Verlon Albert "Shorty" Thornbrough
Verlon Albert "Shorty" Thornbrough, 76, of 7708 Bigelow Road, Cary, died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006, at Rex Hospital. Mr. Thornbrough served in the U.S. Army in Japan during World War II. After retiring from the U.S. Army he was employed with N.C. Department of Transportation.
Shorty and his wife, Kiyoko, owned and enjoyed their businesses for 20 years at Watson’s Flea Market and several other markets.
He is survived by his wife, Kiyoko Thornbrough; son, Floyd Thornbrough and his wife, Susan, of Angier, and daughter, Jannette Pennington of Willow Spring; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family received friends Saturday morning, Jan. 28, until service time and also following the service.
The memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, in Apex Funeral Home Chapel, 550 W. Williams St. (N.C. 55), Apex. Inurnment was at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, in Restlawn Memorial Park, 7600 ACC Blvd., Raleigh.
Josephine "Elaine" Potter
Elaine Potter, 90, of Cary died on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005, at Cary Health and Rehabilitation Center. A native of New Hampton, Iowa, she was born on Dec. 4, 1915, to the late Frank and Lulu Glass Fertig. In addition to her parents, Don Potter, her husband of 58 years, also preceded her in death.
Elaine was a member of the Cary Prime Timers for many years and attended St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
Her son, Marc R. Potter, of Cary survives.
A brief graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 30, at Raleigh Memorial Park. Inurnment will follow.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 28, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 S.E. Maynard Road, Cary.

Maggie Matthews Morgan
May 1, 1913 – Dec. 21, 2005
Maggie Matthews Morgan, loving wife, mother and grandmother went home to be with her Lord on Dec. 21, 2005.
Born and raised in Harnett County, she spent most of her adult life in Wake County. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Matthews and Roseva Faulkner; her husband, Clifford Baxter Morgan; a son, Gerald Baxter Morgan; and siblings, Alford Matthews, Dayton Matthews, Christine Stevenson, Mary Stephens and Edna Baker.
A service celebrating her life and homegoing was held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 23, in the Apex Funeral Home Chapel, 550 W. Williams St. (N.C. 55) in Apex. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Fuquay-Varina. The Morgan family received friends before the funeral service on Friday at the Apex Funeral Home.
She is survived by her children, Lina Moody of Raleigh, Wilma Honeycutt (Wallace) of Apex, Glenn Morgan (Jackie) of Zebulon, and Marshall Morgan (Ruby) of Garner; a brother, Woodrow Matthews (Helen) of Buies Creek; and a sister, Pearl Ivey of Fuquay-Varina. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and their families; Buddy Wright, Sharon Jones, Steven Moody, Jeff Johnson, Sandra Hale, Stephanie Maynard, Dennis, Rodney, and Dan Morgan, Randy Honeycutt, Tina Brickhouse, Gwen Smothers, Angie Walker, Regina Rosy, and Valorie and Julie Morgan, by 30 great-grandchildren, by one great-great- grandchild, and by numerous nieces and nephews.
"Gran-Granny" will be remembered for her love of children, gardening and sewing. The family extends a special thanks to the staff of Hillside Nursing Center in Wake Forest for their continuous care of "Gran-Granny" during the past 14 years.
Frankling David "F.D." Woodruff
F.D. Woodruff, 70, of 413 James St., Apex, died Wednesday morning, Dec. 21, 2005, at Rex Hospital. F.D. attained 22 years of service in his law enforcement career. He served on the Roanoke Rapids Police Department, the Apex Police Department and on the NCSU Campus Police Department.
A service celebrating his life and homegoing was held on Friday, Dec. 23, at 2 p.m. in the Apex Funeral Home Chapel, 550 W. Williams St. (N.C. 55) in Apex. Burial was in the Apex Cemetery The Rev. Billy Keith officiated the service.
Surviving are his wife, Pat Woodruff of the home, and a son, David Woodruff of Apex. His family received friends before the funeral service on Friday at the Apex Funeral Home.

Katharine Womble Stone
Katherine Womble Stone, 94, of 2381 Farrington Road, died Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005, at Laurels of Chatham, Pittsboro. She was a native of Chatham County. Mrs. Stone was the oldest member of Bells Baptist Church where a service was held 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 24. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The Rev. Rick Washington officiated. She was a special friend to all that knew her.
She is survived by her niece, Virginia W. Smith and husband, Paul of Washington state, Elizabeth (Lib) Mason and husband, B.L. of Apex; nephews, Tommy Womble and wife, Mary Alice of Bridgewater, Va., Gene Womble and wife, Annette of Pittsboro, Alpheus Lewter and wife, Edna of Apex, and Billy S. McCoy of Apex.
The family received friends Friday evening, Dec. 23, at Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (N.C. 55). Apex; and at all other times at the home of B.L. and Lib Mason, 1522 Farrington Road, Apex.

Arthur Craig Kugel
Arthur Craig Kugel, longstanding resident of Lexington, died at the home of his daughter in Cary on Dec. 24, 2005.
Mr. Kugel was born on April 30, 1919, in Buffalo, N.Y. He was preceded in death by his wife, Julie, and a daughter, Carol Kugel.
Surviving are a son, Lauren Craig Kugel and wife, Nancy, of Kernersville; daughters, Barbee Edge and husband, Gary, of High Point and Jacquie Holcombe and husband, Rick, of Cary. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Missy Smith, Kathy Albright, Geoff Kugel, Brooke Sink Culpepper, Jimmy Holcombe and Christen Holcombe; and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Kugel is also survived by four sisters.
Interment will be at Forest Hill Memorial Park at a private family service.

Marjorie Jean "Margo" Beck
Marjorie Jean "Margo" Beck of Morrisville died peacefully on Dec. 25, 2005, after several months of declining health. Margo was born on Sept. 30, 1919, in Sydney, Australia, to the late Norman and Edna Rudd. She came to this country following World War II, and lived in Cleveland, Ohio, for 53 years. Following the death of her husband, Paul Beck, in 2000, she moved to North Carolina, where she developed a large circle of close friends and neighbors. Margo loved people, and her passions were cooking, entertaining and traveling.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Rod and her sister, Nancy, both of Australia. She is survived by her sister, Anne Benson, of New South Wales, Australia, her son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Susan Beck, of Cary, and her daughter, Rhonda Lynne of Queensland, Australia.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, in the Chapel of Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (N.C. 55), Apex. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Stephen Frederick Buchner
Stephen Frederick Buchner, 46, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 18, 2005. He was born in Memphis, Tenn., on Aug. 6, 1959, grew up in Chattanooga, Tenn., and was a resident of Cary. He was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church. Stephen was a graduate of St. Dominic School for Boys in Memphis and the Baylor School in Chattanooga. He earned a B.S.E.E. in electrical engineering and a B.S.E.E. in computer science from Duke University in 1981, and a M.S.E.E. in electrical engineering in 1985 from Duke University. He was employed in Cary by Lord Corporation as a senior engineer in the Corporate Research and Development department for 22 years. He holds a patent through the corporation.
Stephen is survived by his wife of 21 years, Kathryn Nelson Buchner, his three children, Kristin Dorothy, Karl Frederick, and Carolyn Frances of Cary, his parents, Dr. William F. and Dorothy H. Buchner of Chattanooga, Tenn., his brother, Dr. William F. Jr. and Paula Buchner along with nephew, William F. Buchner, III and niece, Mary Elizabeth Buchner of Georgetown, Tenn., brother J. Christopher and Jeanette Buchner of Leesburg, Va., and his uncles, Dr. Edward F. and Lois Buchner of Chattanooga, Tenn., R. Dean and Addie Hartley of Mayville, MI, Larry G. and Yvonne Hartley of Woodbridge, Va., great-aunt Mary Elizabeth Nailos of Waterloo, N.Y., and many cousins. The family received friends on Thursday evening, Dec. 22, with a rosary service at 8 p.m. at Chattanooga Funeral Home-East, 404 South Moore Road, East Ridge, Tenn. A funeral mass was held on Friday, Dec. 23, at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen Catholic Church. The Revs. Gilbert Diaz, Herbert Prescott and Mike Nolan officiated. Burial followed at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Casey Marie Ferguson
Casey Marie Ferguson, 26, of Cary, beloved daughter and sister, went home to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on Friday, June 3, 2005. Casey was a graduate of Apex High School and UNC-Wilmington, class of 2001. She was a member of Colonial Baptist Church. Casey returned to Raleigh in February after living in Maui for three years. She loved being outdoors, the beach, music, reading and children. Casey never met a stranger. Her electric smile would light up the room when she entered.
Casey is survived by her parents, Mike and Jeannie Ferguson; and sisters, Jennifer Ferguson and Jessica Ferguson, all of Cary; paternal grandparents, W.J. and Marie Ferguson of Jonesborough, Tenn.; maternal grandparents, G.C. and Marie Fendley of Lilburn, Ga.; aunts and uncles, Greg and Vickie Bostic of Baton Rouge, La., Larry and Sherri Renfro of Jonesborough, Tenn., and Mark and Janet Rutherford of Duncanville, Ala.; and numerous cousins.
She was preceded in death by her aunt, Julia Fendley.
The family received friends Monday evening, June 6, at Apex Funeral Home. A celebration of her life was held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 7, at Apex Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Apex Cemetery.
