Katie Lou Sadler Macon
Katie Lou Sadler Macon, 86, of Apex, died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2006, at Rex Nursing Care of Apex. A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, in the Chapel of Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (N.C. 55), Apex. Burial followed in Montlawn Memorial Park, Raleigh.
Mrs. Macon is survived by her sons, Paul N. Macon and wife, Cheryl of Cary, Howard E. Macon of Newport, Melvin E. Macon of Cary, and Phillip R. Macon and wife, Sylvia of Raleigh; sister, Lola Goss of Rome, Ga.; brothers, John Sadler of San Francisco, Calif., and Clyde Sadler of Rome, Ga.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Macon is preceded in death by her brothers, J.W. Sadler, Curtis Sadler and Wallace Sadler. The family received friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, at Apex Funeral Home.

William Harrison Diener
William Harrison Diener, 82, of Cary, died peacefully on Feb. 16, 2006, at WakeMed Cary Hospital. His gracious presence will be greatly missed by his family who will remember him as a loving and devoted father, a great reader, a lover of classical music, and a gentle, kind and generous soul.
Bill's career took him to Brazil in 1948, where he remained until retiring in 1987 to Cary to be near his children and their families. He was a faithful member of Resurrection Lutheran Church. He spent his retirement days quietly in the company of his cat, but always enjoyed being with his family and sharing in the joys of their lives.
He is survived by his four children, Eric Diener and wife Deborah of Raleigh, Paul Diener and wife Vera of Pembroke Pines, Fla., Larry Diener and wife Karla of Apex, and Valerie Morris and husband Jeff of Memphis, Tenn. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, as well as a sister, Josephine Wasson and her husband D. DeWitt Wasson of Cornwall, Pa. His former wife, Mary McMath Diener, resides in Cary.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Joseph Sterling and Dr. Rafael Moreschi for their compassionate care of Bill and support of the family through his illness and passing.
A graveside service was held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at Raleigh Memorial Park.

James Vance Gargis
James Vance Gargis, 57, of Apex, died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006, at home.
He is survived by his wife, Gale Gargis of Garner; a daughter, Robin Hicks and husband, Robert of Garner; his mother, Mary Frances Womble of Apex; a sister, Ann Coleman of Kernersville; three grandchildren, Karen Stone, Nikki Birdsong and Carmen Hicks; and several nieces.
The family will receive friends at the Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (N.C. 55) in Apex, Wednesday, Feb. 22, from 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Feb. 23, in the Apex Funderal Home Chapel at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in the Apex Cemetery.
Dominik Adam "Don" Nemecek
Dominik Adam "Don" Nemecek of Cary died on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006, in Raleigh. He was 82 years old.
Don was born on July 28, 1923, in rural Rumanova, Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia). He came to the United States in 1929, just in time to grow up in Manhattan during the Great Depression. Always a great patriot, he served in the U.S. Army in 1945-46, where he achieved the rank of sergeant. At the urging of his collegaues, and with the benefit of the G.I. Bill, in 1947 he enrolled at St. John's University in New York, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration in June 1951. In 1952 he began a career at IBM that would span nearly 37 years, where he would specialize in communications.
In May 1963, Don married Mary Smith, who had immigrated to New York from County Kildare, Ireland just five years earlier. In July 1966 they moved from the Bronx to suburban Eastchester, N.Y., where they raised their five children and lived until moving to Cary in November 2004. Don was an active parishoner at the Immaculate Conception Church in Tuckahoe, N.Y., where he served as a lector.
He was active in the community, working tirelessly in fundraising for the United Way and volunteering on behalf of numerous charities.
As a son, brother, husband, father and grandfather, Don was the gold standard. His is survived by his beloved wife, Mary of Cary; by his daughter Paula King of Cary, her husband Simon King and children; son Philip Nemecek of Eastchester, N.Y., his wife Jennifer and children; son Michael Nemecek of Raleigh, his wife Larua and children; son David Nemecek of Orange, Conn., his wife Judy and children; and son Mark Nemecek of Eastchester, N.Y., his wife Sooyoung and their daughter. In addition to his wife, five children and nine grandchildren, Don is survived by his older brother Frank, of the Bronx, N.Y.; and by three brothers-in-law, six sisters-in-law and 25 nieces and nephews.
The family received friends 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, at Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (N.C. 55), Apex with a prayer service beginning at 7:45 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, 3008 Old Raleigh Road, Apex, NC at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22.

Ruth Goodwin Maynard
Ruth Goodwin Maynard, 80, of 205 Culvert St., Apex, died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006, at WakeMed Rehab Center in Raleigh.
She was the daughter of the late Joseph E. Goodwin and Mary Edna Bennett of New Hill.
After finishing high school, she moved from Chatham County to Apex and worked as a sales clerk at W.A. Hinton & Son Hardware Store. She met her late husband while working there. She also worked as manager of the Pope's 5 & 10 Store in downtown Apex. Mrs. Maynard operated an in-home daycare for 43 years. She influenced the lives of many children growing up in the Apex and Cary area.
She was a member of Salem Baptist Church and taught 4- and 5-year-olds in Sunday School for many years. She was also a member of the Apex Firebelles Ladies Auxiliary and gave many years of support to the Apex Volunteer Fire Department serving food at the annual barbecues and providing food for the firemen when they were out on long fire calls. Her late husband and son were very active in the department serving as volunteers.
Mrs. Maynard was a devoted and loving wife, mother and "granny." She was also a loyal friend and "mother" to many who knew and loved her.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m. at Salem Baptist Church in Apex. Doctor Jeff Beckett and Mr. Bob Post will preside. The family will receive friends Wednesday, Feb. 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (N.C. Highway 55), Apex and all other times at her Culvert Street home.
Mrs. Maynard is survived by a daughter, Mary Nell M. Trotter; a son, Thomas E. Maynard and wife, Annette; a granddaughter, Emily Maynard; a sister, Catherine G. Prince of Apex; a brother, William H. Goodwin and wife, Betty, of New Hill; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Maynard was preceded in death by her husband, John Oscar Maynard.
Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
The family would like to thank all of her family and friends who showed their support by visits, cards, flowers and gifts during her recent illness.
Neil B. Webb
Neil B. Webb of Raleigh died on Friday, Feb.17, 2006. He was born in Junta, W.Va., the older of two children, to John and Fanny Webb. Raleigh became his home, where he lived and raised his children for 40 years.
Neil is survived by his wife, Jane Little Webb; his daughter and grandchildren, Natalie, Camden and Anders of Monterey, Calif.; his daughter Virginia of Raleigh; his daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren Marjorie, Michael, Micah and Trey Laurent of Fort Collins, Colo.; his son, daughter-in-law and grandchild Jonathan, Serena and Alex of Zionsville, Ind.; his son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren Camden, Joy, Jackson and Avery of Raleigh; and his sister and brother-in-law, Nadine and Keith Pierce of Columbus, Ohio. He is also survived by his stepchildren and their families, John and Marie Little of Memphis, Tenn.; Allison, Justin, Caroline and Will Brewer of Raleigh; and Lee, Meg, Erin, Tyler and Anna Smither of Raleigh. He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Nancy, in 1998, and his wife of 11 months, Mary, in 2000.
Most important to Neil was his family and he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Neil and Nancy raised their five children in a loving home and provided numerous opportunities, which led to the children achieving personal and professional success. Neil was very proud of his children's accomplishments. After Nancy's death, Neil married Mary Smither Webb, and readily "adopted" his new family, particularly his new grandchildren. After Mary's death, Neil later married Jane Little Webb and again readily adopted his new family. Neil was fond of his grandchildren and he especially loved the happiness that the little ones brought to his life. Neil and Jane established a home in which their grandchildren always felt welcomed and loved. Neil was also devoted to his church, Highland United Methodist, and to Rotary, having been a member of the Raleigh Rotary Club for almost 25 years.
Neil was a food scientist and spent his 50-year career teaching and advising on safer and better food products. After two years as a U.S. Army signal officer, Neil pursued his master's and doctorate degrees in meat science and he then taught as an assistant professor at Michigan State University. He worked in the meat industry until 1966, when he became a professor at N.C. State University. At N.C. State, he taught and consulted on the latest meat technologies.
In 1976, he left academia and devoted his full-time efforts to his company, Webb Technical Group. With his wife Nancy as his partner, he ran their research and development and testing company for the food and environmental industries. After 25 years as the head of the company, he sold the business and pursued his professional love, consulting for food companies. In recent years, he focused on promoting food safety in the meat and packaged-ice industries. Neil was well recognized for his accomplishments and received numerous awards and recognitions, including the N.C. Governor's Award for Entrepreneurial Excellence in 1984, the Meat Processing Award from the National Live Stock and Meat Board and the American Meat Science Association in 1988, and the Signal Service Award from the American Meat Science Association in 1995.
The family received friends at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary's St. on Monday, Feb. 20, from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral service was held on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 2 p.m. at Highland United Methodist Church, 1901 Ridge Road. Burial was at Raleigh Memorial Park, 7501 Glenwood Ave., following the service, where Neil was laid to rest beside Nancy.
