Barry Jackson Horton

Barry Jackson Horton, 49, of Apex passed away Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007 after a courageous battle with cancer. Barry died peacefully in the arms of his loving wife, Terri, of 28 years, with close family members by his bedside.

Horton is survived by his wife; his son Seth and his significant other Katie; his son Aaron and his fiancée Heather; his parents Ernest and Barbara Horton; his sister Angela Horton Joyner and her husband David; and his loving canine companion Buddy. He leaves behind a loving extended family; his mother-in-law Clara Davis; his brother-in-law Richard Davis and his wife Debbie; his brother-in-law Thomas Davis; his niece Alyson Joyner; his nephews Ryan Joyner, and Shea, Raney and Casey Davis; and his many aunts, uncles and cousins.

An avid outdoor sportsman, Horton loved hunting and fishing. He especially loved to spend time with his two sons and other hunting and fishing buddies enjoying his favorite hobbies. He leaves behind many fond memories of past hunting and fishing expeditions for his sons and friends to remember. His passion for the sport, gentle nature, loving spirit, and wisdom will be enormously missed by all whose lives he touched.

He was an accomplished business man who began B&T; HVAC that over the years has grown into a very successful heating and air conditioning business. He will be sadly missed by his B&T; HVAC family and business associates. The family will receive family and friends on Monday, Oct. 1, at Bells Baptist Church in Apex from 6-8 p.m. A service to celebrate his wonderful life will be held Tuesday, Oct. 2, at Bells Baptist Church at 11 a.m. The family would like to express special appreciation to Dr. William Irving and the nursing staff of 6 East at UNC Memorial Hospital for their professional and loving care, kindness and support during Barry's battle with cancer.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ducks Unlimited, One Waterfowl Way, Memphis, TN 38120, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 4330 Bland Road, Flagship Blvd., Raleigh, NC 27609 or the Bells Baptist Church Fellowship Hall Expansion Fund, 1274 Farrington Road, Apex, NC 27523.

Andrew Thomas Butler

Andrew Thomas Butler, 17, a student at Green Hope High School, died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2007. He was born July 11, 1990 in Lawrence, Mass. the son of Jeffrey and Melissa (Schaeffer) Butler.

Andrew was a talented guitarist who planned to have a rock band some day. He loved computers, video games and Radiohead. He was a very happy person who enjoyed life.

He is survived by his parents: Jeffrey Thomas Butler and Melissa Butler, of Cary; Sister: Shannon Butler, of Cary; Maternal Grandmother: Pamela and husband, Brian Schaeffer, of Inverness, FL; Paternal Grandfather: Thomas Butler, of Rochester, NY. He is also survived by his aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 12, 2007 at 4 p.m. at Apex Funeral Home Chapel, 550 W. Williams St. (Hwy 55), Apex. The family will receive friends on Monday following the service.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Martha Jean Richey

Martha Jean Rickey died on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2007 at her home. She was born Jan. 22, 1923 in South Bend, Ind. She married William Earl Hoyes Sr. on July 12, 1941. He preceded her in death.

She married Jack Edward Richey Sr. on April 24, 1976 whom also preceded her in death. Mrs. Richey is retired from the Nursing Staff of Healthwin Hospital in South Bend. She is survived by three sons: William E. Hoyes Jr. of Charleston, S.C., Fred G. Hoyes and his wife Megan, Randy G. Hoyes and his wife Carol, both of Cary. She is also survived by sister Sally Hart of Massillon, Ohio and two brothers, Glenn L. Dering of Columbus, Ohio and Wayne Dering of Canton, Ohio.

Mrs. Richey has surviving her three step children: Jack E. Richey Fr., Janell Meuleman of South Bend, Ind. and Diane Leathers of Mead, Wash.; 15 grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. Mrs. Richey was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 594, the Order of White Shrine of Jerusalem and Order of Amaranth. Cremation will take place. There will be no visitation or service.

Arnaldo “Arnie” Canelas

Arnaldo “Arnie” Canelas, 80, died Nov. 29, 2007. He was born on June 2, 1927 in Camuy, Puerto Rico to Manuel and Estilita Canelas.

Arnie completed four years of study in Civil Engineering in Puerto Rico. While he was in school, he was drafted into the Army and served during the Korean Conflict and post occupation of Germany. During that time, he suffered an injury which left him permanently disabled. Following his injury, he completed a four year degree in Spanish Literature at Marist College.

Arnie was a member of First United Methodist Church of Cary. He will be remembered as the great provider for his family, grandchildren, church and community.

Arnie is survived by his wife Carol L. Canelas, his son Jamie Allan Canelas and his wife Dorian, his grandchildren Kaitlyn May Canelas and Andrew Foster Canelas, his sister Aymee Paddock and her husband Jim, his nieces Jaymee Weinreich and Didi Spero, and his nephew Bob Paddock.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. Luis M. Canelas.

A memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2 at First United Methodist Church of Cary. The family will receive friends following the service. Inturnment will be at Fishkill Rural Cemetery in Fishkill, NY.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to First United Methodist Church of Cary to the Arnie Canelas Fund, 117 S. Academy Street, Cary, NC 27511.

Larry Gordon Goodwin

Larry Gordon Goodwin, 58, of Hillsborough, formerly of Apex, Died Nov. 27, 2007 at his home. Goodwin was a mechanic with Boats Unlimited for 22 years.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday Dec. 3 in the Olive Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends after the service.

He is survived by his daughter Lauretta Christine Goodwin and his former wife Jo Annette Cooke Goodwin of Apex. He was preceded in death by his parents Gordon Goodwin and Inez Womble Goodwin.

Wayne Wesley Thomas

Wayne Wesley Thomas, 72, of 300 Center St., Apex, died Nov. 29, 2007 in Wake Med Cary Hospital. Thomas was a retired Mathematics professor at Campbell University.

The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2, at Apex Funeral Home. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Chapel of Apex Funeral Home. Burial will follow the service.

Beverly Gail Brown Riddle

Beverly Gail Brown Riddle, 44, of Myrtle Beach, SC, and formerly of Durham, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2007 in Creedmoor.

Riddle was a well-known and loved beautician in Durham as well as Myrtle Beach. She is survived by her husband Raymond C. Riddle, her mother Priscilla Hilliard and her stepfather Hurl of Holly Springs, sister Brenda Williams and her husband Leman Weary of Garner, sister Barbara Fisher and her husband Mike of Myrtle Beach, sister Betty Barefoot and her husband Brian of Fuquay-Varina, brother Roger Brown and his wife Deborah of Fuquay-Varina, along with several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6–7 p.m. on Tuesday Dec. 11 at the Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (Hwy.55) in Apex. A service will be held in the funeral home’s chapel at 7 p.m. following the visitation. Rev. David McLaurin will officiate the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family will gratefully accept memorial contributions to offset Beverly’s funeral expenses. Memorials may be made to Apex Funeral Directors, PO Box 40, Apex, NC 27502.

Rebecca Anne Leslie

Rebecca Anne Leslie, 54, of Cary, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2007 at E . Clinton Powell Hospice in Lillington. Leslie was born in Battle Creek, Mich. on Dec. 10, 1952 to Rowland and Elizabeth Hall Elliott. She was employed with the USDA.

Leslie is survived by her husband Steve Leslie, daughter Angela Mitchell and her husband Robert of Willow Springs, daughter Amanda Leslie of the home, son Steven Leslie and his wife Penny of Lewisbury, PA, brother William Elliott, sister Carol Smith and her husband Mike of Battle Creek, Mich., and grandchildren Morgan, Dylon, Johnny and Eryn. She also leaves behind her special pets Max and Misti.

She was kind and generous. She was a great mother, wife, and friend. She was an animal lover. God carried her through her life and she was never alone. “Becky” was a good friend of Bill W’s.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the SPCA of Wake County in her name. SPCAWAKE.org.

Her family will receive friends from 2–4 p.m. on Tuesday Dec. 11 at the Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (Hwy. 55) in Apex. A mass will be held at a later date in St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church in Apex.

Vincent Mazza

Vincent Mazza, age 90, of Cary, died on Monday, Dec. 3, 2007 at his home surrounded by his family.

A native of Freeport, IL, he was born on April 1, 1917 to the late Joseph and Anna LoBianco Mazza. He grew up in Naperville, IL, where he graduated from North Central College in 1941.

In 1942, Mazza entered the Army Air Corp’s Officer’s flight training program. During his 27-year career in the Air Force, he piloted a B-24 for 30 missions over Europe during WWII. He was awarded the Silver Star and Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism on a mission over Germany. In 1949, he was the lead test pilot for ejection seat tests. He was the first man to be ejected from a jet plane flying 550 miles per hour. The following year he served as Project Officer and lead parachutist for the Air Force High Altitude Bailout tests. His freefalls were from as high as 42, 000 feet, an unofficial record at that time. He developed and tested the Life Raft Deployment System in which a life raft inflated during the parachute descent. He proved that it was possible to be in the life raft within 8 seconds.

In 1969, he retired as a Lt. Col. at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. On Veteran’s Day, 2006, he and four other Naperville servicemen from WWII were honored with the Veteran’s Valor sculpture, located in Naperville’s Central Park. Vincent enjoyed his retirement living in Hawaii.

Surviving are his daughter Lori Mazza of Arlington, VA, daughter Sherri Gibbon and her husband Steven of Cary, son Scott V. Mazza of McLean, VA; brother and sister-in-law the Reverend and Mrs. Joseph and Susan Mazza of Sturgeon Bay, WI; and grandchildren Matthew and Mackenzie Gibbon.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, 2008 at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. Guests should report to the Old Post Chapel by 10:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (www.multiplemyeloma.org); the Alzheimer’s Foundation (www.alzfdn.org); or to the Disabled American Veterans Charitable Service Trust (www.dav.org).
