Gideon H. Miller Jr.
The last inning of life for Gideon H. (Junior) Miller Jr. concluded on Wednesday Sept. 10 peacefully at his daughter's home in Apex. He was 81. The first born to G.H. and Thermutis Miller on March 30, 1927, Junior discovered early his lifetime love for any game played on a diamond. He played his little league innings in and around Warrenton where he graduated from John Graham High School with honors and worked the family farm.
Gid, as his hometown knew him, wanted to play the middle innings in a bigger stadium, so he moved to Raleigh where he met his wife, Vivian Frances Sullivan. The two raised four children supported by his work first at Allen's Market and finally at NC Foundation Seed Producers, Inc. where he retired as warehouse manager in 1992 with 40 years of service.
Middle inning highlights include Foil W McLaughlin NC Seedsman of the Year Award in 1992 as well as championship ball teams played on and managed: 1966-69 Wake County league champion Chestnut Hills adult baseball and 1973 NC Fast Pitch Softball state champion Embers. Having lost his wife of 49 years to cancer in the late innings, he remarried, to school classmate Katie Joyner, moved back to his hometown Warrenton where he re-discovered a love for the Lord and taught Sunday School, sang in the choir and served on numerous committees for his home church.
Whether fishing or hunting, bowling, playing rook, or on the diamond as player, manager, or highly esteemed umpire, he was always fair and competitive. Now he's gone from cheering his beloved Duke Blue Devils to cheering us on from our great cloud of witnesses. His endearing stories and great sense of humor through practical jokes will be missed by wide circles of friends and family.
He is survived by his children: daughter Cindy Buxton and husband Sam, their children Bo Buxton and wife Shawn and Laura Buxton all of Charlotte; daughter Tanya Register and husband Gary, their son Joshua Register all of Apex; daughter Janet Rhudy and husband Steve of Raleigh, their children Dan Rhudy and wife Sydney of Rhode Island, their children Robbie, Noah, and Joe, and Matt Rhudy and wife Tonia of Raleigh, their children Keennan and Felix; and son Tim Miller and wife Shearra of Kings Mountain, their children Rebekah Hopkins and husband Ben of Morrisville and Kathlene Miller of Greensboro.
