Mabel R. Bailey
Memorial services for Mabel Margaret Riebe Bailey, 93, Tempe, Ariz., were held on Saturday, July 10, 2004 at Pingree Lutheran Church, Pingree, N.D. Mrs. Bailey died Thursday, July 1, 2004 in Friendship Village Medical Center, Tempe, Ariz.
Mabel Margaret Christensen, daughter of Edward and Meta (Lippert) Christensen was born on September 6, 1910 in Verona, N.D. She graduated from Verona High School. She also graduated from Trinity Hospital School of Nursing in 1937. She worked as a Registered Nurse in North Dakota, Minnesota, Washington and Oregon.
On June 16, 1942, she married
Grover C. Riebe. They farmed near Pingree, N.D., until his passing in 1985.
Mabel spent winters in Arizona until moving permanently to Tempe, Ariz. in 1997. She married
Walter M. Bailey July 20, 1993. He died in 2002.
She is survived by two sons, Grover (Jan) Riebe, Gwinner, William (Elaine) Riebe, Pingree; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Edward Christensen, LaMoure and Louis (Bonnie) Christensen, Verona.
Interment at Pingree Cemetery, Pingree, N.D.
Melford H. Haugen
Memorial services for Melford H. Haugen, 74, Jamestown, were held on Thursday, July 8, 2004 in Quam-Plaisted-Cushman Funeral Home, Cooperstown, N.D. Mr. Haugen died Monday, July 5, 2004 in Jamestown.
Melford Harold Haugen was born on March 22, 1930 in Hannaford, N.D. He attended school in Dover, N.D. In 1951, he joined the U.S. Army and served in the Korea conflict until his discharge in 1953. He later attended North Dakota State School of Science, Wahpeton. He returned to Hannaford and continued farming.
On January 29, 1961, he married
Delores Kmetz. He later moved to Detroit Lakes and then Jamestown.
He is survived by two sons, John (Cammy), East Grand Forks, Minn., James (Paula), Grand Forks; two daughters, Janell (Ronald) Kunze, Luverne, N.D. Jeanine Haugen, Moorhead; six grandchildren; and three sisters, Sylvia (Leslie) Peterson, Esther (John) Thompson, both Hannaford and Beverly (Oliver) Cooper, Lisbon.
Interment will be held at a later date in Eidfjord Cemetery, Dover.

Eileen M. Hoggarth
Funeral services for Eileen M. Hoggarth, 59, Wimbledon, N.D., were held on Monday, July 5, 2004 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery, Wimbledon. Reverend Robert Leiste and Reverend John Dawson officiated. Mrs. Hoggarth died Wednesday, June 30, 2004 in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Eileen Margaret Groth, daughter of Irvin and Edna (Lambrecht) Groth was born on July 26, 1944 in Fargo. She lived on a farm near Enderlin until she was six years old. In 1950, Eileen moved with her family to Wimbledon, where her father purchased the John Deere dealership. She attended school there and graduated from Wimbledon High School in 1962. After graduating, she attended Interstate Business College in Fargo and then worked for the City and County Health Nurses in Jamestown until July 1967.
On May 25, 1966, she married
Russel Hoggarth at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Wimbledon. They made their home in Wimbledon and owned and operated the Wimbledon Implement Company for many years. Eileen was very active in the Wimbledon Community.
She is survived by her husband, Russel Hoggarth, Wimbledon; one son, Ron Hoggarth, Wimbledon; one daughter Lisa (Rich) Smith, Sioux Falls; three grandchildren; her mother, Edna Groth, Fargo; two sisters, Barb (Roger) Nims, Lisbon and Verna (Don Timms, Newark, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her father, and a brother in infancy, Ronald Groth.
Interment at St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery, Wimbledon.

Kenneth R. Lindemann
Funeral services for Kenneth R. Lindemann, 87, were held on Tuesday, July 6, 2004 at Faith Lutheran Church, West Fargo. Mr. Lindemann died Friday, July 2, 2004 in his home after a brief illness.
Kenneth Robert Lindemann, son of Robert and Alvina Lindemann was born on March 20, 1917 in rural Enderlin. He graduated from Enderlin High School in 1936. He attended college at Wahpeton State School Science and later left the area to work for Lockheed Aircraft in Los Angeles, Calif. He returned to rural Enderlin to farm.
On February 5, 1944, he married
Alice Gust. They farmed for eleven years before relocating to Lake George, Minn. where they owned and operated the Woodland Store and Resort. Ken earned his Commercial Pilot’s license in 1956 returning to the Fargo area where he did aerial crop spraying until 1968. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol for a number of years and served as Captain of the local CAP squadron; he also served as Vice-chairman of the West Fargo Airport Authority. In 1969 Ken began a long and rewarding career at Steiger Tractor as a Field Service Technician traveling throughout the United States as well as internationally. He retired in 1987, but returned at the request of the company until finally retiring at the age of 81.
He is survived by his wife Alice Lindemann; two daughters, Andrea (Brian) Abraham, Horace; Margo Evenson, Fargo; one son, Tyler (Jane) Kindred; eleven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; one brother, Willis (Peggy), San Jose, Calif. and one sister, Doris Utke, Enderlin.
Interment at Pontiac Cemetery, rural Enderlin.

James “Mike” Mashek
Funeral services for James “Mike” Mashek, 78, Wyndmere, were held on Friday, July 9, 2004 at St. John’s the Baptist Catholic Church, Wyndmere. Reverend Louden-Hans Flisk (from Sykeston, N.D.) officiated. Mr. Mashek died Sunday, July 4, 2004 at St. Francis Nursing Home, Breckneridge.
James “Mike” Perry Mashek, son of Louis and Eva (Olson) Mashek was born on February 6, 1926 at West End Township, rural Wyndmere. He attended rural schools in West End Township. He entered the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict from November 15, 1950 until November 15, 1952. He returned to Wyndmere upon his discharge. Mike then was a self-employed livestock trucker.
On August 18, 1955, he married
Barbara Shorma at St. John’s the Baptist Catholic Church, Wyndmere. In 1974, he was employed at the Wyndmere Farmer’s Elevator until 1985. In 1985, the couple purchased the Tastee Freeze in Wyndmere and operated Mashek’s Tastee Freeze, until their retirement in 1997. He was sexton and caretaker of the Elk Creek Cemetery
for numerous years, and was area representative for Fergus Falls Monument Company. He was a 50 year member of the Wyndmere American Legion, serving as Commander for several years and several years as Adjutant and was a 10th District Commander of the ND American Legion. He was an active member of the 40 & 8 of Wahpeton, active member of the Wahpeton Knights of Columbus, Wyndmere Senior Citizens, active member and caretaker of the Wyndmere St. John’s the Baptist Church, an active member of the Wyndmere Community Club and in 1982 he was named the Wyndmere outstanding Businessman of the Year.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Mashek, Wyndmere; three daughters, Cindy Mashek, Wyndmere, Joanie (Chris) Kratcha, Horace, Lori (Paul) Sorum, Breckenridge, Minn.; two sons, Michael (special friend, Peggy) Wyndmere, Charles (Wanda) Mashek, Wyndmere; 11 grandchildren; two sisters, Doris (Adin) Helgeson, Bismarck, Edith Jordheim, McLeod; two brothers, Harold Mashek, Wyndmere, Edward (Vivian) Mashek, Fargo; and four half-sisters, Carl (T.J.) Spale, Grafton, Helen (Raymond) Novotny, Lidgerwood, Beverly (Duane) Huus, Emerick, N.D. and Jeanette Froslie, Chula Vista, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother, Hattie Mashek and two brothers, Lyle and Harlan.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Joshua Kratcha, Jason Kratcha, Justin Sorum, Darren Jacobsen, Shawn Jacobsen, Zach Patshkowski, Frank Hlavnicka and Bill Kuchera Honorary casketbearers are all those who called Mike friend.
Military Rites were conducted by the Wyndmere American Legion Brown-Nelson Post No. 153, and the “Sons of American Legion”, and the Fargo Army Reserve.
Interment at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Wyndmere.

Ronald Ray Raatz
Funeral services for Ronald Ray Raatz, 73, Verona, were held Thursday, July 8, 2004 at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Verona, with Reverend David Isaacson officiating. Mr. Raatz died Saturday, July 3, 2004 at the MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Ronald Ray Raatz, son of Awald and Esther (Tiedman) Raatz was born October 23, 1930 in Fargo. He grew up and attended Cleveland Country School near Verona. After his schooling, Ronald left North Dakota to work on the Garrison Project, later returning to North Dakota where he farmed with his father and other area farmers.
On March 16, 1952, he married
Joan May Hess in Verona. The couple moved onto the family farm, where Ronald became and avid farmer and rancher. He took great pride through the years in raising Limousin cattle. He enjoyed the spring cattle and farm sales. He was a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church, Verona.
He is survived by his wife, Joan, Verona; seven children, Curtis, South Dakota, Paul, Valley City, Kevin (Karen) Norfolk, Neb., David (Tina) Petersburg, Va, Virginia, Long Lake, S.D., Pernell (Julie), Rothsay, Minn., and Miles (Lynette), Verona; two brothers, Keith (Beverly), Lisbon, and Jerry (Pansy), Portland, Ore.; fourteen grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Ronald was preceded in death by his son, Jeff, and his parents.
Pallbearers were Harold Hess, Bernie Vculek, Harvey Schuman, Carstien Fugl, Chuck Magill, Jim Raatz, and Leroy Schneider.
Organist was Marlene Dahl.

Lyla O. Schmidt
Funeral services for Lyla O. Schmidt, 85, Jamestown, were held on Monday, July 5, 2004 at Victory Lutheran Brethren Church, Jamestown. Pastor Shawn Bowman officiated. Mrs. Schmidt died Friday, July 2, 2004 at Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Home, Jamestown.
Lyla Ornetta Louisa Koetz, daughter of Charles and Anna (Fabian) Koetz was born on August 5, 1918 in Leonard. She grew up and attended a country school in the area.
On September 25, 1936, she married
Victor Schmidt in Enderlin. They farmed near Enderlin and moved into town in 1949 where they owned and operated the Friendly Tavern until his death on October 25, 1959. Lyla also lived in Cavalier and Valley City until she moved to Jamestown in 1991.
She is survived by three daughters, Audrey (Roger) Brumfield, West Fargo, Diane (Ron Smedshammer, Detroit Lakes, Sandra (Vince) Burns, Jamestown; one son, Dr. Dwight (Gwen) Schmidt, Jamestown, 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, one sister, Alice Norby, Morris, Minn., and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband and ten brothers and sisters.
Interment at Pontiac Cemetery, Enderlin.

Maurice R. Schmit
Funeral services for Maurice R. Schmit, 79, Fargo, were held on Tuesday, July 6, 2004 in Church of the Holy Spirit, Fargo. Mr. Schmit died Wednesday, June 30, 2004 in Riverview Place, Fargo .
Maurice Robert Schmit, son of Mathias and Veronica (Wiederholt) Schmit, was born on September 17, 1924 in Lisbon. He grew up in Lisbon and graduated from Lisbon High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp during World War II and was stationed on Kodiak Island, Alaska. Following the war he moved to Fargo, where he graduated from Dakota Business College. He began working for O’Day Equipment Company as an accountant.
On April 14, 1947, he married
Mary Lazorenko in Lisbon. He later served as office manager at Farm Implement Wholesalers and Alloway Manufacturing, both in Fargo. He then began working at Northern Data Communications in Fargo, from which he retired in 1989. His wife, Mary, died November 7, 1995.
He is survived by two sons, Craig, Grand Forks, Douglas (Darla) Plymouth, Minn.; one daughter, Vicki Schmidt, Crystal, Minn.; eight grandchildren; three brothers, Francis (Gladys), Rugby, Richard (Maxine) Bismarck and Louis (Phyllis) Coeur D Alene, Idaho; four sisters, Mary (Leo) Lemna, Enderlin, Bernadette Kreyer, Tempe, Ariz., Dolores (Larry) Timmer, Tempe, Ariz. and Margaret (Bud) Hitchcock, Mesa, Ariz., and two sisters-in-law, Jean Schmit, Kandiyoho, Minn. and Louelle Schmit, Bowman, N.D. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Mary, daughter, Pam Thompson and two brothers, Joseph and Raymond.
Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, Fargo.
