Thurman Jackson Howell
Thurman Jackson Howell, 84, of Apex died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, at Duke University Hospital.
Mr. Howell was a native of Wake County and enjoyed being a farmer. He was a member of Salem Baptist Church, where he served in many capacities. Mr. Howell was active in Wake County Farm Bureau. He was also a member of Triangle Chapter of Antique Auto Club.
A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 20, at Salem Baptist Church. He was buried in the church cemetery beside his wife, Lucille Wilkinson Howell. Mr. Howell is survived by his sons, Kenneth W. Howell of the home, and Gary W. Howell and his fiancée, Joan Baker, of Apex; sisters, Hazel Reams of Cary and Hilda Beal and husband, Hersel, of Cary; brother, Sterling Howell of Fuquay-Varina; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, his brothers, Robert Howell, Sherwood Howell and Dalton Howell, precede Mr. Howell in death.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19, at Apex Funeral Home, 511 W. Williams St. (N.C. 55), Apex, and at other times at the home.

Susan Johannesen Cutler
Susan Johannesen Cutler, 76, of Holly Springs and Chatham, Mass., died Feb. 15, 2005, after an extended illness. Mrs. Cutler had also resided for a number of years In Duxbury, Mass. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Nathaniel R. "Rusty" Cutler Jr.
Mrs. Cutler was born in Yonkers, N.Y., the daughter of the late R. Irwin and Susan (Brown) Johannesen. She was a graduate of the Halstead School and attended Vassar College.
She was a member of the Duxbury Garden Club and the Women's Club in Holly Springs. She loved life and was happiest when with family and friends on Cape Cod.
She is survived by her children, Susan Cutler Ray and husband, Tom, of Apex and Trip Cutler and wife, Susi, of Oakland, Calif.; grandchildren, Michael, Rachel, Elizabeth and Kathryn Ray, and Josef Cutler; and brother, Richard Irwin Johannesen Jr. and wife, Marcia, of Stowe, Vt. A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 18, at Apex Funeral Home Chapel, 511 W. Williams St. (N.C. 55), Apex. Memorial services are planned for Cape Cod at a later date.

Mildred Hobgood Staton
Mildred Hobgood Staton of Cary, known to all as "Boots, " died on Feb. 15, 2005, in Raleigh surrounded by her husband and family.
She was born in 1922 in Wake Forest to the late B.H. Hobgood Sr. and Pauline Preddy Hobgood. "Boots" graduated from the Wake Forest schools and attended Peace College in Raleigh. She was employed as the executive secretary to Fred Fletcher at WRAL radio station in Raleigh during World War II while her husband was overseas. She was a homemaker and mother to her three children, was an active partner in her husband's career and traveled extensively. She and her family lived in Pennsylvania, Winston-Salem, Chicago, Hartford, Boston, Cincinnati and Birmingham. She and her husband moved to Cary in 1991, where they attended the First United Methodist Church in Cary and were members of the Ellis-Bland Sunday school class.
"Boots" was intelligent, beautiful and had a great sense of humor. Her most enduring legacy is her lifelong love for her husband of 64 years, Benjamin Sherwood Staton, of the home.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Anne Albing and husband, Brian, of Tempe, Ariz.; two sons, James S. Staton and wife, Dianne Sellers, of Raleigh and John S. Staton and wife, Carol, of Charlotte; five grandchildren, Benjamin S. Staton II of Winston-Salem, Katharine Staton of Raleigh, Margaret Anna Staton of Nashville, Tenn., and T. Marshall Staton and Molly Sarah Staton, both of Charlotte. She is also survived by three sisters, Iris Turner and husband, Hugh, of Cary, Jane Bland and husband, Bill, of Cary, and Joyce Winders and husband, Dick, of Oklahoma City, Okla.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, Feb. 19, at 2:30 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 S.E. Maynard Road in Cary. Greg Bennett officiated.
The family thanks the nursing staff at Rex Hospital, including Lota, Eurly, Katie and Ray; the nurses and staff of Hospice of Wake County, including Erin Moore, Paige Adams and Barbara Jones; Beverly Rhue of Sanford for her special assistance to the family; Liz Avery and the staff of Carolina House in Cary; the staff of Rex Convalescent Center in Apex, including Mike Kluthe, Sue Kohler and others. The family also thanks the caregivers who treated "Boots" with respect and compassion in the final month of her life, including Leigh Alstat, Janice Washington, Janet Crowder, Vicki Mativo and Carolyn Whitley.

Matthew Kurtis Di Nardo
Matthew Kurtis Di Nardo, 20, of Apex, died Feb. 13, 2005, while serving in the U.S. Army at Fort Rucker, Ala.
Matthew Kurtis Di Nardo was born on Aug. 11, 1984, in Huntington, N.Y. At the age of 4, he moved with his family to Apex, where he lived until enlisting in the U.S. Army in May 2003.
A 2002 graduate of Apex High School, Matthew's desire was to help others. Like his grandfather before him, Matthew recently completed his training as a medical laboratory specialist, attaining the rank of Specialist E-4. Stationed at Fort Rucker, Ala., he was taking college courses at night with the goal of becoming a nurse anesthetist like his father. Matthew loved music and was a huge fan of Jimi Hendrix, Green Day, the Beatles and anything punk rock. Matthew was also an avid guitar player who enjoyed playing Hendrix and Metallica.
He is survived by his father, Stephen Di Nardo; his mother, Marielyn Di Nardo; his sister, Nicole Di Nardo-Gray; his brother, Christopher Di Nardo; and his brother-in-law, Tino Gray. He is also survived by his niece and goddaughter, Hailey Di Nardo; his maternal grandmother, Mechthilde Rotteck; as well as other extended family members and a close-knit group of friends.
The family received friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 20, at Apex Funeral Home, 511 W. Williams St. (N.C. 55), Apex.
A funeral mass with military honors was held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 21, at St. Andrew The Apostle Catholic Church, 3008 Old Raleigh Road, Apex. Burial was at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Raleigh National Cemetery.
Lucy Pauline Jackson Green
Lucy Pauline Jackson Green, 86, of Cary, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005. She was a native of Jackson County, Ark. Mrs. Green was a graduate of Peabody College and Harding College. She held a graduate degree from Peabody. Mrs. Green spent 30 or more years as a college professor.
A funeral service conducted by Minister Richard Bentley will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, at Cary Church of Christ, 6640 Tryon Road, Cary. Burial will follow in the Clements Family Cemetery, N.C. 54, Morrisville.
She is survived by her husband, Richard F. Green; children, Mary Kathryn Garrett and husband, Patrick, of Cary, Paul R. Green and wife, Kim, of Indianapolis, Ind., and Ned Green and wife, Margaret, of Charlotte; grandchildren, Kathryn Garrett and Bryan Barrett; sisters, Mary Kohler, Kathryn Bata and Jatta Ellison; and many nieces and nephews.

Betty Thompson Quick
Betty Thompson Quick, 84, of Apex died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005. She was a public school teacher for more than 37 years and earned a master's degree from Duke University while teaching and raising a family.
She is survived by a son, James Quick of Inman, S.C.; three daughters, Julia and Jennifer Quick of Apex and Janet Quick of Philadelphia; a sister, Rachel Moore of Durham; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, M.A. "Swifty" Quick, in 1994.
A funeral will be held Thursday, Feb. 24, at 2 p.m. in the Apex Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Apex Cemetery. Dr. Tony Cartledge will officiate. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 23, at the Apex Funeral Home Chapel, 511 W. Williams St. (N.C. 55, Apex.

Marlene Doutt
Marlene Doutt, 67, of Tybre Downs Circle in Little River, S.C., passed away Feb. 2, 2005, following an extended illness. Ms. Doutt was a native of Russelton, Pa. She is survived by her son, Kevin Doutt of New Jersey, and a sister, Rosemary Nealer of Pennsylvania. She moved in 1986 to Cary, where she was employed by the Coastal Federal Credit Union for 15 years. After retiring in 2000, Ms. Doutt relocated to Little River, S.C., to be closer to the beach, which she enjoyed and loved so much. Ms. Doutt leaves behind many family members and friends who love and will miss her dearly. In remembrance of her and her love of the beach, a private service for family and friends will be held in Little River on a date to be determined later. Elinor Upchurch King
Elinor Upchurch King, 79, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, after a long illness. She was employed by Aeroglide Corp. for 25 years.
Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 14, in the Apex Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Fred Kemp officiating. Burial followed in the Salem Baptist Church Cemetery.
She is survived by a special niece, Barbara Kelbaugh, and husband, Sherwood, of Raleigh; four sisters, Frances U. Smith of Raleigh and Ruby Cauncil, Nellie Goodwin and husband, Lennie, and Faye U. Winstead and husband, Nicky, all of Apex; two brothers, William Upchurch and wife, Sarah, of Franklinton, and James Upchurch and wife, Shirley, of Apex; a brother-in-law, Owen Bowen of Apex; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. King was preceded in death by her husband, William Ezra King, in 2001. Her parents, Glenn and Ella Upchurch, and a sister, Katherine Bowen, also predeceased her.

Mattie Byrd Norris
Mattie Byrd Norris, 92, of Coats died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at Rex Hospital in Raleigh. Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 11, at Rose & Graham Funeral Home Chapel in Benson, with the Revs. Tony Kopanski, James Gurkins and Eddie Norris officiating. Burial followed in the Red Hill Church Cemetery. Mrs. Norris was born Dec. 8, 1912 in Harnett County to the late John William and Jennie Messer Byrd. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bryant Allen Norris; a granddaughter, Cathy Messler Owens; and sons-in-law, J. L. Pollard, G. R. Stephenson and Robert Dupree. Mrs. Norris was a homemaker and a member of the Red Hill Pentecostal Freewill Baptist Church.
Surviving are daughters and sons-in-law, Louise N. Pollard of Coats, Kathleen and C.L. Byrd of Garner, Ann and Bill Messler of Cary, Peggy Adams of Garner, Doris Dupree of Clayton, Brenda and Gale Johnson of Dunn, Helen and John Kirksey of Cary and Janet N. Stephenson of Coats; sons and daughters-in-law, Billy and Linda Norris of Coats, Jerry and Glenda Norris of Raleigh, and Mike and Kaye Norris of Coats; 21 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren, 17 great-great-grandchildren; and special caregiver, Cora Phillips.
