Clinton John Fonder, Jr.
Clinton John Fonder, Jr. died April 11, 2006. Clinton, son of Clinton and Christa (Wood) Fonder, Plymouth, MN, was stillborn on April 11, 2006.
He is survived by his parents, Clinton and Christa (Wood) Fonder, Plymouth; sisters, Grace and Emily; half-sisters, Alyssa and Kristin Fonder, Breckenridge, MN; grandparents, Patrick and Deloris Fonder, Ipswich, SD and Douglas Strander and Sandra Wood, Aberdeen, SD; great-grandparents, Esther and the late Albert Doerr, Aberdeen and Emery and Mary Strander, Lisbon; godparents, Nathan Wood and Michelle Pfieffer, Aberdeen, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
A private memorial will be held at a later date.

Doris A. Helgeson
Funeral services for Doris A. Helgeson, 89, Bismarck, ND, were held Wednesday, April 19, at Wyndmere Lutheran Church, Wyndmere, ND. Rev. Jack Carlson officiated. Mrs. Helgeson died April 14 in Bismarck.
Doris Anne Mashek, daughter of Louis and Eva Mashek, was born June 10, 1916 at Wyndmere. She was raised on her parent's farm and attended elementary school in West End Township. Her mother died when Doris was 11 years old and left five younger siblings. Doris graduated from Wyndmere High School at age 16. She began work during the Great Depression as a domestic nanny for prominent Fargo families.
On September 1, 1937, she married
Adin Helgeson at Bethel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton, ND. They farmed in West End and Garborg Townships near Wyndmere for 21 years. Doris was a 4-H leader and a member of Gol Aal (Grace) Lutheran Church and active in the Ladies Aid.
She is survived by her husband, Adin; daughter Gayle (Arne) Selbyg, Prospect Heights, IL; son Gary Helgeson, Bismarck; grandson, Lieutenant Commander Jon Selbyg, U.S. Navy, Sicily, Italy; granddaughter, Anne (Joseph) Lindell, St. Louis Park, MN; one sister, Edith Jordheim, McLeod, ND; two brothers, Harold Mashek, Wyndmere and Edward (Vivian) Mashek, Fargo; four half-sisters, Carol (T.J.) Spale, Grafton, ND, Helen (Raymond) Novotny, Lidgerwood, ND Beverly (Duane) Huus, Cathay, ND, and Jeanette Froslie, Chula Vista, CA; two sisters-in-law, Helen Pokorny, Wahpeton, and Barbara Mashek, Wyndmere; one uncle, Ephraim Evavold, Rushford, MN, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Interment at Elk Creek Cemetery, Wyndmere.

Anna Kunze
Funeral services for Anna Kunze, 81, Valley City, ND, were held Saturday, April 15, 2006, in the Lerud-Johnson-Schuldt Funeral Home, Valley City. Rev. Mark Ostgarden officiated. Mrs. Kunze died Tuesday, April 11 at the Sheyenne Care Center, Valley City.
Anna Josephine Rasmusson, daughter of Charles and Hannah (Nelson) Rasmusson, was born April 25, 1924, at Valley City. She grew up with her family and lived near Dazey, ND where she grew up and attended school.
On July 7, 1941, she married
Frank Kunze at Valley City. The family farmed near Pillsbury, ND for two years. They then moved south of Valley City where they farmed and later moved into Valley City. In 1963, Frank and Anna moved to Tower City, ND where they resided until Frank’s death on September 7, 1965. Anna later moved into Valley City. She worked as a dishwasher for area restaurants and at Mercy Hospital. She later retired. Anna became a resident at the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City in October, 2004.
Anna is survived by her children, Frances Haws, Valley City, Susie Hejtmanek, Valley City, Frank (Louise) Kunze, Lisbon, Robert (Hope) Kunze, Valley City, and David Kunze, Bismarck, ND; two sisters, Betty Selleck, Valley City and Frances (Clayton) Elm, Valley City; twenty-one grandchildren, and twenty-one great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; one son; three daughters; four grandchildren; four brothers, and five sisters.
Interment at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Valley City.

Phillip A. Hallett
Funeral services for Phillip A. “Phil” Hallett, 81, Forman, ND, formerly of Milnor, ND, were held on Friday, April 21, 2006 at the Milnor United Methodist Church. Rev. Jack Erickson officiated. Mr. Hallett died Tuesday, April 18, at Four Seasons Health Care, Forman.
Phillip A. Hallett, son of Neil and Laura (Murdock) Hallett, was born March 5, 1925 at Clitherall, MN. He grew up and attended school at Clitherall. At the age of 13, he moved to Lisbon, ND and began working for area farmers. On June 12, 1945, he married
Adeline Groen at Lisbon. The couple moved to Milnor in 1947, where Phil worked for Ole Holt at his service station and Allis Chalmers dealership. In 1952, Ole sold the business to Farmer’s Union Co-op and Phil continued to work there until his retirement in 1984. From 1984 until 1994, Phil drove school bus for Milnor Public Schools. In 2002, he and Adeline moved to Wahpeton, ND. In February, 2005, he entered Four Seasons Health Care in Forman.
Phil is survived by his wife, Adeline, Forman; one son, P. Robert (Carol) Hallett, Harwood, ND; one daughter, Peggy (David) Braaten, Forman; two brothers, Lloyd (Alice) Hallett and Leslie Hallett, both of Verndale, MN; seven grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Noel, and one great-grandson.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Brent Braaten, Brian Braaten, Wade Hepper, Kenny Eichhorn, Randy Hallett, and Ryan Hallett.
Music was provided by organist Kim Mund and soloist Orvis Dahlen.
Interment at Lakeside Cemetery, Milnor.

Leonard Shipton
Leonard Shipton, 88, Berlin, WI, formerly of Lisbon, ND, died at the Berlin Hospital on Thursday, April 20. A full obituary will follow in next week’s Gazette.
Joanne C. Hendricks-Brown
Joanne C. Hendricks-Brown, 70, of Portland, OR, formerly of Kathryn, ND, died January 15, 2006. Cremation has taken place through Family Memorial Mortuary.
Joanne’s daughters encourage family and friends to come to her Celebration of Life memorial service which will be held at Preston Lutheran Church in Fort Ransom, ND on May 6 at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Kris Nyman officiating.
Burial of her urn will be in the Preston Cemetery.
Joanne was born July 27, 1935 in Fargo, ND to Roy and Jennie (Birklid) Hendricks-Stevens. She was raised and educated in the Sheyenne Valley area, graduating from Fort Ransom in 1953. Joanne attended Interstate Business School in Fargo and also earned a degree in computer and word processing at Bismarck State College where she attended in 1986-1988.
She is survived by her four daughters, Vicki Brown, Portland, OR, Cindy Cryer, Auburn, WA, Linda (Delton) Schnaidt, Beulah, ND, and Susan (Brad) Thornton, Jamestown, ND. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Savannah Nelson, Sierra Schlager, Lucas Schnaidt, and Bryce Klose, as well as several nieces and nephews.
She will be treasured in our hearts forever for her lively mind, her willing heart to help others and her sense of humor. God blessed her with a wonderful, contagious laugh. We will forever remember the last bit of advice she shared in her last moments with us... “Smile... no tears.”
Joanne was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Jennie Hendricks-Stevens; two sisters, Marion Bush-Knudson and Patricia Stevens; one brother, Earling (Bud) Hendricks; two infant grandchildren, Gracie Leann and Jessi Lee, and one son-in-law, Anthony L. Cryer.
Allan Strand
Allan Strand, 51, Monument, CO, formerly Lisbon, died March 5, 2006 at Colorado Springs, CO. A memorial service will be held in the spring.
May Christine Vraa
Funeral services for May Christine Vraa, 85, Fargo, ND, were held on Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at Mavis Whiting Chapel, Bethany Homes, Fargo.
Mrs. Vraa died Wednesday, March 1, at Bethany Homes, Fargo.
May Christine Chose, daughter of Christ and Martha (Hoff) Chose, was born on May 21, 1920, on a farm near Fort Ransom, ND. She attended grade school at the Bell School. In October 1950, she moved to Fargo, where she was employed at Fairmount Creamery, May Ann Weaving Shop, and St. Luke’s Hospital.
On February 15, 1958, she married
E. Donald Vraa in Fargo. They moved to Harwood, ND, and later to Fargo. After a few years, they moved to Garden Grove, CA. Mr Vraa died April 1982. At that time, May moved to Oregon where she worked at the laundry of a nursing home until April 1989, when she moved back to Fargo. She entered Bethany Homes in 2003.
May is survived by a brother, Robert (Ruth) Chose, Moorhead, MN; sisters-in-law, Carol (Clarence) Chose, Fargo, and Edith (Selmer) Blakesley; 11 nephews and six nieces.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; three brothers, Selmer, Martin, and Clarence; sister-in-law, Martha (Martin) Chose, and a niece.
Interment at Long Beach, CA.

Steven E. West
Funeral services for Steven E. West, 57, Hope, ND, were held on Thursday, Mar. 9, 2006, at the Hope American Legion Hall, Hope. Mr. West died Saturday, March 4, at the North Dakota Veterans Home, Lisbon, ND, under the care of Hospice of Ransom County.
Steven E. West, son of William and Barbara (Bullis) West, was born on January 25, 1949, in Valley City, ND. He attended schools in Tower City, Pillsbury, and Oriska, ND. Steven was assigned to the 4th Cavalry in Vietnam on December 7, 1968, as armor intelligence specialist. When he served in Vietnam he received the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star with V for Valor, the Sharp Shooter Medal, Military Merit Medal, Vietnam Medal, and the National Defense Medal.
In 1968 he married
Mary Diego. He belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), and he worked most of his life in construction.
He is survived by one son, Steven W. West; three daughters, Crystal Malterie, Fargo, ND, Heather Wolhart, Jamestown, ND, and April Anderson, Lakeville, MN; mother, Barbara West, Hope; two brothers, Martin (Cynthia) West, Hope, and David (Jody) West, Bonita Springs, FL, and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, William; two brothers, William and Don, and one granddaughter.
Interment at Hope Cemetery, Hope, ND.
