Ileane 'Nana' Seagroves Lawrence
Ileane "Nana" Seagroves Lawrence, 89, of Laurels of Chatham Nursing Home in Pittsboro, died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2005. She is a former resident of Cary and New Hill. Mrs. Lawrence was a hard worker at home and business, supported her church and was an avid gardener and a famous cook. She was a dietitian with Occidental Life Insurance Company for 20-plus years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Linwood T. Lawrence, in 1987.
Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 28, in the Apex Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. The Rev. Billy Keith officiated with interment following in the Raleigh Memorial Gardens on U.S. 70 in Raleigh. The family received friends at the funeral home Jan. 27.
Mrs. Lawrence is survived by her daughter, Alice Jean Hickman, and husband, Mike, of Sanford; four grandchildren, Thomas Mansfield of Raleigh, Susan Wrenn and husband, Rusty, of Lillington, David Mansfield and Michael Mansfield and his wife, Ori, all of Sanford; and nine great-grandchildren.
Josephine Harris Yates
Josephine Harris Yates, 88, died on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, after a long illness.
She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. A longtime member of Olive Chapel Baptist Church, she was a loving homemaker and a caring caregiver.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 29, in the Apex Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Sam Gore officiating. Burial followed in the Olive Chapel Baptist Church cemetery. The family received friends from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service Saturday morning.
Mrs. Yates is survived by two sons, W. Oscar Yates and wife, Ester of Wake Forest and J. Vernon Yates of Pittsboro; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wray J. Yates; son, Thomas W. Yates; and grandson, W. Donald Yates.
Sherwood Hudson Howell
Sherwood Hudson Howell, 81, of Apex died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, at WakeMed Cary Hospital surrounded by his family. Mr. Howell was a native of Wake County and enjoyed a lifelong career as a farmer. He was a very active member of Salem Baptist Church, serving his Lord in many capacities. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and a good friend to all who knew him.
A funeral service was held Wednesday, Feb. 2, at Salem Baptist Church and conducted by Dr. Jeff Beckett and Jeff Olds. Burial followed in the Salem Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Howell was happily married for 60 years to and is survived by his wife, Oma Austin Howell. He is also survived by his children, Judy H. York and husband, Ron of Lancaster, S.C., Sandra H. Hitchcock and husband, Tim of Cary, Marsha H. Massey and husband, Tommy of Zebulon, and Hudson Howell and wife, Diana of Apex; grandchildren, Suzanne Wingard and husband, Tripp, Ryan York, Leslie, Benjamin and Michael Hitchcock, and Meredith and Andrew Howell; brothers, Thurman Howell of Apex and Sterling Howell of Fuquay-Varina; sisters, Hazel Reams of Cary and Hilda Beal and husband, Hersal of Cary; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Howell was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert Howell and Dalton Howell.
The family expresses its heartfelt appreciation to Jennifer Booth for her loving dedication and care given to Dad for the last three years. The family would like to thank Dr. Himanshu Parikh, Dr. Michael H. Bowman, Dr. H. Paul Singh and the staff of WakeMed Cary Hospital. The family received friends Tuesday evening, Feb. 1, at Apex Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Ethel Pauline Watts
Ethel Pauline Watts, 82, of Cary died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005. Born in Ellamore, Upshur County, W.Va., her parents were John McCord and Alice Westfall McCord. Ethel was a member of Gertrude Chapel United Methodist Church for more than 70 years. Since moving to Cary, she has attended Bridgeway Church.
A memorial service will be held at noon, Sunday, Feb. 6, at Bridgeway Church, 830 Old Apex Road, Cary.
Ethel is survived by her husband, Raymond Watts of Cary; son, Randall Watts and wife, Carol Sue, of Cary; daughter, Sherry Lowery and husband, Terry, of Morrisville; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Peggy Jankowski Papsidero
Peggy Papsidero, 69, passed away peacefully Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, at Mayview Convalescent Center in Raleigh.
A native of Long Island, N.Y., she was born Sept. 21, 1935 to the late Stephan and Mary Jankowski. Peggy is survived by her husband of 50 years, Frank "Poppi, " also of Mayview; her daughter, Cindy Cox of Cary; her son, Frank Papsidero, and daughter-in-law, Penny, of Herndon, Va.; grandchildren, Avery and Michael Cox and Will and Thomas Papsidero; sisters, Cassie Kurkowski of New York and Frances Tarantino of California; and brothers Fred Jankowski of Florida and Harvey Jankowski of New York.
Formerly of Vienna, Va., where she worked in real estate, Frank and Peggy retired to Cary, becoming Silver Distributors in Nikken Corp. They enjoyed all of the places they traveled to — along with all of the people they met.
The family expresses heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Mitchell Hardison, Boylan Medical Associates, and his family, their adopted Grandma, and Dr. Mark Graham, Cary Oncology, and his staff, especially Meaghan, for their superior care.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 3, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 S.E. Maynard Road, Cary. The funeral Mass will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 804 High House Road, Cary.

John O. Maynard
John O. Maynard, 87, of Apex died early Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, at Rex Nursing Care of Apex, after an extended illness. He was born Jan. 8, 1918, the son of Thomas Edgar and Betty Ella Blake Maynard. He had lived and worked in Wake County all his life. He served in the U.S. Army National Guard.
Upon returning to Apex, John worked for R.J. Holt Service Station, the Town of Apex in the maintenance department and W. A. Hinton & Son Hardware as manager of the farm and building supply. He also worked with N.C. Fire & Safety Equipment Co. Inc., from which he retired. He was a volunteer fireman with the Apex Volunteer Fire Department for 35 years, where he also retired. He was a lifelong member of Salem Baptist Church.
A graveside service was held with military honors in the Salem Baptist Church cemetery Friday, Jan. 21, at 11 a.m. The family received relatives and friends at their home following the service.
John is survived by his wife, Ruth Goodwin Maynard; a daughter, Mary Nell M. Trotter; and a son, Thomas E. Maynard and his wife, Annette; and a granddaughter, Emily, all of Apex. He is also survived by a sister, Gladys M. Wilkinson, also of Apex, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clyde and Edgar Maynard, and three sisters, Estelle M. Lewis, Foy Maynard and Delina Murray.
In lieu of flowers, those desiring to do so may make memorials in his name to a charity of their choice.
The family wishes to thank special friends Shirley I. Nelms, Jo Jones and Helen Bullock, who provided their loving support and help during John's time of sickness. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the administration and entire nursing staff of the Rex Healthcare Center of Apex for their loving care and concern for John during his stay at the facility. Your devotion to his care will be forever remembered.

Helen Frances Barcel
Helen Frances Barcel, 79, of Cary and formerly of Apex, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, in her home. Mrs. Barcel was born in Bronx, N.Y., and attended Cathedral High School in Manhattan.
Mrs. Barcel along with her husband, Adrian, moved in 1990 from Rockland County, N.Y., to Apex. For 20 years, she was a legal secretary in Suffern, N.Y. Mrs. Barcel was a lifelong friend of Carmel.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at St. Andrew The Apostle Catholic Church, 3008 Old Raleigh Road, Apex.
Mrs. Barcel is survived by her husband, Adrian Barcel; children, Betty Kirk and husband, Alan, Stephen Barcel, Tom Barcel and wife, Rose, all of Cary, and James Barcel and wife, Judy, of Coral Springs, Fla.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary's St., fourth floor, Raleigh, NC 27605.

Thomas Joseph Barry
Thomas Joseph Barry, 87, of Cary passed away Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, at WakeMed Cary Hospital after a courageous battle.
Mr. Barry was a long-term resident of Durham who was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was born Jan. 5, 1918, the son of the late Patrick and Margaret Barry, also of Brooklyn, N.Y. Mr. Barry was a graduate of St. Michaels High School in New York and St. Johns University of New York. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II, serving in North Africa and Italy, and was awarded a Purple Heart. He worked for Liggett & Myers in Durham for more than 30 years. He was a longtime member of Immaculate Conception Church of Durham.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dorothy Barry of Cary; son, Thomas J. Barry and wife, CarolAnn, of Charlotte; daughter, Margaret Mary McGillivray and husband, Stuart, of Tampa, Fla.; son, Robert J. Barry and wife, Elaine Buxton Barry, of Cary; and grandchildren, Matthew Christopher Barry, Megan Elizabeth Barry, Kathleen Allison Barry, Sarah Nicole Barry, Alan Thomas McGillivray, Erin Hart Barry, Laura Rosalyn Barry and Ethan Buxton Barry.
He was preceded in death by a brother, John, and three sisters, Catherine, Anne and Lorette, all of Brooklyn, N.Y.
He was an avid baseball fan and a devoted family man who loved his wife, children and grandchildren. He especially enjoyed the occasions that brought together all of his children and grandchildren. He lived his life with a strong faith in God.
A visitation was held Monday evening at Clements Funeral Home in Durham. A funeral Mass was held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church of Durham.
A memorial service was also planned for Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Woodland Terrace in Cary.
