Frances Krenzler
A. funeral service for Frances Almitha Krenzler, 93, of Ashley, ND, was Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Ashley Medical Center Nursing Home, Ashley. The Rev. Jeff Giles officiated. Burial was in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley was in charge of arrangements. She died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at the Ashley Nursing Home in Ashley. Frances Almitha Krenzler, daughter of Jacob and Christina Johanna (Heahn) Krenzler was born Dec. 25, 1907, at Zeeland, ND. She grew up in Zeeland. She went to live in Delmont, SD, in order to attend Missouri Lutheran High School. She graduated from high school on May 27, 1926. She returned to Zeeland and helped on the family farm and hardware store that her father owned. She moved to Ashley when she was a young woman and worked in the Ashley Drug Store for a number of years. She worked for Montana Dakota Utilities in the Ashley office for 25 years. She continued to make Ashley her home and cared for her elderly mother until her death. In March of 1993 she entered the Ashley Nursing Home. Frances like listening to music and enjoyed writing and expressing her views. Survivors include one niece, Naomi Pratt of Sioux Falls, SD, and a very special couple, Ella and Delbert Bender of Ashley. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters. Casketbearers were her friends in attendance at the funeral. The organist was Deloris Ulmer, two special songs were sung by the Ulmer Sisters trio and a solo was sung by Deloris Ulmer.

Juliana Englehart
Juliana Engelhart, age 97, died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at the Kanabec Hospital in Mora, MN. She was born July 1, 1903, on a farm outside of Zeeland, ND, to Johannes and Fransiska (Feist) Wolf. She was married to Sylvester Engelhart Oct. 28, 1927, and together they farmed for many years. In 1965 after retiring from farming they moved to Oakes, ND, and Juliana helped in the family Dairy Queen until 1989. She moved to Mora, MN, in 1992 and lived with her daughter, Kathryn Rempfer until her death. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Sylvester; sons, Pius and Julius; brothers, Ben, Matt, Nick, Frank, John and Joe; and sisters, Kathryn and Maggie. She is survived by daughter, Kathryn Rempfer of Mora; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter, many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Zeeland with Fr. John Lewandowski officiating. Casketbearers were Jay Rasmusson, Joel Rasmusson, Rich Rasmusson, Eric Rempfer, Patricia Curtis and Robert Engelhart. Honorary casketbearers were Karen Rasmusson, Brian Rempfer, Susan Thune and Debra Vigen. Interment was in St. Andrew’s Church Cemetery. Akkerman-Ingebrand Funeral Home, Mora, was in charge of arrangements.

Milton Vossler
Milton Vossler, age 71, of Wishek, ND, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at his residence. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 2, 2001, at the Dahlstrom Funeral Home in Wishek with Reverend Donald Hansen officiating. Burial will be in St. Luke Lutheran Cemetery in Wishek later in the spring. Milton Jacob Vossler was born Dec. 13, 1929, in Zeeland, ND, the son of Jacob and Eva (Becker) Vossler. He grew up in the Zeeland area and attended school there for some time. At a young age both his parents passed away, and he and his brother moved to Wishek, ND, with their aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Christ Vossler. In March of 1951 he entered the United States Army where he served until Feb. 4, 1957, when he was honorably discharged. After his discharge, he started working for the Soo Line Railroad, where he worked for many years until his retirement. Milton loved to fish, have coffee with his friends at Weber Ford and work on his antique cars. Milton is survived by his brother, Herbert, Eureka, SD, and numerous cousins in the area. His parents preceded him in death. Funeral arrangements were by the Dahlstrom Funeral Home of Wishek.

Alvin E. Vossler
Alvin E. Vossler, age 76, of Wishek, ND, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at Med Center One in Bismarck, ND. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 26, 2001, at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Wishek with Reverend Donald Hansen officiating. Burial will be in St. Luke Lutheran Cemetery later in the spring. Funeral arrangement by Dahlstrom Funeral Home of Wishek.

Clarence Krein
Funeral services for Clarence Krein, 77, Wishek, were held Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at the United Church of Christ, Wishek, with Rev. Tammy Toepke-Floyd officiating. He died March 25 at the Wishek Home for the Aged. Clarence, the oldest of 10 children, was born May 20, 1923 at the Krein homestead, 12 miles southwest of Wishek, the son of Ferdinand and Magdalena (Vossler) Krein. Clarence married Erma I. Sayler on June 15, 1947 at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, rural Zeeland. In 1948, they moved to a farm 11 miles southwest of Wishek. They lived there until 1984, when they semi-retired. Clarence was elected to the ASCS Community Committee for District 1 in 1958. He served until 1964, when he was elected to the McIntosh County ASCS board. He served there until 1991. Clarence was a member of the Wishek Wildlife Club and a former member of the Wishek Lions Club.. He was a McIntosh County Farmers Union director for 22 years and a charter member of the Wishek Diamond Squares square dance club. He also served as a deacon at the United Church of Christ in Wishek. Survivors include his wife, Erma of Wishek; three sons, Rick (Kathy) Krein of Wishek, John Krein of Fargo and Steve (Cindy) Krein of Bismarck; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert (Germain) Krein of Coon Rapids, Minn.; and four sisters, Estella (Paul) Rudolph of Wishek, Darlene Huber of Ashley, Violett (Alden) Ruff of Bismarck and LuEtta (Duane) Brink of Rapid City, S.D. Clarence was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Connie; and his brothers, Leo, Kenneth and Roger. Burial was in the Wishek City Cemetery. Dahlstrom Funeral Home of Wishek was in charge of arrangements.

Adeline "Ada" Schaeffer
Funeral services for Adeline "Ada" Schaeffer, 90, of Ashley will be Thursday, August 9, 2001 at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Ashley. The Rev. Jeff Giles will officiate. Burial will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Ashley. Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. There will also be visitation for one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Mrs. Schaeffer died Sunday, August 5, 2001, at the Ashley Nursing Home. Adeline Bendewald, the daughter of John and Kathryn (Daschendorf) Bendewald, was born on July 24, 1911, in northeast McIntosh County, ND. She received her education in a country school near her childhood home. Ada was united in marriage to Edwin Schaeffer Oct. 6, 1935. They made their home on a farm south of Merricourt, ND. In 1948 they left the farm and moved to Ashley. Over the years Ada was employed by Swanson's Bakery, Coast-to-Coast and the Family Clothing Store, retiring in 1985. She stayed in her home until April of 1990 when she went to live at the Ashley Nursing Home. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Ashley, the church choir and the Ashley Senior Center. Survivors include one daughter, Jean (Roger) Haupt of Ashley; two grandchildren, Jody (Terry) Weszner of Bismarck and Michael (Kim) Haupt of Chandler, AZ; five great-grandchildren, Joseph, Nathan, Kaitlyn, Nicholas and Haylee; three sisters, Christina Pfeifle of Bismarck, Emily (Cyrus) Pfeifle of Ashley and Maggie (Julius) Schock of Aberdeen, SD; three brothers, John (Maggie) Bendewald, Adolph (Olivia) Bendewald and Bennie (Francis) Bendewald, all of Aberdeen, SD; two sisters-in-law, Lydia Schilling and Violet (John) Johs, both of Aberdeen, SD, and one brother-in-law, Otto Gohl of Ashley. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters, one brother and three great-grandchildren. Honorary casket bearers will be her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. Casket bearers will be Janice Eckman, Jennette Hoffman, Polli Anderson, Dennis Klipfel, Jim Schaffer and Herbert Nitschke.

Martha Kempf
Martha Kempf, 94, Lodi, CA, formerly of Ashland, OR, died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at Delta Rehabilitation and Care Center, Lodi. Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, 1 p.m., at Memory Gardens Mortuary Chapel in Medford, OR. Cryptside services followed in Memory Gardens Memorial Park, Medford. Martha Reule Kempf was born May 12, 1907, at Ashley, ND. She married Otto R. Kempf April 11, 1925 at Ashley. He died in 1994. They lived in Rogue Valley, CA, from 1944-1989 and then moved to Lodi. She was a homemaker and enjoyed playing the organ, bowling and doing crafts and quilting. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Irene and Anna Kempf and 18 brothers and sisters.

Anton Wald
Anton Wald, 84, Bismarck, died Monday, July 30, 2001, in a local hospital. Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at Church of St. Anne, Bismarck, with the Rev. Edwin Wehner officiating. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Anton was born Jan. 13, 1917, on the family farm near Venturia, ND, to Sebastian and Magdalena (Welder) Wald. He attended rural school near Venturia. On Dec. 5, 1939, he married Rose Senger at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hague, ND. They made their home on a farm near Zeeland. They retired in 1994 and moved to Bismarck. He served as a church trustee at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church and was a member of the Hague Knights of Columbus. Grateful to have shared his life are his wife, Rose; one daughter and son-in-law, Marlene and Bob Word of Kadoka, SD; four sons and daughters-in-law, Rodney and Marcella Wald of Crystal, MN, Robert and Rena Wald of St. Cloud, MN, Leon and Carol Wald of Billings, MT, and Ken and Bobi Wald of Rochester, MN; one sister, Barbara Ziegler of Bismarck; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, George, Ben and Sebastian, and four sisters, Rose Aberle, Lizzie Weigel, Phyllis Welder and Mary Wald. Arrangements were made by Eastgate Funeral Service.

Raymond Leonard Ehley
Raymond Leonard Ehley, 72, Minot, ND, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, in a Minot nursing home. Raymond was born Sept. 28, 1928, in Ashley, ND, the son of Michael and Johanna (Wagner) Ehley. He graduated from the eighth grade, then worked for one year for an area farmer. He then entered Ashley High School graduating in 1948. He taught in a one-room school house and some time attended an electrical school in Chicago. Raymond served in the United States Army during th Korean war and following his discharge returned to North Dakota. Raymond earned his teaching degree at Ellendale Teachers College. He married LoVina Glaesman Aug. 12, 1956, in Ashley. The couple lived in numerous cities in the state where Raymond taught and was administrator. The schools he served were in Zeeland, Sarles and Calvin, Carson and Lieth, and Plaza. LoVina died April 3, 1977. Raymond retired as superintendent of Plaza High School in 1984, then moved to Minot. He married Alice Kerzman June 15, 1985. They made their home in Minot. Raymond was diagnosed with Pick’s disease in 1993, and in 1995 he entered Trinity Homes, Minot, where he had resided until his death. Raymond enjoyed hiking around Lake Sakakawea and looking for antiques. Debating religious interpretations and playing pinochle with relatives were favorite pastimes. He was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Minot, and had been an active church member in all the communities in which he had lived. Left here to celebrate his resurrection are his wife, Alice, Minot; daughters, Bonita Kay (Paul) Tranby, Eagan, MN, and their children Cory and Dorisa; Michelle Rae (Jerry) Rowell, George, IA and their daughter, Johanna; Julie Ann (Greg) Chmelik, Faribault, MN, and their sons, Dalton and Tristan; stepdaughters, Vicky (Bill) Bemman, Dickinson, ND, and their children, Jennifer and Emily, and one great-grandson, Landon; Pamela (John) Sculley, Abercrombie, ND, and their children, John, Jr., and Joshua, stepson, Rick (Pamela) Kerzman, Omaha, NE, and their children, Nathan, Chayse, Kelsey and Austin; brothers and sisters, Clara (Clifford) Lautt, San Diego, CA, Alvin (Alma) Ehley and Walter (Lorraine) Ehley, all Ashley, Luella Modahl, Minneapolis, MN, Marvin (Ione) Ehley, Aberdeen, SD; a number of nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by his first wife, LoVina; one grandson, Shannon Paul Tranby; his parents, Michael and Johanna as well as two infant brothers. The funeral was held Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at 10 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Ashley, ND. Burial was in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Ashley, ND. Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, was in charge of arrangements.

Raymond W. Iszler
Funeral service for Raymond W. Iszler, 75, of Ashley was Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, at 11 a.m. at Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Ashley. The Rev Darwin Kopfmann officiated. Burial was in the Ashley City Cemetery with military graveside rites by Frank Piper American Legion Post #53. Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Iszler died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck. Raymond Wilbert Iszler, son of Gottlieb J. and Emma (Haas) Iszler was born May 4, 1925, in McIntosh County near Ashley, ND. He received his education in the Ashley and Danzig, ND, area.

Reinhold Woehl
Reinhold Woehl, 88, Wishek, ND, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, at Wishek Community Hospital, Wishek, ND. Reinhold Woehl was born Aug. 1, 1912, on the family farm 17 miles southwest of Wishek, ND, the son of Henry Woehl Sr. and Justina (Boschee) Woehl. He received his elementary education in Rosenfield School District and grew to manhood in the vicinity where he helped on the family farm. He and Ida Stern were married Nov. 10, 1935, at her parents' farm near Zeeland, ND. They made their home on a farm 18 miles southwest of Wishek from 1938 to 1956. They then moved to Tuttle, ND, where they farmed. In 1958 they moved to Bismarck. In 1960 they moved to a farm 16 miles southeast of Ashley, ND, until 1967. They returned to Bismarck and in 1971 they moved into Wishek. Following the death of his wife he had continued to reside in Wishek. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Wishek and Senior Citizens. Surviving are his children, Wesley, Bismarck, ND, Donald (Judy), Redfield, SD; Thomas (Dianna), Wishek, ND; Gladys (Earl) Schneider, Ashley; Judie (Gary) Benjamin, Thompson, ND; 16 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, two brothers and two sisters, Otto Woehl, Wishek, Albert Woehl, Bismarck, Leah (Johnny) Lindenman, Billings, MT, Alma (Sebastian) Engelhard, Aberdeen, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one son, Victor, one granddaughter, four brothers and one sister. Funeral service was at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, in the Zion United Methodist Church in Wishek with Rev. Marty Toepke-Floyd officiating. Interment was in the Wishek City Cemetery in Wishek. Arrangements were by the Haut Funeral Homes in Wishek.

Hulda Oster
Funeral service for Hulda Viola Oster, 78, of Eureka, was Wednesday, August 29, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Eureka. The Rev Dean Nelson officiated. Burial was in Zion Lutheran Cemetery at Eureka. Carlsen Funeral Home of Eureka was in charge of arrangements. She died Sunday, August 26, 2001, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen, SD. Hulda Viola Wolff, daughter of John G. and Christina (Reich) Wolff was born Feb. 15, 1923, near Ashley, ND. She attended rural school in the Long Lake, SD area. After school, she worked for several area farmers and later at a mercantile store and cafe in Leola, SD. She also did substitute teaching in country schools in the Leola area. She was united in marriage to Albert Oster June 2, 1946, in Zion Lutheran Church at Eureka. They made their home on the Oster family farm on the west edge of Eureka. They raised small grains and livestock. She loved farm life and working in the fields and with livestock. She overcame roadblocks in her life, living with blindness and diabetes. She enjoyed sewing, embroidering, gardening and hunting pheasants, ducks and fishing. She had a wonderful sense of humor and was an excellent cook. She and her husband enjoyed traveling, and family time was always very precious to her. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Eureka and Zion Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Survivors include her husband of Eureka, twin daughters, Joyce (Lynn) Burke of Emmetsburg, IA and Joan Oster of Duluth, MN, one son, Lee Dale Oster of Eureka, one brother, John G. Wolff, Jr. of Tabor, SD, one sister, Ann M. (Norman) Paul of Huron, SD, and two grandchildren, Troy Burke and Traci Burke. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Esther Wolff in infancy and Irene Bosanko and two brothers, Elmer Wolff and Leonard Wolff. Honorary casketbearers were her grandchildren, Troy Burke and Traci Burke and all of her friends. Casketbearers were Richard Wolff of Leola, Bradley Paul of Cresbard, SD, Gary Bosanko of Ipswich and Henry Oster, Elial Harr and Ervin Beck, all of Eureka. The pianist was Selma Lapp, and there was a duet by Ronda and Barry Lapp.

Gotthilf “Curley” Maier
Gotthilf “Curley” Maier, 90, Jamestown, ND, died Thursday, August 23, 2001, at Central Dakota Village, Jamestown. Curley was born May 4, 1911, near Eureka, SD, the son of Jacob and Margaret (Lindeman) Maier. He grew up and received his education in Eureka. Curley married Rebecca Bollinger Sept. 19, 1933, in Aberdeen, SD. He began his truck driving career with Eureka Grocery Company. Curley entered the U.S. Army Jan. 4, 1944, in Oakes, ND, and was stationed at Fort Bellview, VA. He was discharged May 19, 1946, at Fort Lewis, WA. After the war he worked for Swanson Bus Line of Aberdeen. They moved to Bremerton, WA, and he drove for a naval shipyard for two years. Then they returned to North Dakota. He started Maier Coach Lines in 1954 and drove a daily route, serving Minot, ND, and a nationwide charter service. Maier Coach Lines was later named JB Shortway Charter Service Inc. which he and his son-in-law, Elroy Kleinknecht operated. Rebecca passed away Nov. 10, 1977. Curley married Martha Stroh April 9, 1978, north of Jamestown. He enjoyed traveling, music, farming, mechanics and family occasions. He was a member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion of Jamestown. He is survived by his wife, Martha, of Jamestown, one daughter Jeannie Kleinknecht, of Fargo, ND, a granddaughter, Terrica Kleinknecht of Portland, OR, one brother, Alfred (Eileen) Maier of Kerrville, TX, a sister, Hildegarde (Raymond) Baumann of Ashley, two stepsons, Fred (Carol) Opp of Gwinner, ND, Robert (Fern) Opp, of Elk Grove, CA and five step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Rebecca, five brothers, John, Joe, Emmanual, Jacob and Bernard, two sisters, Frieda and Emma and a son-in-law, Elroy Kleinknecht. Funeral service was Tuesday, August 28, 2001, 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Jamestown with Rev Norman Winkelman officiating. Burial was in Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown.

James A. Pfeifle
James A. Pfeifle, Mason, MI, was born Sept. 28, 1945, in Ashley, ND, the son of Guenthner and Hulda (Miller) Pfeifle. He died Saturday, August 18, 2001, in Lansing, MI, at age 55. Mr. Pfeifle was employed at Bernath Coakley Associates as an architect. He was preceded in death by his father Guenthner. Surviving are his mother, Hulda, and brother, Jeffrey, both of Mason, his aunt and uncle, Elmer and Gladys Bauer of Lansing, and numerous other aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 22, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Palmer Bush Lansing Chapel with the Rev. Bill Barber of Grace Bible Church officiating. Interment followed at Easttown Memory Gardens. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
