Norman Johnson, 86
Norman Johnson, 86, Hankinson, N.D., died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008, at St. Gerard's Community Nursing Home, Hankinson.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23 at the Frank Family Funeral Home, Hankinson.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Military graveside rites by the Hankinson American Legion Eberhard Post #88 at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, rural Hankinson.
Frank Family Funeral Home, Hankinson, is in charge of the arrangements.
Mary Elizabeth Exner, 91
Mary Elizabeth Exner, 91, Jamestown, N.D., died Friday, Dec. 19, 2008, in her home, surrounded by her family and with the support of Jamestown Hospice.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008 in St. James Basilica. A prayer service for family and friends will be held on Monday, Dec. 22, 2008 in St. James Basilica.
Visitation will be at Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, from 9 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, and one hour prior to services in the church on Tuesday. Interment
will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Mary Elizabeth Donegan was born on August 19, 1917 in Plankinton, S.D., the eldest child of James and Marie (Dunn) Donegan. She began her education in the Plankinton schools before moving with her family to Edgeley in 1932 where her family farmed. Her marriage to James John Exner took place on Nov. 18, 1937, in the Church of the Transfiguration at Edgeley and they resided there until moving to Bismarck in 1938. Mary and Jim moved to Jamestown in 1943 where they made their home and raised their family.
Mary was a devoted wife and mother of nine children, eight of whom survive her. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church, St James Tabernacle Society, of which she was president repeatedly over a number of years, as well as the Immaculate Conception Circle, Church Women United and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen Auxiliary. Mary was also a charter board member of FACE at St. John’s Academy, a parent and supporter of students at St. John’s Academy since 1946, and a member of the Jamestown Hospital Auxiliary.
After raising her family, she felt privileged to take on the task as housekeeper at St. James Rectory from 1978 to 1995.
Mary is survived by her five daughters and three sons, Sharon M. Gerhart, Cedar Ridge, Calif., James P. (Carolyn) Exner, Jamestown, N.D., Marlene A. Rose, Littleton, Colo., Robert J. (Bonnie) Exner, Houston, Texas, Mary Jean (Michael) McCartney, Breckenridge, Minn., Joseph R. (Claire) Exner, Morris, Minn., Joan E. Exner, Jamestown, N.D. and Margaret R. (Dennis) Exner-Wieszcholek, Littleton, Colo.
Mary is also survived by her 21 grandchildren: Michael (Valencia) Gerhart, Laura Gerhart, Steven Gerhart, David (Jana) Exner, James M. Exner, Mary Jo Gerber, Beth (Trent) Woolford, Susan (Michael) Lucy, Jonathan Rose, Shawn Exner, Molly (David) McCartney-Jeffries, Thomas McCartney, Maureen (Jesse) Tischer, Janson (Cory) Exner-Borgen, Johnny Exner, Abby Exner, Caitlin Coghlan, Phillip Coghlan, Patrick Coghlan, Renee Wieszcholek and Tessa Wieszcholek; her 15 great grandchildren: Tyrel and Katie Exner, Seth, Sawyer and Spencer Suko and Josie Gerber, Kajsa and Dallin Woolford, Jackson and Cole Lucy, Francis and Maire Eva McCartney-Jeffries, Andrew and William Tischer, and Taylor Borgen; her three brothers and two sisters, Francis J. (Rita) Donegan, Jamestown, Robert A. (Audrey) Donegan, Jamestown, Patricia (Donald) McCommon, Jamestown, Priscilla Gilman, Auburn, Wash., Victor Donegan, Pueblo, Colo., her sister-in-law, Delores (Bud) Donegan-Noecker; her brother-in-law, Leonard Richards, Kent, Wash., and sister-in-law, Margaret Exner, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
Numerous friends and relatives, including special friend, Jane Cross-Cella, Eden Park, Minn., also survive Mary.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, James J. Exner; son, Jerome D. Exner; parents, James M and Marie Donegan; two brothers, James W. Donegan and Donald R. Donegan; and two sisters, Dorothy Donegan and Janice Richards.
Arrangements were made by the Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown.
LaVerne Olson, 93
LaVerne Olson, 93, Wahpeton, N.D., formerly Wyndmere, died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008, at the St. Catherine’s Living Center, Wahpeton.
The funeral service will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 20 at Wyndmere Lutheran Church, Wyndmere, with the Rev. Marvin Schoenfish officiating.
There will be visitation one hour before the service at the church on Saturday.
Burial will be at Elk Creek Cemetery, Wyndmere, with Military Honors by the Wyndmere American Legion Brown-Nelson Post No. 153 and “Sons of American Legion."
LaVerne Kermit Olson was born on Aug. 12, 1915, at Homestead Township, rural Wyndmere, to Gust and Emma (Cornelius) Olson. He attended grade school in Homestead Township and graduated from Wyndmere High School in 1934. He worked in a violin factory in St. Charles, Ill., returning to Wyndmere in 1938 to farm with his brothers. He and his brother Leslie also worked for three summers at Yellowstone National Park. In February 1942, during WWII, he was drafted in the United States Air Corps and served as a mechanic. After training at Camp Atterbury, Ind., he was sent to England, France and Germany. After 44 months of service in the Army he was discharged. LaVerne received five battle stars and a meritorious plaque during his service. LaVerne married
Ethel Anderson, a former Homestead girl, in St. Charles, on Jan. 27, 1953. They made their home on the family farm in rural Wyndmere. The couple wintered in Mesa, Ariz., for several years until Ethel died in Mesa on March 18, 1995. LaVerne moved to the Leach Home, Wahpeton, in 2002 and in 2005, the St. Catherine’s Living Center, Wahpeton.
LaVerne was a member of the Wyndmere Lutheran Church, American Legion of Wyndmere and he served on the Richland County Water Management Board for 18 years.
He is survived by: his brother, Milo (Louise) Olson, Wyndmere; a sister, Lorraine Krogness, Brownsville, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; his wife, Ethel; two brothers, Gordon and Leslie Olson; and a sister, Norma Pearce.
Memorials may be given to Elk Creek Cemetery, Wyndmere.

Jack A. Griffin, 88
Jack A. Griffin, 88, Fargo, N.D., formerly of Wahpeton, N.D., and rural Wyndmere, N.D., died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
The funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 27, at Peace Lutheran Church, Barney, N.D.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service Friday, Dec. 26 at Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, and one hour before the service at the church on Saturday.
Burial will be at Peace Lutheran Cemetery, Barney.
Lorraine Mary Mauer, 86
Lorraine Mary Mauer, 86, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, at St. Croix Regional Medical Center in St. Croix Falls, Wis.
Lorraine was born Aug. 17, 1921, in Wahpeton, N.D., the daughter of William and Rose (Heine) Matheson. She grew up in Wahpeton where she was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Lorraine graduated from Breckenridge High School in 1939. She went on to attend the State School of Science in Wahpeton. On Oct. 16, 1946, she was united in marriage to James Kosek and they made their home in Wahpeton where their three children were born.
On Dec. 27, 1980, she married
Eugene Mauer in St. Paul, Minn. They moved to Bone Lake in 1984. Lorraine served as the town clerk for Georgetown for six years. She enjoyed bowling, flower gardening, knitting and crocheting as well as reading.
She is survived by: her husband Gene; daughters, Jeanne (Virgil) DeVine and Carol (Ken) Luebke; son, Bill (Sara) Kosek; sisters, Baris (Lynal) Oscarson and Darlene Leland; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by: her parents.
Ruth Smith, 88
Ruth Smith, 88, Aberdeen, S.D., died Sunday, March 8, 2009, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor.
Services will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, March 12, at First United Methodist Church, the Rev. Eldon Reich officiating.
Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m., Wednesday, March 11 with a prayer service at 7 p.m., Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home.
Burial will be at Wayside Cemetery, Frederick at a later date.
Ruth Elizabeth Haug was born Jan. 4, 1921, to Krist and Amy (Johnson) Haug at Frederick. Ruth had a twin brother, Ralph Haug. They lived on a farm and attended country grade school. They moved to Frederick and ran Haug’s Café for a number of years. After graduating from Frederick High School in 1939, she attended Aberdeen Business College. She worked for Anderson Supply and later became a bookkeeper at Paisley Auto Supply. Ruth was secretary for Aberdeen Credit Bureau and a member of Credit Women Breakfast Club.
On Jan. 7, 1953, she married
Allan Smith at Aberdeen. They moved to Frederick and she adopted Allan’s children and had a son, Randy, who was born in 1955. Allan’s first wife, Marian, was killed in a car accident. Allan had the Brown County Newspaper, and later started the Hecla Independent, so life was very active and busy.
After Allan died, Ruth had the paper for five years, before selling her home in Frederick and moving to Aberdeen. She began working at Edward Jones on Nov. 8, 1978, retiring on Dec. 15, 1998.
She attended the Methodist Church, where they were active in Sunday school. Ruth was involved with Cub Scouts, president of the P.T.A., president of Methodist Ladies, a member of Alpha Circle, and member of S.D. Press Association.
Grateful for having shared Ruth’s life are: her children, Kathryn (Doug) Nelson, Mankato, Minn., Richard (Pamela) Smith, Cordillera, Colo., Stephanie (Thomas) Zerfas, Aberdeen, Randall (Trudi) Smith, Wahpeton, N.D.; grandchildren, Sara (David) Williams, Matthew Nelson, Brittany Smith, Linsey Smith, Joshua Zerfas, Meghan (Ty) Edwards, Kristi “Kiki” Smith, Allison Smith, Ryan Smith; great-granddaughter, Addyson Edwards.
She is preceded in death by: her parents; husband; and brothers, Arnold Haug, Gerald “Swede” Haug, and Ralph Haug.
