, 72, of Durham, died Friday [June 13, 1997].
A native of Johnston County, she was the daughter of the late Parker Bartley and Mamie Hinnant Capps.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, at Carr United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Brian Wingo officiating.
Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Sunday, at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.

JOHN R. "JACK" SCHMITZER
RALEIGH -- John R. "Jack" Schmitzer of Raleigh, died Friday, June 13, 1997.
Mr. Schmitzer grew up in Beacon, N.Y., and retired from IBM after 39 years of service.
He was a parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi R.C. Church, and was a volunteer for SCORE in Raleigh, after his retirement.
Surviving are his wife, Pat; daughters, Julie Amanna, husband, Pil and children Courtney, Jackie and Hayley of Raleigh, Suzy Osborne, husband, Dale and children, Jacob, Hannah and Lydia of Chapel Hill, Anne Deaton, husband, David and children, Lucy and Ryan of Key Largo, FL; son, John and wife, Amy of Roanoke, Va.; sister, Jean MacAvery of Beacon, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Florence Lynch.
Visiting hours are Monday from 2-4 p.m., at St. Francis of Assisi R.C. Church, 11401 Leesville Road, where the Funeral Mass will be offered at 7 p.m.

She was a member of Cedar Falls Baptist Church and a member of the Caring Sunday School Class at Cedar Falls Baptist Church in Fayetteville.
She was formerly a member of Apex Baptist Church and the former rural Mail Carrier in Apex.
Funeral service 11 a.m. Monday, June 16, 1997, at Cedar Falls Baptist Church, Rev. Floyd Benfield officiating.
Graveside service 3 p.m. Monday, at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Durham.
Surviving: son, Signal Corps Colonel George Calvin Atkins, retired U.S. Army of Fayetteville; sister, Virgie Goodwin of Raleigh; brothers, Avery Betts of Wilson, Odell Betts of Fuquay-Varina; four grandchildren, Captain Robert Atkins, U.S. Air Force of Reston, Va., Dr. Kevin Atkins of Holly Springs, Elizabeth and Rodrigues of Greenville, S.C., Timothy Atkins of Arlington, Va.; great-grandson, Paul Calvin Rodriguez of Greenville, S.C.

MARY JENKINS BULLOCK
KANNAPOLIS -- Mrs. Mary Jenkins Bullock, 95, of Wesleyan Arms Inc High Point formerly of Kannapolis, died Wednesday, June 11, 1997.
Mrs. Bullock was born October 31, 1901, in Granville County, the daughter of Romulus Sanders and Mary Frances Moss Jenkins.
She attended Louisburg College and graduated from Centre College in Danville, Kentucky.
She was a French, Latin and English school teacher, teaching in the Wilton, Black Mountain and Kannapolis school systems.
Mrs. Bullock was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Kannapolis, where she was a long-time teacher of the Exodus Sunday School Class.
On November 28, 1928, she married William Junius Bullock, who was past Superintendent of the Kannapolis City schools and he preceded her in death, August 10, 1987.
Surviving: two daughters, Mrs. Mary B. Ward of Asheboro; Mrs. Jane B. Lock of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sons, William J. Bullock of Kannapolis, David O. Bullock of Raleigh; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Kannapolis.

W. GENE CHAMBERS
LILLINGTON -- Williard Gene Chambers, 60, died Friday [June 13, 1997].
He was a sewing machine mechanic for Gould and Goodrich Company, in Lillington.
Funeral service will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday, at O'Quinn Peebles Funeral Home, by the Rev. Ed Rogers and Rev. Roy McLamb.
Burial will be Westview Memorial Gardens.
Surviving: wife, Evelyn McLeod Chambers; daughters, Susan Darlene Starling and Wanda Jean Adams both of Lillington, Anna Ruth Peele of Fayetteville; five grandchildren.
