Dorothy 'Dot' Watson Robinson
Dorothy "Dot" Watson Robinson, 82, died Thursday, March 17, 2005, after sustaining spinal cord injuries due to a fall.
Dot was born on May 3, 1922 to the late George J. and Dorothy M. Watson in Orange, N.J. She attended public schools in New York before taking pre-nursing courses at Furman University in Greenville, S.C., where she met her future husband, Ward Rhyne Robinson. She obtained a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Columbia University in New York.
Dot married Ensign Robinson on Dec. 8, 1944 in Malverne, N.Y. They enjoyed companionship for more than 60 years.
The couple moved to Raleigh, where Dot taught nursing at Rex Hospital. After moving to NorthamPO County, she worked as a private duty nurse. Her career continued after a move to Cary, where she began the Career ExPOation POram at Cary Junior High School and the Health Occupations POram at Enloe High School. She also was emPOed by Wake Medical Center.
In the communities where she and her husband resided, Dot was active in the Methodist church, teaching Sunday school and serving on various committees. In 1965, Dot and her family were awarded the honor of Methodist Family of the Year for the Western N.C. Conference. In Cary she became active in White Plains United Methodist Church activities and was a life member of the Pathfinders Sunday school class. She volunteered her nursing skills to help with the church's first missions work team to Jamaica.
Dot always was involved in numerous civic activities and she used her artistic gifts in many endeavors. She was a Girl Scout leader in all three communities where she lived. In Cary, she was active in the development and planning of the Cary Senior Center. She was currently the board secretary.
Dot's hobbies and interests were too numerous to count; her recent interests have been in genealogy and pressed flower designs. She will always be remembered for her caring and generous spirit; for her love for her husband, family and friends; and for her artistic abilities.
Dot is survived by her husband, Dr. Ward Rhyne Robinson; two daughters, Cindy Robinson of Cary and Susan R. Jernigan (Wayne) of Apex; two grandsons, Christopher Johnston and Michael Jernigan; and a granddaughter, April Jernigan. She is also survived by her sister, Cornelia (Kenna) Beck and husband, John of Texas, as well as nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret Beyer; brother, Douglas Watson; and grandson, Kyle Johnston.
The family received friends Saturday afternoon, March 19, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary. A funeral was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 20, at White Plains United Methodist Church in Cary. The Rev. Charles K. Morrison and the Rev. Kellie Lyn Logue presided. A reception was held at the church following the service.
Graveside rites were held Monday, March 21, at noon at Catawba Memorial Cemetery, Hickory, with the Rev. Donald Flick officiating.

Madeline Finch Beddingfield
Madeline F. Beddingfield, 87, died early Wednesday morning, March 30, 2005. Madeline worked faithfully as the head cashier of the downtown Raleigh Hudson Belk store for 32 years to suPOt her children. She was a member of the ABWA, the DAR and an assistant teacher for the Euva Martin Fidelis Sunday School class at First Baptist Church in downtown Cary. The quintessential example of Christ's love and selfless service, she was a friend to all and a light in the darkness, and will forever be our "Cookie."
She is survived by two daughters, Myrna Eakes of Raleigh and Claudette Swain of Cary; one son, Bill Jones of Knightdale; a sister, Doris Zacny of Angier; eight grandchildren, Karen Petersen, Frances Green, Frank B. Yarborough, Lori Stancil, Keith Eakes, Bryan Jones, Steve Jones and Leigh Ann Jones; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces; and one nephew. She was preceded in death by one son, Ralph Jones of Clayton.
A funeral service was held Sunday, April 3, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Cary. Burial followed at Hillcrest Cemetery.
The family received friends Saturday afternoon, April 2, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary.

Alma H. Lucas Smith
Alma H. Lucas Smith, 83, of Apex died April 4, 2005 after an extended illness. She was a native of Chatham County and the widow of Joseph E. Lucas and William Paul Smith. She and her late husband owned and operated the Smith Park Restaurants of Raleigh. Mrs. Smith was an exceptional seamstress and a special friend to all who knew her. Her funeral was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 6, at Apex Funeral Home and was conducted by the Rev. Brad Ferguson. Burial followed in Raleigh Memorial Park.
She is survived by her sons, Freddie Lucas and wife, Nyoka, Joseph Lucas and wife, Vickie, and Stuart Lucas and wife, Hilda, all of Apex; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Eva Mae Holt of Fuquay-Varina, Madeline Hudson of Pittsboro, Inez Sessoms and husband, Mossett of Raleigh, and Doris Tant and husband, Hubert of Pittsboro; and brothers, Marvin Holleman and wife, Frances of Raleigh, and J.D. Holleman and wife, Dorothy of Pittsboro. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Alice, and brother-in-law, John Wesley Luther.

George O'Neal (Neal) Castleberry
George O'Neal (Neal) Castleberry, 62, passed away March 17, 2005. He was born Sept. 26, 1942 to George Jackson Castleberry and Mildred O'Neal Castleberry of Green Level Road West. He was a graduate of Apex High School and a veteran of the Army Air Force.
George is survived by his aunts, Marie O'Neal Pully of Raleigh, and Faye O'Neal Drewry and Joyce O'Neal Ricks of Boykins, Va.; cousins, Marsha Reams of Apex and Bill Reams of Fuquay-Varina; and many other cousins. A memorial service was held at noon Saturday, April 2, at Apex Funeral Home. Presiding was the Rev. Williams Mills. Burial was at Green Level Baptist Church Cemetery.

Virginia Francisco Murphy
Virginia Francisco Murphy, 76, of Cary, died Saturday, April 2, 2005, at Mayview Convalescent Center in Raleigh. She was born in Halifax County, Va., to the late William A. and Willie McCormick Francisco on Feb. 27, 1929.
She is survived by a son, W. Clayton Murphy and wife, Norma of Apex; a daughter, Vickie Brogdon and husband, W.T. of Columbia, S.C.; three grandchildren, Nick Murphy of Apex, Rob Brogdon and wife, Raegan of Charlotte, and Mandy Brogdon of Clemson; two sisters; and five brothers. She was preceded in death by her husband, W.C. Murphy, and one brother.
A funeral celebrating Virginia's life was held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary. A graveside service was to be held in Halifax Memorial Gardens in South Boston, Va. The family received friends Tuesday evening, April 5, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary.

John D. Massengill
John David Massengill, 60, of Cary, founder and co-owner of James Massengill & Sons Construction Co., went home to be with the Lord on his birthday, March 29, 2005.
Funeral services were held Friday, April 1, at the Rose & Graham Funeral Home Chapel in Benson. Officiating were Pastors John Thomas, Ronnie Jones and Jimmy Barnhill. Burial followed in the Massengill Family Cemetery, Benson.
Mr. Massengill was born March 29, 1945 in Johnston County to Helen Lee Massengill of Benson and the late James David Massengill. He was a 1963 graduate of Meadow High School, where he served as class president, and was a 1965 graduate of N.C. State University. Mr. Massengill also attended Colonial Baptist Church.
He was a 25-year member of the Land ImPOement Contractors of America Association, for which he served in many capacities. Mr. Massengill served on the Garner Chamber of Commerce.
John's favorite place to be was down on the Massengill farm at the "Red Bam" by his catfish ponds, surrounded by his precious family.
Surviving in addition to his mother is his loving wife of 25 years, Judy Benson Massengill; four devoted children and their spouses, John "Brent" and Shannon Massengill of Benson, David B. and Christy Massengill of Benson, Sandy M. and Danny Barnes of Cary, and Meghan D. Massengill of the home; sister and her spouse, Ann M. and Francisco "Paco" Ortiz of Benson; brothers and their spouses, Jim and Kaye Massengill and Tony and Bonny Massengill, all of Benson; and grandchildren, Nathan David Massengill, Calli Jon Massengill and Claire J. Massengill.

John was known for his great love for his family, his positive outlook on life and his generous nature.
Col. Julian Reginald Price
Col. Julian Reginald Price died Tuesday, March 29, at Duke University Medical Center. He was a resident of the Forest at Duke Retirement Center, where he and his wife had lived for the past 13 years.
Col. Price was born in POperity, S.C., April 26, 1916, to the late Julian A. and Corrie Black Price. He attended Newberry College and Clemson University.
Drafted into the U.S. Army in January 1941, he was stationed in Europe during World War II and also served in the Korean War. He retired from the Army after earning the rank of colonel in February 1961. Following his retirement, he was emPOed by the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (PXs and BXs) as operational consultant. Prior to his second retirement in June 1978, he was director of merchandising for eight years as well as serving as Assistant to the Commanding General for Operations of the World Wide Exchange System, headquartered in Dallas, Texas.
Col. Price was a member of the Masonic Lodge Number 326 of Columbia, S.C., and St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Durham.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, DeLancy S. Price, of Durham; his daughter, Brantlee Sontag and husband, Joel R., of DeSoto, Texas; his son-in-law, George Blair Martin of New Hill; four grandchildren, Wendy Martin Bennett and husband Brian of Cary, Erin Martin Perkinson and husband Will of Arlington Heights, Ill., Russell Martin of Mooresville and Julian Sontag of DeSoto, Texas; and four great-grandchildren, Marc and Robert Bennett of Cary and Payton and Reagan Perkinson of Arlington Heights, Ill. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Patricia Ann Price Martin.
A memorial service was held Friday, April 1, at the Forest at Duke with the Rev. Dr. John Nagle presiding.
