Lester Louis Kilpatrick
Lester Louis Kilpatrick, 78, of Apex formerly of Bloomfield, N.J., Grifton and Aiken, S.C., died at the home of his daughter, Laura and family on Tuesday, July 17, 2007. Lester was born on July 11, 1929 to Lester Kilpatrick and Elsie Chase Kilpatrick in Jersey City, New Jersey.
He grew up in Bloomfield attending the Bloomfield Baptist Church. Later he graduated from Oklahoma A&M; and served his country in the U.S. Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in Missile Guidance School. His first two children were born at White Sands Proving Grounds, N.M. where he was an expert rifleman in the Army and given the opportunity to compete with the Olympic team.
He chose to raise his family instead of competing further and became a chemical engineer with DuPont in Kinston. While there he worked with his lab partner Lien Mow Lee to invent several patents including a polymer finisher apparatus and a heat exchanger. The work they were involved in created the polyfill fibers of the everyday pillow. At the age of 52 he moved to Aiken S.C. to branch out into the field of nuclear science for DuPont and later Westinghouse at the Savannah River Plant, S.C. Together once again, he and Lien Lee created the Precipitation-Absorption Process for the decontamination of nuclear waste supernates for a further patent. He retired with close to 50 years of chemical engineering.
Lester's hobbies included beekeeping, pottery, marksmanship, guitar, water skiing, swimming, tennis, roller skating, fencing, welding, scuba diving, camping, gardening, rock climbing, hiking, and taking long distance road trips. He kept a compass mounted in his dashboard and rarely traveled the same way twice.
He was a lifetime learner, who had a desire to be a "Jack of All Trades" and, as he would humbly add, a "Master of Nothing." Lester enjoyed a good debate and would pull your leg to get a reaction. He studied scripture, nature, sports and crafts.
Lester was a generous and loving man who cared deeply about people. He would give to anyone in need. He dealt with life's pitfalls with a steadfast belief that God would help him through.
He is survived by his four thankful daughters: Laura Lea Hales, Karen Lynn Kilpatrick, Maritha Marie Keil and Amy Susan Oliver; his sons-in-law: Craige Hales, Randy Keil, and Hanes Oliver; his sister, Maritha Ann Burmeister; nine grandchildren: Jennifer, Robin, Leslie, Lauren, Austin, Adrian and husband, Nathan, David, Christina, and Tiffany; and one great grandchild, Fiona. Lester is preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Ann Ayers and his brother Kenneth. Lester remained in contact with Kenneth's wife, Faith, and their son, Michael, and enjoyed conversations with his brother-in-law, Robert Lee Gene Ayers, on many subjects.
Lester was always curious to see what was over the next hill and not afraid to go down a muddy road.
