Henry Nissen Jr.

1928-2005

Henry "Hank" Nissen Jr., 76, of Cary died at his home Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005. Hank was a friend to anyone with a problem to solve. He grew up in Browns Mills, N.J., during the Depression. He worked as a young boy and contributed all that he made to the household. He was raised to put the family's needs ahead of his own. He was a generous soul. As a teenager, he guarded German Naval POWs at Fort Dix and learned German. Hank joined the U.S. Navy at age 18 and served his enlistment aboard the USS Juneau II, CLAA-119, where he excelled as a radio technicians mate, achieved the rank of Petty Officer 1st Class and was appointed to Annapolis. After leaving the Navy he attended Drexel University for two years. He married his sweetheart, Clara, 53 years ago on Christmas Eve.

He was a jack of all trades and master of many. To all who knew him he was impressive by any measure. He knew his business and loved his work. He worked for IBM for 36 years and achieved great things there. He was widely respected in his field as a service planning specialist. He retired in 1989 to "smell the roses." Hank was an avid amateur (HAM) radio buff and his call letters were W4VUP.

His health began to fail and he never got to travel the world, but he was always there for his family. Now he's gone and the world has lost one of its very best. He was one of a kind. We'll miss you always, Darling, Dad, Grandfather and "Shan." We'll see you again in heaven.

He is survived by and was happily married to his wife of 53 years, Clara Lancaster Nissen, whom he called his angel. He was the beloved father of two daughters, Cathy Elaine Charters and husband Andrew, and Jeanne Anita Diaz and husband Carlos, and of a son, Robert Henry Nissen, all of Cary.
