Broughton Howard

Broughton Howard, 94, of New Hill died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, following a long illness.

He was a lifelong member of Bells Baptist Church in Apex and had retired from Carolina Power & Light Co. (Progress Energy).

Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 10, at the Bells Baptist Church, with the Rev. Rick Washington officiating. Burial followed in the Bells Church Cemetery. The family received friends prior to the service.

Mr. Howard is survived by his wife, Lila Holt Howard, and a brother, Leonard Howard of Siler City, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Norma Harpold Kincaid

Norma Harpold Kincaid of Raleigh passed peacefully Feb. 13, 2005. Born May 16, 1929 to Benjamin and Delphia Harpold of Chester, W.Va., she was a graduate of West Virginia University and a member of the Delta Gamma sorority. Norma Jean was a teacher of English and became a lifelong reader and lover of books, especially mysteries and gardening books. Her gardening was a passion and she would spend hours reading books to pick just the right shrubs and flowers to improve her home and yard.

Surviving family members include her devoted and beloved husband, Harry Kincaid of Raleigh, and son, John Kincaid of Fuquay-Varina.

Surviving siblings include sister, Pauline Yanko of Huron, Ohio, and brother, Wayne Harpold and wife Marie of New Cumberland, W.Va. Brother Glenn Harpold preceded her in death.

Surviving nieces and nephews include Mecca Thayer and Dennis Dreier of East Liverpool, Ohio, Toni Swartling and husband Jim of Martinsville, Ind., Lucy Baker and husband Tim of Dayton, Ohio, and Jan Harpold and wife Dorie of Weirton, W.Va. She will be missed by her many grandnieces and grandnephews.

Services for family members will be held at Dawson's Funeral Home of East Liverpool, Ohio, Saturday Feb. 19.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary's St., Fourth Floor, Raleigh, NC 27605, which along with its caregivers provided loving care and comfort to Norma Jean.

David Lee Martin

David Lee Martin, 58, of Boxwood Lane in Apex died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, after an extended battle with cancer.

Mr. Martin was a loving husband, father, son, brother and friend. He was a native of Lyle, Minn. Mr. Martin worked 30 years as a technical writer at IBM and had made his home in North Carolina for the past 20 years. He was a Vietnam veteran and a member of Apex United Methodist Church.

A service was held Wednesday evening, Feb. 16, in the Apex Funeral Home Chapel. The family received friends prior to and following the service. Survivors are: his wife, Barbara H. Martin; a daughter, Jennifer Martin of Madrid, Spain; two stepdaughters, Kimberly Chisum and husband, Richard of Greenville, S.C., and Meredith Williams and husband, Ted of Angier; his mother, Larrie Montgomery and husband, Jerry of Austin, Minn., and his father, Lee Martin and wife, Colleen of Austin, Minn.; two sisters, Linda Bottema and husband, Bill of Isanti, Minn., and Marci Burton and husband, Steve of Austin, Minn.; several nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.

Memorials may be given to the Cancer Foundation at Lyle Legion Post 105, 112 Grove, Lyle, MN 55953.

Blood donations also will be greatly appreciated by the family.

A service and burial will be held in Lyle, Minn., at a later date. Apex Funeral Home handled local arrangements.

Ethel S. McIlvain

Ethel S. McIlvain of Cary died peacefully at her home Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005. She was born Sept. 11, 1917, in Belleville, N.J., to the late Margaret Hutchinson Joule and Arthur Eugene Searl. She was married to the love of her life, the late David Hart McIlvain, for 47 years.

Mrs. McIlvain was a graduate of Upsala College in East Orange, N.J., and the Berlitz School of Languages, Newark, N.J. She enjoyed a full life of travel and companionship.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan Hart McIlvain McArdle, and son-in-law, James Patrick McArdle of Cary; a grandson, Marshall Allen Humphreys of Raleigh; a granddaughter, Jennifer Dawn McArdle of Holly Springs; a grandson, Sean Patrick McArdle of Raleigh; and a great-grandson, Michael W. Bingham of Angier.

A memorial service was held Wednesday evening, Feb. 16, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary. Philip G. Dahn officiated.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Heartland Hospice, 3117 Poplarwood Court, Suite 114, Raleigh, NC 27604.

Mary Anderson 'Janie' Cline

Mrs. Mary Anderson "Janie" Cline, 65, of Washington, N.C., died Monday, Feb. 14, 2005 at Ridgewood Manor Nursing Home in Washington.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 18, at Grace Lutheran Church in Washington. Burial will follow Saturday, Feb. 19, at St. Luke Lutheran Church Cemetery in Mt. Ulla.

The family will receive friends Feb. 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hillside Funeral Service, 4500 U.S. 264 East, Washington.

Paul Kevin Jackson

Paul Kevin Jackson, 50, of Raleigh went to be with the Lord on Feb. 12, 2005. He died at home after an 18-month battle with cancer.

Paul gave his life in service to the Lord as he pastored in several churches over a 24-year span of ministry. These included Draper Baptist Church of Wellsboro, Pa., Cedar Hill Baptist Church of Cleveland, Ohio, and most recently as pastor of adult ministries at Colonial Baptist Church in Cary.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Deborah Jackson, and their four children, Jonathan, Andrew, Jennifer and Bethany Jackson; his parents, Mark and Irene Jackson of Cary; and his three sisters, Sheryl Jackson, a missionary in Bangladesh, Mrs. Laurie Rekward of Waterloo, Iowa, and Mrs. Lynne Miller of Marblehead, Ohio; as well as brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at Colonial Baptist Church, Friday, Feb. 18, 6-9 p.m. There will be a private burial service Saturday with family and out-of-town guests at Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20, at Colonial.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shepherds Seminary or to Colonial Baptist Church, designating children's college fund, 6051 Tryon Road, Cary, NC 27511.

Arrangements are by Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Cary.

Frank Stevenson Goodrum Jr.

Frank Stevenson Goodrum Jr., 78, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2005, after several years of declining health. He was born July 31, 1926 and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond, Va., in 1943. He joined the U.S. Army in 1944 and served in occupied Japan in the Counter Intelligence Corp. Mr. Goodrum attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, was a member of the ATO fraternity and graduated in 1949. He met Peggy Powers in June of 1947 and they were married March 4, 1950. Together they raised six children and now have seven grandchildren.

Mr. Goodrum worked for the N.C. Department of Revenue for 37 years, serving for part of that time as the director of the intangible tax division. He was very involved in the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 232, for more than 15 years. He was also involved in his church, Raleigh Moravian Church. After retiring in 1991 he spent many years traveling, watercolor painting and playing golf with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Margaret "Peggy" P. Goodrum of Cary; one daughter, Wrenn Goodrum and husband Robert of Bristol, R.I.; four sons, Frank S. Goodrum III of Pinehurst, James M. Goodrum of Archdale, Layne B. Goodrum of Granite Falls and Lindsay H. Goodrum of Charlotte; one brother, Charles "Skipper" P. Goodrum of Fenton, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Shannon E., Christopher S. and Adam G. Goodrum of Pinehurst, Lauren P. and Hannah L. Goodrum of Archdale, and Jessie L. and Jordan L. of Jacksonville. Mr. Goodrum was preceded in death by a daughter, Leigh Goodrum. A memorial service was held Friday, Feb. 4, at 11 a.m. at Raleigh Moravian Church. A private burial was to be held at Hillcrest Cemetery in Cary.

The family received friends at an open house Thursday evening, Feb. 3, at Woodland Terrace in Cary.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Raleigh Moravian Church College Scholarship Fund, 1816 Ridge Road, Raleigh, NC 27607.

Grace Mary Laws

Grace Mary Laws, 92, died on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, at WakeMed Cary Hospital. A native of Rochester, N.Y., she was born Feb. 22, 1912 to the late Fred and Grace Thon Bardeau. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond M. Laws.

Mrs. Laws moved to Cary in 1987 to be near her son. As a widow, Grace was very independent. She was a quiet-natured woman who kept mainly to herself. Her only son was her one true gift and blessing in life. She also enjoyed being with her grandchildren.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Fred R. and Diane M. Laws of Cary; sister, Gloria Smith of Alexandria, Minn.; six grandchildren, Cynthia, Patricia, Andrew, Anne, Jennifer and Raymond; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, at First United Methodist Church, Cary. Inurnment will follow in White Marsh Memorial Park, Ambler, Pa., at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the First UMC Stephen Ministry, 117 S. Academy St., Cary, NC 27511. Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary, is in charge of arrangements.
