Elmer Benjamin Lewter
Elmer Benjamin Lewter, 94 of Durham, died May 26, 2007 at Durham Regional Hospital. Mr. Lewter was born on Nov, 2, 1912 to Harvey and Mittie Yates Lewter.
Mr. Lewter was a farmer all of his life. He was married to his devoted wife Mina for 62 years who precedes him in death. Professionally, Elmer operated a garbage service. He was best known for his farming and gardening. He farmed tobacco and chickens. His garden included collards and okra, much of which he sold to Scott's Grocery in Apex. He also helped those around him in his community and family through letting them come pick from his garden to feed their own. He often would plow the gardens of those neighbors around him, especially those who were not able to do so themselves. He was given loving care in his later years by his children and his CNA's LaToya Johnson and Melanie Crumble.
He is survived by his sons, Bobby Smith Lewter and wife, Josephine of Durham, and Jerry Benjamin Lewter and wife, Shelby of Apex; grandchildren, Michele Rene Lewter, Bobbi Jo Lewter-Mofield and husband, Scott, Michael Homer Lewter and wife, Barbara, and Poochie Benjamin Lewter and wife, Michelle. He is also survived by his sister Annis Lambert. He is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren, Nicole Glenn, Reba Richardson, Crystal Baker, Timothy Richardson, Brittany Wuori, Tyler Long, Kevin Watkins, Tanner Lewter, Patrick Long, Michael Long, Olivia Lewter, Brendan Mofield, and Christy Williams and husband, Jesse and their children, Brittney and Dustin.
Mr. Lewter leaves behind a host of friends including his longtime friends Raymond Wrenn, Rayford Murphy, and Harry Beasley.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, at Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (N.C. 55), Apex.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 30, at Apex Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Durham.

Baxter Deleno Gilliam
Baxter Deleno Gilliam, 65, of Apex, died Monday, April 30, 2007 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Gilliam was the prior owner of Triangle Auto Parts and also worked with CarQuest Auto Parts and Ready Mix Concrete. He was a 32nd-degree Mason, Masonic Lodge 584.
He is survived by his wife Emma C. Gilliam; son, Linwood Gilliam and wife, Vonda of Apex; daughter, Tonya Wanner of Beaufort; stepson, Jeffrey Casey and wife, Patricia of Apex; five grandchildren, Kaylin and Kristen Gilliam, Lana and Ryan Wanner and Justin Casey; mother, LaRue Gilliam of Apex; brother, Phillip Gilliam of Sanford; sister, Peggy Dealey and husband Bud of Wilmington.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, at Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (N.C. 55), Apex.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 3, in the Chapel of Apex Funeral Home with the Rev. Keith Vaughn officiating. Burial will follow in Salem Baptist Church Cemetery.

Nicholas Anthony Carletto
Nicholas Anthony Carletto, 19, died June 5, 2007. He was born in Danbury, Conn., on May 14, 1988 to Anthony and Gina Carletto. Nick worked hard as a paint technician and also for his dad in the family business, but most of all he will be remembered for his love of fishing and the great joy he brought to his family. He was loved by many and a good friend to all.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sister, Kristin Davis and brother-in-law, Bryan Davis of Charlotte; maternal grandmother, Pat Repola of Cary; and paternal grandparents, Nicoletta and Angelo Carletto of Wappingers Falls, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Aldo Repola.
A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 11, at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Apex. The family will receive friends Sunday, June 10, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary from 2 to 4 and 6-8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Wilfred Stauffer Buisch
Wilfred Stauffer Buisch, 501 Courthouse Drive, Morrisville, born December 1, 1915, died May 25, 2007.
Wil grew up on a farm near Lyons, N.Y. Later he worked at the U.S. Post Office. He served in the Army during World War II. After retiring from the Post Office in the 1970s, Wil and his second wife, Lucille, moved to Cape Coral, Fla. There Wil continued his enjoyment of gardening and singing in the choir at his local church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille, his brothers Paul and Arthur, and his sister, Evelyn Cleverley. He is survived by his sister, Catherine Ehman Wilkes, his son, Bill Buisch, his daughers; Lyn Schuck, Grace and her husband Jack Ardieta, Sarah and her husband Steve Brem, his stepson, Ed Bailey, and his ex-wife, Ethel Gifford. He is survived by 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews and their families. A date for a memorial service to be held at Christ Lutheran Church, Cape Coral, Florida, has not been set. Helen Katherine Quander
Helen Naomi Bailey was the only child of Garfield and Georgia Bailey, born on November 1, 1928.
She was later Christened Helen Katherine during her adolescence.
She attended Dunbar Senior High School in Washington, D.C., where she met a young and handsome Clarence Sr. who was attending school nearby at Armstrong Tech.
Helen Katherine married Clarence Claudius Quander Sr. on Sept. 13, 1949.
From this union Clarence and Helen had seven children: Clarence, Jr., Carol, Christine, Stephen, Jewell, Michael and John Timothy.
During the early years of their marriage, Helen fulfilled the multiple roles of mother and housewife as her husband pursued a military career.
A career which involved national and international travel and saw her husband rise to the officer's ranks that qualified her to enjoy membership in various exclusive clubs that many African-American women, in the 1950s, typically were not admitted.
Helen lost her husband of 20 years when he succumbed to pneumonia at Freedmans Hospital in 1969.
As a widow with seven children, Helen worked many jobs to care for and keep her family together.
She retired from the federal government in 1995 to take a long deserved rest.
She resided at 6207 Foote Street Seat Pleasant, Md., for 36 years.
In September of 2002 Helen moved to North Carolina to live with her youngest daughter, Jewell, until she left to be with the Lord.
Mrs. Quander loved the Lord and could be seen reading and meditating on God's word daily.
Mrs. Quander is survived by her seven children: Clarence, Jr., Carol, Christine, Stephen, Jewell, Michael and John Timothy.
She is also survived by 16 grandchildren: LeShaun, Darrell, Noel, Dion, Mary, Charles Jr., Terrell, Krystle Katherine, Stephen Jr., Ronnie Jr., Melonie, Valerie, Michael Jr., Jasmine, Jamaal, and Aaron; eight great-grandchildren: Phillip, Samantha, Synethia, Tashawna, Jahniece, Kimora, Elias, Aaron; one son-in-law: Charles R. Miles, one daughter-in-law: Tracey Quander, and a host of relatives and friends.
Services will be held in Washington, D.C. by Bonnette And Associates Funeral Home, 2504 28th St. N.E., Washington, DC 20018.
Samuel Guy Gregg
Samuel Guy Gregg, 93, of Newton, formerly of Hickory, died May 20, 2007, at Abernethy Laurels in Newton.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Nina Hall Gregg. Also surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law: Nina and Joe Bush of Columbia, S.C., and Frances and Bob King of Car; five grandchildren: Linda B. (and Erik) Rolf, Laurie K. (and Patrick) O’Brien, Ellen Bush, David King, and Andrew Bush; as well as eight great-grandchildren.
Mr. Gregg was born in Rock Hill, S.C., to Dr. F. W. Gregg and Colie Guy Gregg.
He graduated from the Citadel in 1935 as a third-generation cadet and a member of the Citadel Round Table.
His 40-year career at Fiber Manufacturing Company in Newton was interrupted by his service in World War II in the U.S. Army, First Division Combat Engineers Battalion.
Mr. Gregg was a dedicated member of First Presbyterian Church of Hickory, where he served as Sunday school teacher, superintendent, deacon and elder.
He and his wife enjoyed their years together at Abernethy Laurels in Newton since 1993.
Burial was held at 10 a.m. at Oakwood Cemetery in Hickory, Wednesday, May 23.
A memorial service followed at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Hickory.
The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall following the service.
