Lewis Hamel Lawrence

Lewis Hamel Lawrence, 80, of Fuquay-Varina, the founding publisher of The Cary News, died Sunday, June 4, 2006, of a brain hemorrhage.
A native of Murfreesboro, he was the son of the late Mark L. and Lucy Carmichael Lawrence.
He was a graduate of Randolph Macon Academy and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he pursued undergraduate and graduate studies.
He served in World War II in Company K 331st Inf. 83rd Division. He fought in the Normandy campaign, Northern France, and the Ardennes and Rhineland campaigns. He received the Good Conduct Medal, the Purple Heart Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon.
Lawrence was the founder of The Garner News, The Cary News (which published its first edition on Aug. 1, 1963) and several other North Carolina weeklies and was active in their day-to-day operation until his declining health forced him to sell them in the 1970s.
He was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Raleigh and in the 1950s was a lay leader in the Episcopal Church. During that time, he served on the Advisory Board of Sewanee, known today as the University of the South. He was an avid bird watcher and spent many hours on the study of ornithology.
Fresh out of college, Lawrence was hired as the first manager of the Benson Chamber of Commerce in 1950. He did much of the planning for the Mule Day and Rodeo, held in September 1950. The chamber said that Lawrence "was a vital part of the first Mule Day and we are still riding the coattails of Lewis Lawrence."
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mitchell; a son, the Hon. Lewis Bridgers Lawrence and his wife, Jane Fox, of Portland, Ore.; and a daughter, Dr. LeeAnna Lawrence and her husband, Dr. James C. Cox Jr., of Winston-Salem.
Memorial and inurnment services will be at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 125 Hillsborough St., Raleigh, on Wednesday, June 7, at 11 a.m. Visitation will follow in the Parish Life Center.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Church of the Good Shepherd.

Cecelia Lou Tripp Bordeaux
Cecelia Lou Tripp Bordeaux of Cary and formerly of Shallotte died Friday, May 26, 2006, following a five-year battle with lung cancer.
Born May 2, 1933, in Brunswick County, she was the daughter of the late Luther Cecil and Inez Robinson Tripp.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Cary. She was a graduate of East Carolina University and attended Duke University for advanced studies. Retired as a high school business teacher, she also taught the sixth grade and at the community college level and was co-owner of Brass and Copper Polishing Works in Raleigh. Cecelia grew up in Shallotte and always enjoyed the beach.
She is survived by her husband of almost 50 years, Ken Bordeaux; one son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Teresa Bordeaux; and two grandsons, Duke Bordeaux and Brian Tripp Bordeaux, all of Cary.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother, DeWayne Tripp, M.D., and her sister, Carolyn Tripp Holt.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, May 29, from crypt side in Chapel Hill Cemetery in Shallotte, officiated by the Rev. Linwood Boyette.

Jerry Lee Knott
Jerry Lee Knott, 67, of the Carpenter community, left his home on earth to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 24, 2006.
He was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church for many years, where he served as deacon and Sunday school teacher. He retired from Capital Ford in Raleigh with 47 years of service.
A graveside service celebrating his life and homegoing will be held on Friday, May 26, at 11 a.m. in the Good Hope Baptist Church Cemetery, also in the Carpenter community. Surviving are his wife, Judy Pendergraft Knott of the home; a daughter, Phyllis Knott Dixon and her husband, Michael, of Cary; and a grandson, Daniel Dixon. Also surviving are two brothers, Bobby Knott and his wife, Linda, of Richmond, Va., and Elvin Knott of Pineville, Mo.; a sister, Frances Imogene Salotti and her husband, Joe, of Holly Springs; his mother-in-law, Inez Wilson Pendergraft of Cary; a brother-in-law, George Pendergraft and his wife, Cathy, of Cary; a sister-in-law, Georgia P. Evangelist and her husband, Bill, of Green Level; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 25, at the Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (N.C. 55), and other times at the home.

Avo W. Edwards
Mrs. Avo W. Edwards of Chazy, N.Y., and Cary passed away Friday, May 19, 2006, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh, N.Y., with her husband by her side.
She was born in Marianna, Ark., the daughter of Elbert and Gladys (Curl) Warren.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 24, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Chazy.
Interment will be at a later date in Cary.

Linda C. Brooks
Linda C. Brooks, 51, of Garner, died Thursday, May 18, 2006.
Linda was a native of Winston-Salem and the daughter of the late Jacob Cole and Vera Phillips Cole of Winston-Salem, who survives her.
She moved to and resided in Wake County since 1975. Linda was the manager of Biscuit Time Restaurant in Cary for 22 years. For the past six years she was the warehouse manager for Lynn's Hallmark in Cary.
Linda was a loving and caring wife, mother, sister and friend to many. She was loved by everyone who knew her and will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her husband of 30 years, Robert "Bobby" Brooks Jr. of the home; sons, Blue McDonald of Cary and Rob Brooks and wife, Jess, of Raleigh; daughter, Mary Brooks of Garner and her son, John Brooks, of Garner; brothers, Porter Cole and wife, Tina, of McGrady and Stevie Cole and wife, Patti, of Danbury; sisters, Cecelia Chandler and husband, Rudy, of Lexington, Susan Willis and husband, Butch, of Walnut Grove and Lisa Butcher of Harmony; in-laws, Beth and Charlie Decker of Tampa, Fla., and Kathy and John Warren of Washington, D.C.; and aunts, uncles and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family received friends Sunday evening at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, in Garner. A funeral service was held Monday in the chapel at Bryan-Lee. Burial was Tuesday at Hayes Chapel Christian Church Cemetery in Garner.
Thomas Edgar Glass III
Thomas Edgar Glass III, 48, of Durham, passed away Friday, May 19, 2006, at Duke University Medical Center.
Tommy was a graduate on Northern High School in Durham, attended Western Carolina University and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. He was a lifetime member of BASS and AID Fishermen. Tommy was employed at Sam Woods and Associates for over 18 years.
He is survived by his father, Thomas Edgar Glass Jr.; stepmother, Jean Garrett Glass of Wilkesboro; sister, Janet Glass Kiefer and husband, Mark; nieces, Joanne Jean Kiefer and Lauren Vee Kiefer of Raleigh; stepsister, Vicky Garrett Kaneklides; and stepbrother, John Keith Garrett.
His mother, Jean DeWitt Glass, preceded him in death. He was the grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Glass Sr. and Mr. and Mrs. Henry DeWitt of Apex.
A memorial service is scheduled for Tuesday, May 22, at 3 p.m. in Montlawn Memorial Park, 2911 S. Wilmington St., Raleigh.

Karen Lea Byrd
Karen Lea Byrd, daughter of Sammy and Linda Byrd, (Raleigh) passed away suddenly Thursday, Feb. 12 in Charlotte where she lived with her twin sister and best friend Kimberly.
Byrd was a 2000 graduate of Enloe High School and a 2004 magna cum laude graduate in accounting and information systems from Appalachian State University where she also earned a Masters of Science in Accounting in 2005. She was an audit in charge with Deloitte, working out of the Charlotte office. Prior to leaving for college Karen and her sister swam for the Raleigh Swimming Association for 10 years. She was a lifelong member of White Plains United Methodist Church in Cary.
In addition to her parents and twin sister, she is survived by her maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Hamlet of Durham, her Aunt Bonnie and Uncle Larry Dunn of Benson, Aunt Phyllis Collins of Benson, great Aunts Katie Sink, Virginia Williams and Lib Thomasson (all of Durham), and numerous cousins and friends.
She is preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Dorsey Hamlet from Durham and paternal grandparents, Cara Lee Byrd and Randall Byrd from Benson.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 16 at White Plains United Methodist Church.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm, Sunday, Feb. 15 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 SE Maynard Rd. Cary, NC.
