Mary Belle Phillips
Mary Belle Phillips, (Mama) 100, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 12, 2008 at Rex Nursing Home of Apex. She spent more than 90 years in Cary and was one of the oldest members of First Baptist Church in Cary. She worked in retail sales for many years in downtown Raleigh and Cameron Village.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Phillips, her sister and two brothers.
Surviving are her daughter Peggy Henderson (Billy); her grandchildren, Tim, Sharon, Amy and Dave; eight great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews as well as great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family would like to thank all of her special friends who lovingly visited and helped attend to her needs. She truly will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Monday, July 14 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 SE Maynard Road, Cary. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday.
Sudie Howington Utley
Sudie Howington Utley, 97, of Spring Arbor, Apex, died on Thursday, June 19, 2008. Utley was born Oct. 22, 1910 to Thomas Jarvis and Alma Bayles Howington. She had five brothers: Woodrow, Carlyle, Tilton, Bill, and Victor. Utley worked as a healthcare technician at Dorothea Dix Hospital for more than 23 years. She was a longtime member of Pleasant Plain Baptist Church and was a Queen of the Apex Golden Age Club.
Utley is survived by her nephew Robert Howington Sr. and his wife Zelda of Sanford, her nephew Jimmy Howington of Clayton, her nephew Tommy Howington and his wife Beulah of Lillington, her nephew James P. Howington and hhis wife Genelle of Lillington, her niece Phyllis Hobgood and her husband Milton of Cary, her niece Gracie Howington of Cary, her niece Jeannie Champion of Raleigh and her niece Glenda Taylor of Mamers.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on June 23 at Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (Hwy 55), Apex; and at other times at the home of Gracie Howington, 404 Indian Elm, Cary, NC 27519.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 24 at Pleasant Plains Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Apex Cemetery.
Memorial may be given to Pleasant Plains Baptist Church, 1800 Old US 1 Hwy, Box 117, Apex, NC 27502.
Margaret Holleman Wales
Margaret Holleman Wales, 90, of 911 S. Hughes St., died Saturday March 1, 2008 at Rex Hospital in Raleigh. She was preceded in death by his brother Dan Holleman and his sister Joyce Holleman.
A service celebrating her life and home going will be held on Wednesday March 5 at 11 a.m. in the Apex Funeral Home Chapel, 550 W. Williams St., Apex, NC. Burial will be in the Holly Springs Cemetery. Rev. Joe Fiegler will conduct the services.
Surviving are sisters Agnes Smith of Holly Springs and Ozelle Langston of Cary, nieces Cindy Williford, Phyllis Love, Ann Dean, and Joyce Pittman, and nephew Craven Langston.
The family will receive friends for an hour prior to the funeral service, starting at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Those desiring to do so may make memorials to Hospice of Wake County.
Earl Reece Bailey
Earl Reece Bailey, 77, of Apex, went to be with his Lord on Monday, Feb. 4, 2008 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill. Bailey was retired from the U S Air Force. He was a member of Salem Baptist Church where a funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7.
Conducting the service will be Dr. Jeff Beckett, Bob Post, and Rev. Joe Grubbs. Burial will follow in Salem Baptist Church Cemetery with Military Honors.
Bailey is survived by his wife Roxie D. Bailey, son David R. Bailey and his wife Carla of VA, daughter Roxanne C. Fricke of Apex, daughter Tina Lee McGhee and her husband Greg of Apex, brother Paul H. Bailey of Whitesboro, TX, brother Ramel A. Bailey and his wife Betty of Nashville, TN, sister Gail Baliff and her husband Eddie of Clinton, TN, siser Betty Slagle and her husband Wayne of Salt Lake City, UT, and Brenda Day and her husband Millard of Lenoir City, TN. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and a multitude of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6 at Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (Hwy 55), Apex and at all other times at the home.

James Lewis Swain
James Lewis Swain of Cary went to be with the Lord on June 13, 2008. He was born on Aug. 8, 1920 at his homestead, outside of Apex. He was born to Joshua Lemuel and Sadie Wade Swain.
He grew up on the farm west of Apex. Swain married Ruth McFarland on Oct. 31, 1942 and she survives. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Ruby Calder of Burlington. Lewis work at Sanders Motors, Charlie Wygul Ford and at Capital Ford for a total of 50 years.
His favorite buddy was Momma Cat. He liked airplanes and race cars. He always loved to eat a pack of nabs and drink a cold Pepsi. He liked to go down to the Woodland Garden and Nursery in Cary and work with the azaleas, hostas and camellias.
He was well loved by his many friends Billy D. and Bobby Hamilton, Billy Wallace, Ernest Lumley, David Neville and many others.
Lewis was preceded in death by brother Moody T Swain, sisters Margaret Swain Newman and sister Martha Swain Pace.
Graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 16 in Brier Creek Cemetery, 7600 ACC Boulevard, Raleigh (formerly Restlawn Memorial Gardens).

Craig Lynn Veasey
Craig Lynn Veasey, 42, of 835 Foxfire Trace, died Thursday, May 22, 2008. He was born in Chatham County on March 2, 1966 to Linwood Veasey and Earline Pendergraph Veasey.
He is survived by his father Lynwood Thomas Veasey, his son Jordan Veasey of Mebane, brother Randy Thomas Veasey and his wife Barbara, brother Eddie Lynwood Veasey and his wife Julie of Cary, maternal grandparents Ernest and Velna Pendergraph, his aunt Deborah and Alvin Fuller of Pittsboro, his uncle Lee Pendergraph, his uncle Jimmy and his wife Minaree Veasey of Sanford.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 27 in the Chapel of Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (Hwy 55), Apex. Cremation rites will be observed after the funeral service.

Hubert Edwin Hatcher
Hubert Edwin Hatcher died July 10, 2008 after an extended illness which he handled with grace and courage. He was born Dec. 21, 1932 to Edwin and Mabel Hatcher who preceded him in death.
Hatcher was a graduate of N.C. State University and the UNC School of Dentistry. Two years were spent serving in the Army Dental Core, after which he thoroughly enjoyed practicing dentistry in Cary for 35 years. He often said there was never a day that he dreaded going to work. He loved his patients and they returned this love in full measure.
Hatcher had a deep and unshakable faith in his Lord and savior, Jesus Christ. He had a kind, gentle, humble spirit, but was a man of incredible strength. His steadfast faith in God and his positive, optimistic spirit were an inspiration to his family and friends. He was a faithful member of Good Hope Baptist Church where he served his savior in many capacities throughout his life. There was a special place in his heart for the “Men’s Fellowship Sunday School Class” and the “Above and Beyond Men’s Group.”
Life to him was truly an adventure meant to be lived each day to its fullest. He had a keen appreciation of nature and the beauty of God’s creation. Many of the happiest days of his life were spent fishing out of Atlantic Beach with his precious son Mike, who preceded him in death.
Survived by the family he cherished, protected, guided and held so near to his heart are his wife Peggy Ennis Hatcher, daughter Susan Hatcher of Cary, son Greg and his wife Angie of Cary, granddaughter Allison of Cary, grandson Christopher and his wife Sarah of Fuquay-Varina, brother Sid and his wife Becky, sisters-in-law Betty Hockaday and Reda Ennis, many special nephews and nieces, and his loyal, loving supportive Good Hope Baptist Church family.
A service celebrating his life and home going will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday July 12 in Good Hope Baptist Church. Rev. Keith Vaughn will conduct the service. Burial will be private, preceding the funeral service, at 10 a.m. in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at his home.
