Helen M. Smart
Helen M. Smart left this world on May 1 at the age of 89 to be with the love of her life, her husband Roy. She whispered, "We have a date tonight."
Helen was born in Jersey City, N.J., lived most of her life in Franklin Lakes and Manchester, N.J., until she moved to the Carolina House of Cary in 2003.
Helen, our mother, always knew she lived a wonderful, blessed life. She adored her three daughters, Lois, Leigh and Linda, and her four grandsons, Bryan, Todd, Adam and Darren, along with the newest addition, Laurian, her granddaughter-in-law. She also never hesitated to offer generous compliments for her sons-in-law, Peter and Bruce. Although apart, Helen stayed connected to her sister, Elna in Florida.
Our mother was a role model, encourager, playmate, supporter, audience and always a good listener. She was proud of her position on Wall Street as a young gal, but we admired her spelling expertise and teased her about winning a broad jump contest. Behind her shy demeanor lurked a cute sense of humor. Her favorite color, blue, symbolized her strong, steadfast strength and courage to face all challenges with a calming depth of perception. Dad whisked her across many a dance floor. Together they heard the music, the melody of life, a life they made more wonderful for all they touched. She'll dance on in Heaven in the arms of our dad.
Helen was so like the violets she lovingly tended on the windowsill — soft like the petals, small but strong and lasting like the flowers — unique and special like the way one waters a violet.
Thank you, Mom, Sister and Grandma, for all your love and wisdom.
