Elsie Dean Olive
Elsie Dean Olive, 88, of 147 Welter Road, Lumberton, Texas, died Thursday, Feb. 23, 2006, at Person Memorial Hospital, Roxboro. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, in the Chapel of Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (N.C. 55), Apex.
Burial followed in Wake Chapel Christian Church, Fuquay-Varina. Mrs. Olive is survived by her children, Loreane Blalock and husband, Philip of Rougemont, Connie Olive and wife, Julia of Lumberton, Texas, Geneva (Jenny) Height of Raleigh, Juanita Dean of Kountze, Texas, Mary Mitchell of Willow Spring and Ronnie Olive and wife, Lois of Noel, Mo.; sisters, Alta Jacobs of Portsmouth, Va., and Josephine Ottoway of Wilmington; brothers, Ellis Dean of Wilmington, and Max Dean of Sanford. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her daughters, Lucille Smith, Peggy Tyler.
The family received friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (N.C. 55), Apex.
Carmen L. High
Carmen L. High, 80, died Feb. 23, 2006. She was born on Nov. 13, 1925, in Aibonito, Puerto Rico, to the late Francisco and Margarita Gonzales Rivera.
Surviving are her husband, Earl L. High; children, Ken High and wife, Kim of Cary and Jan Turkevich and husband, Leon of Alexandria, Va.; grandchildren, Elise and Anna High of Cary and Natalie Turkevich of Alexandria, Va.; sisters, Irma Chevalier of Boynton Beach, Fla., and Gladys Blizard of Tampa, Fla.
She will be greatly missed by her family that she enjoyed and loved so much and especially by her husband with whom she celebrated her golden wedding anniversary in July of 2004.
A funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 27, at Saint Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 804 High House Road, Cary. Interment followed at Wake Memorial Park in Cary.
The family received friends Sunday, Feb. 26, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 S.E. Maynard Road, Cary.

Catherine Elizabeth Quinn
Catherine Elizabeth Quinn died peacefully on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006. She was born in Vancouver, British Columbia and attended USC and UCLA.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Garth H. Quinn. They moved to Cary in 1970. Betty was an active member of the Raleigh Fine Arts Society, a lifetime member of the N.C. Museum of Arts, and a volunteer at Western Wake Medical Center since its opening in 1991. In addition, she enjoyed her family, her friends, reading, traveling, bridge and golf.
She is survived by her daughters Sharon Ainslie and her husband Lee S. Ainslie Jr. of Lynchburg, Va., Maureen Seymour and her husband Al T. Seymour of New Hill, and Vicki Wick and her husband Mark J. Wick of Cary; three grandsons; two granddaughters; and eight great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be given to the Quinn Family Scholarship Fund at Episcopal High School, 1200 N. Quaker Lane, Alexandria, VA 22302 and St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Cary, NC.
A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, in the Chapel at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 221 Union St., Cary, NC 27511.
Wayman Eugene Stevens
Wayman Eugene Stevens, 61, of 415 Sunset Drive in Fuquay-Varina, died peacefully Friday afternoon. He was a special brother with a host of loving friends and “extended family” at Brighton Manor. He will be missed by many.
A service celebrating his life and homegoing was held on Monday Feb. 27, at 11 a.m. in the Apex Funeral Home Chapel, 550 W. Williams St. (N.C. 55) in Apex. Burial will follow in the Apex Cemetery.
Wayman is survived by a loving sister, Velma S. McDougald and her husband Mike of Apex. Also surviving are an uncle, an aunt and several cousins.
The family received friends from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 26, at the Apex Funeral Home.
Other times, friends may call at the home of Mike and Velma McDougald, 1105 Laura Duncan Road, Apex.
Julian O. Grubbs
Julian Otis Grubbs, 89, of Cary, died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2006.
He was born in Spaulding County, Ga., on Oct. 25, 1916, the second youngest of nine children. Two sisters survive him. He graduated from the Atlanta Law School and went to work as a sales exective for Marchant calculators, later Smith Corona Marchant, retiring in 1975 as director of federal government sales in Washington, D.C. A lifelong golfer, he spent his retirement on the golf courses of Sun City Center and Daytona Beach, Fla., Boone and Pinehurst, finally settling in Cary.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Ethel Bilbro Grubbs; and a blended family of six children: Lynne Davis Peters (John) of Cary, Theodore B. Davis III (Linda) of Matthews, Dennis B. Davis of Punta Gorda, Fla., Dana Davis Bayley (William) of Raleigh, Michael Grubbs (Anne) of Bowling Green, Ky., and Mariella Grubbs Medura (Jack) of Omaha, Neb. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Way of Wake County. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

John Meares
John Meares, 94, of Cary, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005. Mr. Meares was born in Columbus County on Jan. 24, 1911, to the late Rufus and Etta Meares.
He is survived by his three children, Joyce Meares Boddie of Atlanta, Ga., Carol Meares of Cary, and John M. Meares Jr. and wife, Marguerite of Wake Forest; three grandchildren, Blaire DeSantis and husband, Mark of Atlanta, Ga., Jacque Wismer and husband, Sam of Atlanta, Ga., and John Melvin Meares III and wife Sharon of Hickory; great-grandchildren, Tony, Nick, C.J., Kenzi, Meredith, Melissa, Amanda, Jeffrey and Sarah; and one great-great-grandchild, Aedyn.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Docia; grandson, George Timothy Meares; and son-in-law, Jack Boddie.
A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, at First United Methodist Church of Cary, 117 S. Academy St., Cary. Entombment will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh.
The family received friends on Friday evening, Dec. 30, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 S.E. Maynard Road, Cary.

Wolodymyr Osyp Demchuk
Wolodymyr "Walter" Demchuck, 83, of Cary, died on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005, at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, following complications from surgery.
A native of Mszana, Ukraine, he was born on Dec. 17, 1922, to the late Osyp and Tekla Procyk Demchuk. In addition to his parents, his sisters, Nadia Gulay and Luba Mrylotzky, also preceded him in death.
Wolodymyr was the son of a school teacher. As a young man, he was a Ukrainian freedom fighter. In 1944, he was wounded in Brody, Ukraine. Following World War II, he continued to fight against Soviet occupation of his beloved Ukraine. Wolodymyr was a published author who extolled upon his wartime experiences, poetry and life.
After immigrating to the United States, he attained a baccalaureate degree in engineering from Brooklyn Polytechnic University. He spent his professional career designing bridges and highways, including the Washington, D.C., Metro system. Upon retiring, Wolodymyr moved to Cary to be close to his family. He will be immortalized in the hearts of those who loved him. They will forever remember his wonderful sense of humor and how he enjoyed love, life and laughter until his very last day. Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Tania Demchuk of the home; daughters, Luba Demchuk of Winnetka, Calif., and Tania Guy and husband, David of Cary; sister, Vera Jaworsky of Frenchtown, N.J.; and grandchildren, Stefan and Katherine Guy. Also surviving are niece, Nadia Jaworsky of Frenchtown, N.J.; nephew, Robert Gulay and wife, Luba of Sarasota, Fla.; grandnephews, Robert, Mark and Eric and their mother, Arlene Gulay; special friend, Roma Danysh of Washington, D.C.; as well as the Osadca, Jetter and Pauksis families, both in the United States and Ukraine.
A funeral mass was held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 S.E. Maynard Road, Cary. The Rev. Taras R. Lonchyna officiated. Burial will follow in Wake Memorial Park, Cary. Afterward, the family received friends and loved ones at the home of Tania and David Guy, 203 Homestead Drive, Cary, NC 27513.
The visitation was held at the funeral home Friday evening, Dec. 30, followed by a parastas service. The family received friends again Saturday morning, Dec. 31, before the service at the funeral home.

Phoebe Doyle Medlin
Mrs. Phoebe Doyle Medlin, 91, of Cary, passed away Monday, Dec. 26, 2005, at Glenaire Retirement Community.
Mrs. Medlin is the daughter of the late William Henry Doyle and Goldie Ethel Medlin. She is preceded in death by her first husband, James "Jimmy" Powers, and second husband, Roy Medlin; two brothers, John and Wilber Doyle; two sisters, Mary Estelle Doyle and Lucille Duvall; and sister-in-law, Helen Finch Doyle.
Mrs. Medlin is survived by her daughter, Sue Lewis and husband Curtis of Raleigh; brother, Conan Doyle of Raleigh; sisters, Shirley Nance of Raleigh, Ethel Watkins of Garner and Rene Poulus of Southern Shores; grandson, Scott Lewis and wife Ginger; grandchildren, Cody, Christian, Alton and Bianca; and sister-in-law, Alma Lee Doyle.
Mrs. Medlin was retired from the N.C. State Department of Agriculture and was a resident of Glenaire Retirement Community. She became an artist later in life and was known as "Fe."
Family received friends Wednesday evening at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary. Funeral Service was held Thursday, Dec. 29, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home Chapel in Cary at 2 p.m. Burial followed at Montlawn Memorial Park. The Rev. J.P. Johnson officiated the services.
