William Calvin Currie
William Calvin Currie, 77, of 5410 N.C. 751, Apex, died Friday evening, July 23, 2004 at home surrounded by his family.
A service celebrating his life and homegoing was held Monday, July 26, at 1 p.m. in the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
His wife, Thelma Odell Currie, and his son, James Ray Currie, preceded Mr. Currie in death. He is survived by a son, William Paul Currie and his wife, Debbie of Durham; a daughter, Patricia Currie Glover of Coats; and a brother, Edward Currie, and a sister, Myrtle Partin, both of Durham. Also surviving are eight loving grandchildren and 12 special great-grandchildren.
The Currie family received friends on Sunday evening, July 25, at the Apex Funeral Home.
Robin Cynthia Jones
Robin Cynthia Eschert Jones, 50, of Apex, died July 22, 2004. Mrs. Jones was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Cary. Mrs. Jones is survived by her husband, Samuel W. Jones; children, Courtney, Hillary and Doug-las, all of the home; mother, Rosemarie Duffin, and father, George Eschert, both of Philadelphia; sister, Gaye Lynne Eschert of Stratford, Conn.; and brother, George Eschert of Trumbull, Conn.
The family received friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 25, at Apex Funeral Home. A prayer service followed.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in the First Lutheran Church, Southington, Conn.

William Carey Dowd
William Carey Dowd, 69, of Holly Springs died Sept. 23, 2004. Mr. Dowd was born July 25, 1935 to Samuel Glen Dowd and Leyta Welch Dowd. He was employed as a security guard for the Cooper Group in Apex.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 1, at Apex Funeral Home Chapel. The family received friends one hour prior to service. He is survived by his brother, Clyde Dowd and wife, Linda of New Hill; and two sisters, Joyce Durham and husband, Leo of Greensboro, and Shirley Johnson and husband, W.C. Jr. of Bennettsville, S.C.
Marie Arrington Hinton
Marie Arrington Hinton, 63, of Raleigh died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004. Marie was a native of Johnston County and the daughter of the late William Roy Arrington and of Thelma Davis Arrington, who survives her. She worked as secretary and treasurer at U.S. Piping Inc. and in the Trust Department at Wachovia Bank. In addition, Marie was a licensed real estate broker and her favorite hobby was genealogy research.
In addition to her mother, Thelma A. Gregory, she is survived by her husband of 41 years, David O. Hinton of Raleigh; her son, David Scottie Hinton, and his wife, Tonya Caudill Hinton, and their son and Marie's grandson, David Samuel Hinton; and her brother, Roy Bruce Arrington of Las Cruces, N.M.
A graveside service was held Friday afternoon, Oct. 1, at Raleigh Memorial Park in Raleigh.

Bertha Howell Holt
Bertha Howell Holt, 99, of Apex died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004. She lived and worked in Wake and Durham counties and was a member of Salem Baptist Church of Apex. She maintained a positive outlook on life and enjoyed growing beautiful flowers. She enjoyed cooking and insisted on sharing food with friends and neighbors. She also was very independent and continued to drive her car until the age of 98.
She was predeceased by her husbands, Alton Holland, Bill Reid and Raymond Holt, and a daughter, Marie Holland Wheeler.
She is survived by stepdaughter, Patsy H. Thompson and husband, Vince; stepson, Joe Holt and wife, Marie; three stepgrandchildren, Glenda Smith and husband, Staley, Kelli Jones and husband, Kevin, and David Holt; and three stepgreat-grandchildren, Benjamin Smith, Hannah Smith and Keegan Jones. She is also survived by a special niece, Doris Topps, as well as several other nieces and nephews.
Special appreciation is expressed to the Apex Rescue Squad, Spring Arbor of Apex, Rex Nursing Care Center of Apex and a special neighbor, Mary Hunter Schaub.
A funeral was held Sunday, Oct. 3, at Salem Baptist Church. The family received friends in the Salem Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.

Robert Sherwood Lamb
Robert S. Lamb, 49, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004 at his home in Cary after a courageous 11-year battle with melanoma. He was born Nov. 30, 1954 to James Christian Lamb III and the late Martha McGinnis Lamb of Winston-Salem.
Robert grew up in Chapel Hill before moving to Cary in 1981. A 1973 graduate of Chapel Hill High School, Robert continued his education at N.C. State University, where he received a B.S. in mechanical engineering in 1978. On Jan. 12, 1980, Robert married the former Patricia White in Winston-Salem.
In his early career, Robert spent 18 years with Carolina Power & Light (CP&L;) of Raleigh. Later, he worked as an IT manager for several small firms before joining Coventer Inc. of Cary. He was an active member of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Episcopal.
In addition to his father, Robert leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 24 years, Pattie Lamb, and their daughter, Rebecca K. Lamb, both of the home. Also surviving are his sister and brother-in-law, Pattie Lamb and John Moore of Princeton Junction, N.J.; brothers and sisters-in-law, James C. IV and Shawn Lamb of Haymarket, Va., Charles D. and Patty Lamb of Hopewell, Va., and William B. and Maria Lamb of Athens, Ohio; as well as 15 nieces and nephews and 2 great-nieces and nephews.
The family received friends Monday evening, Oct. 4, in Shepherd's Hall at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Episcopal, downtown Raleigh. The Burial Office & Eucharist was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Episcopal. The Rev. Dr. Robert C. Sawyer officiated, with the Rev. William B. Bennett Jr. and the Rev. Meta T. Ellington assisting.

Clarice Wilma Nutt Ransdell
Clarice Wilma Nutt Ransdell, 90, of Green Level Durham Road, died Friday, Oct. 1, 2004 in WakeMed Cary Hospital. Mrs. Ransdell was born March 30, 1914 in Wake County to William Fred Nutt and Gladys Carpenter. She was a housekeeper with the Governors Inn in Research Triangle Park. A funeral was held Tuesday, Oct. 5, at Good Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Bobby Weatherspoon and the Rev. Jim Boltz officiating. Burial was in Good Hope Baptist Church Cemetery.
She is survived by her granddaughters, Debbie High and husband, Freddie, and Michelle Rimmer and husband, Lindy, all of the Carpenter community; grandson, Greg Horton and wife, Diane of Chatham County; son-in-law, Wayne Horton of Carpenter; great-granddaughters, Rachel and Linsey Rimmer; sisters, Carrie Herndon of Durham and Doris Sears of Carpenter; and brother, Cliff Nutt of Durham. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Ransdell, and daughter, LaVern Horton.

Bruce Alvin Hardman
Bruce Alvin Hardman, 70, of Fuquay-Varina died Friday, Oct. 1, 2004 in Rex Hospital. He was a loving husband and father, and a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mr. Hardman was an electronics engineer with IBM.
A funeral was held Wednesday, Oct. 6, in the Apex Stake Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Burial followed in the Apex Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Gayle Whiting Hardman; three sons, Kevin Hardman and wife, Mary of Cary, Todd Hardman and wife, Alisa of Orem, Utah, and Michael Hardman and wife, Angeline of Mobile, Ala.; daughter, Wendy Hardman of Holly Springs; 11 grandchildren; and brother, Russ Hardman and wife, Eunice of Boulder City, Nev.

Alex Basala
Alex Basala, a Berwick, Pa., native, died on Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at Pleasant View Retirement Community in Manheim, Pa. He had just celebrated his 88th birthday on Sept. 16.
The son of Czechoslovakian immigrants, Alek and Helen Basala, he was a first generation American. His wife, Bessie Keller Basala, preceded him in death.
He was a member of Holy Annunciation Orthodox Church in Berwick where he served as altar boy, reader, council member and church school teacher. Alex was the former head of welding for American Car and Foundry and worked at the Berwick, Pa., Milton and St. Charles, Mo., plants. He held several patents and served as president of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Welding Society. After his retirement, he continued as a consultant.
He was also the owner of Al's Swimming Pool Center.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his children, Dianne, wife of Gary Gerlin of Manheim, Pa., Allen and his wife Joan of Cary, and Brenda, wife of Bill Spencer of Utica, N.Y. There are eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and his sisters Mary Szabo of Florida, Judy Fowller of Philadephia, Pa., Helen Tate of Oregon, Margie Johnson of Maryland, and Pauline Galanti of Berwick, Pa. Siblings John Michael, Anna Starvatow and Dorothy Zinnich preceded him in death.
The visitation begins at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Mayo Funeral Home Inc., 110 Chestnut St., Berwick, Pa., followed by a Celebration of Life at 10 a.m. with Parastas at 10:30 conducted by Father James P. Weremedic, his pastor, officiating. Interment will be in the Holy Annunciation Cemetery.
