Nora Arntson Boyle
Nora Arntson, of Norwegian descent, was born to Nicolay and Mary (Ylivsaker) Arntson on the family farm in Owego Twp, Ransom County on February 15, 1913.
She first attended Owego Consolidated School and then elementary and high school in Sheldon. After graduating, Nora received her teaching certificate from Valley City State College. She taught in Shenford School District #8 for three years from 1932 until 1935 and then at schools in Elliott and Valley City. She moved to Seattle, WA where she married
her high school sweetheart and fellow 1931 Sheldon graduate, John E. (Jack) Boyle, on October 11, 1941. Boeing had recently hired John where he had a 30-year career.
In 1942 the Boyles moved to Kent, WA. During this time of severe housing shortages John and Nora shared their home, often for lengthy periods, with relatives and friends from North Dakota who had taken defense jobs but could not find housing. Nora earned her B.S. degree in political science and education from Seattle Pacific University. She had resumed her elementary teaching career in the Kent Public School District. She ended her 33-year teaching career in 1978. Nora was a life member of Beta Sigma Pi Sorority and had been active in Eastern Star.
In retirement, John and Nora spent many happy hours of square dancing and traveled extensively. In 1991 John and Nora celebrated 50 years of marriage with family and friends. From 1958 until 1992 John and Nora enjoyed their home on Lake Meridan near Kent, WA. On clear days they had a lovely view of Mount Rainier. After John died Feb. 24 1992, Nora moved to Akron OH to be near her daughter, Marilyn and her son, Tim.
The 91year old Nora, who died on February 2, 2005, enjoyed her many friends in Tower 80 on Portage Path in Akron, where she lived for 12 years. She also enjoyed swimming or walking daily, getting a kick out of the antics of her great-grandchildren, Fiona and Maeve, and watching them grow, reading and shopping. "I love being close to my children, my grandchildren and my great-grandchildren and thoroughly enjoy every minute I'm with them, " Nora said recently, and then added, "Life is good, I'll tell you!" She may have remembered earlier times when she attended the exciting World's Fair in Chicago in 1933 using borrowed money to pay her expenses; the stylish, warm karakul coat she’d worn against the winters' chill in the late 1930s: and her snappy, overpowered bright yellow V/8 Ford Mustang in later years. Nora was a firm believer in the power of education to improve people's lives. She and her four sisters were all teachers. Her children and grandchildren, as well as their spouses, average at least two college degrees! Over the years John and Nora traveled to Sheldon many times to visit family and friends. Her last visit was in 1999. She leaves to cherish her memory, her son, Tim Boyle (Adrianne) of Peoria, IL: a daughter, Marilyn Bowman (Ken MacDonald) of Green, OH: a granddaughter Nicole Gaffney (Alan) of Copley, OH: a grandson, Dr. Brad Bowman (Dr. Jaime) of Portland, ME and great-grand-daughters Fiona and Maeve Gaffney, who gave her much joy. Nora also is survived by her 98-year old brother, Neuman Arntson (Esther) of Sheldon, ND; sister, Agnes Archbold of Mankato, MN; and brother-in-laws, Dan Boyle (Ann MacKay) of Naples, FL and W. D. Newton of Minneapolis, MN. Her sisters, Prudence Arntson, Lillian Wall, and Evelyn Newton died before her.
A private family Mass of Christian burial was held for Nora on February 8, 2005 in Akron, OH. Memorial donations in her name may be made to the Hospice Care Center, 3340 Ridgewood Rd., Akron, OH 44333.
