For the first 18 years of his career, he served as assistant county agent or county extension chair in seven different counties, working in rural areas on organizing watersheds, farm planning, farmer education, 4-H club activities including national sheep shearing championship teams, developing the first integrated budget for the N.C. State Extension Service at the county level. In 1961, he became director of member relations for Farmers Cooperative Exchange (FCX) in Raleigh, and in 1967 he became a cooperative education specialist with U.S. Dept. of Agriculture in Washington, D.C. until his retirement in 1983.

In his position in D.C., Kirkman taught hundreds of workshops and training sessions on cooperatives across the US; developed more than 55 publications of unique educational materials on cooperatives; worked with a broad network of professionals and organizations in support of cooperatives; and was instrumental in developing public-private partnerships to document the value of cooperatives in rural and community development. National recognition of his work culminated in 1994 when a partnership of the District of Columbia, the National Cooperative Business Association and the University of the District of Columbia established at UDC the C.H. Kirkman Jr. Resource Library for Cooperatives in his honor.

Kenneth S. “Ken” Oleson

Long-time Cary resident Kenneth Smith Oleson, 82, died peacefully at home on Saturday night, October 20, 2007 after a valiant fight with cancer.

Oleson was born in Boone, Iowa, to the late Gladys and Engwal Oleson, and attended Central High School in Sioux City. A U.S. Army veteran, Oleson served his country in the Second World War and the Korean War. Following his service, he attended Morningside College and in 1950 was graduated from Iowa State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts with a B.S. in Industrial Education. In 1957, he received a Master of Science in Vocational Education from Iowa State College.

Oleson's life was shaped by his love of teaching. Early in his career he taught at the Des Moines Technical High School, and then moved on to teach at Iowa State University and Ohio State. In 1960, he and his family moved to Nigeria to help establish that country’s technical college system.

After their return to the United States in 1962, the Olesons moved to Cary and he taught at North Carolina State University before accepting a position in 1965 in the Occupational Education division of the North Carolina Community College system.

After his retirement from state government in 1985, Oleson devoted much of his time to volunteer work and his hobbies. He was a proud member of the Cary Kiwanis and Golden K, as well as the Pipe Smokers Club. He loved music and sang with the First United Methodist Church Cary choir for more than 40 years.

Ken’s hobbies included genealogy and tinkering. Ken was very proud of his Scandinavian heritage, and he delighted in corresponding with and visiting distant relatives in the United States and Norway. An inveterate coffee drinker, one of Ken’s favorite mugs had the inscription, “You can always tell a Norwegian, but you can’t tell him much.” He was also an active member of Friends of Scandinavia where he enjoyed the fellowship, holiday events and the food (even the lutefisk).

His lifetime love of tinkering started with radios and other electronic appliances and eventually moved to computers. He always seemed to have one computer that worked and at least two that were in some stage of repair. His fascination with computers led him to co-found the Cary Senior Center Computer Club, and he volunteered as a computer class coach.

Oleson is survived by his wife Gerda Pleasants Oleson; his daughter Elaine L. Oleson and her son Dylan O. Rosebrock of Cary; his brother Merle Oleson and his wife Oralee of Kansas City, MO; his sister Vivian Leckband and her husband Stanley of Arizona; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He is fondly remembered by his wife’s children, Charlott Ellington and her son Chris Cole of Knightdale; Patricia Pleasants Lawler and Paul Lawler of Wilmington; and Robert Pleasants of Carolina Beach.

In addition to his parents, Oleson was predeceased by his first wife Marjorie M. Oleson, his second wife Dorothy B. Oleson, and his brother Duane. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home on Maynard Road in Cary.

The service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church Cary on Academy Street, with burial with military honors following at Hillcrest Cemetery.

Ken Oleson's family extends their special thanks to his caregivers for their compassion and dedication: Dr. Paramjeet Singh, M.D., and the staff of the Cancer Centers of North Carolina; Thalia Ray, Alys Bates, and the nurses and therapists from Rex Home Services; caregivers Carol Judd, Cristen Trantham, Wanda Williams and Bessie Marshall; and Mary Jane Rooyakkers from Hospice of Wake County.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary’s St., Suite 400, Raleigh, NC 27605-1276, or the “Choir Fund” of the First United Methodist Church Cary, 117 S. Academy St., Cary, NC 27511.
