Marjorie Matthew Porter
Marjorie Matthew Porter, 91, died Oct. 3, 2007. She was born in Berkley, CA on Sept. 21, 1916 to the late Harrison and Cama Matthew.
She attended Linden Hall in Lititz, PA, Wellesley College in Wellesley, MA, and Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in Manhattan, NY. Mrs. Porter was a devoted worker for the Occoneechee Boy Scout Council for 26 years from 1957 through 1996, retiring three times and returning twice; she was well known as the scouts’ “Eagle Lady." Throughout her life, her extraordinary knitting talents provided precious gifts for family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Fred Howard Porter Jr., who died in 1990. Survivors include her children Fred Howard Porter III and his wife Mary Lou of Colorado Springs, CO, William Ralph Condit Porter of Mount Airy, MD, Pamela Porter Williford and her husband Jesse of Raleigh, and Dorothy Porter Holland of Bristow, VA; 7 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Oct. 8 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 S.E. Maynard Road, Cary. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

William Keith Winn
William Keith Winn, 56, of Apex, died Oct. 26, 2007 at Rex Hospital in Raleigh.
Winn was born in Munich, Germany on Nov. 22, 1950, son of Dorothy Winn and the late Percy Eugene Winn.
Keith is survived by his wife Robin Winn; his daughter Kelly Winn; his mother Dorothy Winn of Cary; his brother Phillip Winn of CA; his sister Margaret Grubbs and brother-in-law John Grubbs of Richmond, VA; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Jodi and Tom Panko of Richmond, VA; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Jill and John Miller of Holly Springs.
He is also survived by his aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Keith was a wonderful husband, father and friend. He particularly enjoyed entertaining his family and friends, cooking and playing golf. Before he retired,
Keith worked as a buyer and product manager for several companies.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 29 at Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (Hwy 55), Apex.
A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30 in the Chapel of Apex Funeral Home.

Leo Carson Johnson
Leo Carson Johnson, 92, Green Level Road West, died suddenly at his home on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007. Johnson was born in Wake County to Malpus Jackson and Helen Edwards Johnson on May 1, 1915. He was a farmer and also worked for Lufkin Rule Co. for 10 years. Mr. Johnson was a life long member of Green Level Baptist Church.
A funeral service was held Monday, Oct. 29 at Green Level Baptist Church conducted by Reverends Richard Leader and Keith Vaughan. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
He is survived by his daughter Linda J. Hale and her husband Steve of Lake Norman, his son Freeman Johnson and his wife Peggy of Apex, his granddaughter Stephanie Hale of Atlanta, GA, his nephew Bill Johnson and his wife Amy of Raleigh, and his niece Jenny Edwards and her husband Ralph of Franklinton.
Johnson is preceded in death in by his wife of 64 years, Ethel Dickens Johnson.
The family will receive friends in the church fellowship Hall immediately following the service.

Darlene Talbert Shaver
Darlene Talbert Shaver, 58, of Cary died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2007 at Rex Hospital in Raleigh. Shaver was a member of Ephesus Baptist Church where a funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2 conducted by Rev. Greg Templin. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Shaver is survived by her husband Donald W. Shaver with whom she shared 37 happy years of marriage. She is also survived by her son Bretton Shaver and his wife Stacy of Goldsboro, her daughter Robyn Herndon and her husband Chris of Cary, her grandchildren Gabe, Austyn, Jessica, Tyler and Becca, her sister Teresa Blalock and her husband Clyde of Aquadale, and her brother Randall Talbert of Concord. Shaver leaves behind her special pet, Daisy.
The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 pm Thursday, Nov. 1 at Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (Hwy 55), Apex.

Marilyn Rose Peterson
Marilyn Rose Peterson, 65, went home to be with her Lord on Nov. 3, 2007. She is the daughter of Lillie Truman Peterson and the late Graham Peterson.
Marilyn grew up in Wilmington and graduated from New Hanover High School. She earned degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Georgia. She enjoyed a successful career in retailing and education, retiring from Durham Technical Community College in 1993.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her brother Graham and his wife Darlyne, her brother Richard and Julia Kenney; also by nieces and nephews Brad, Patty, Julie, Kelly, Richard, and life-long friend Betsy Meldau.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 S.E. Maynard Road, Cary.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, and also immediately following the memorial service.

Estha Washam Elder
Estha Washam Elder, age 80, of 120 Brian Drive, Spartanburg, S.C., wife of 60 years of Russell B. Elder Jr., passed away on Saturday, June 30, 2007 in Spartanburg Regional Hospital.
Born in Cornelius, N.C. March 2, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Frank L. and Rena Hager Washam. Mrs. Elder was the valedictorian of her high school class and attended Queens College in Charlotte. She was in the banking profession, was a legal secretary for a local attorney and was employed with Gallagher Medical Research Services.
In Charlotte, Mrs. Elder was a longtime member and on the staff at Covenant Presbyterian Church, established a reading clinic and also volunteered for Crisis Assistance Ministries. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Spartanburg, where she served for three years as an elder including one year as Clerk of Session and was very involved with the Church Circle. Mrs. Elder was a member of the Newcomers Club, the Greenblades Garden Club, and Women in Discipleship at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church and volunteered with Meals On Wheels.
She was a kind and loving mother, wife, and grandmother who loved people, her church, her family, and was a great cook.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Elder is survived by three sons, Russell Britton Elder III of Spartanburg, S.C., Frank Stanhope Elder and wife Elizabeth Y. of Cary, and John Sherrill Elder and wife Amanda M. of North Charleston, S.C., ; three grandchildren, David Elder, Brian Elder and Jonathan Elder; a sister, Frankie Washam Lee and husband Bill M. of Charlotte; a nephew, William McConnell Lee and two nieces, Melody Lee Smith and Beverly Lee.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, July 3, 2007 at Westminster Presbyterian Church conducted by The Revs. Dr. Paul Petersen and Dr. Trey Kuhne. The family received friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.

Barbara Ann Barich
Barbara Ann Barich, 66, of Cary, died at her home on Sunday, July 8, 2007. Barbara was born in Elizabeth, N.J. on May 9, 1941 to George Uhl and Rita Gallagher.
Barbara is survived by her sisters: Dolores Mills of Cary, Cathy Koser of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Mary Birli of Cary; brother: Charles Uhl and wife Lee of Summerville, N.J.; nieces: Donna Nealis and Dolores Koser; Nephew: Kenny Koser; and a great-nephew, Edwin Nealis.
The family received friends Wednesday, July 11 at Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St., Apex.
There was a funeral service following at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Apex Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Apex Cemetery.
