James B. Onsum
Funeral services for James B. Onsum, 82, Dilworth, MN, were held on Friday, March 31, 2006 at Glyndon Lutheran Church, Glyndon, MN. Mr. Onsum died Sunday, March 26 at his home.
James B. Onsum, son of Berthol and Henrietta (Jolly) Onsum, was born March 4, 1924 in Glyndon. He was raised in Dilworth where he received his education.
As a young man, Jim worked as a brakeman for the Northern Pacific Railway. He entered the U.S. Army on March 3, 1943 and served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He was discharged February 21, 1946.
On May 2, 1947 he married
Edna Marie Orud at Aberdeen, SD. They made their home in Dilworth where Jim continued to work for Northern Pacific Railway as a brakeman. They moved to Glyndon in 1958. Edna died June 25, 1982. Jim retired in 1985 and returned to Dilworth in 1997.
He is survived by four daughters, Sharon Hillyard, Enderlin, ND, Mary (Bob) Knapik, San Diego, CA, Nanci (Danny) Heuer, Glyndon, and Julie (Mike) Lammer, Fargo, ND; four sons, Larry (Bev), Moorhead, MN, Darcy (Debbie), Perham, MN, David, Bullhead City, AZ, and Kenneth (Rene), Dent, MN; thirteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, and a sister, Evelyn (Hubert) Bleese, Enderlin.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna; son, Bruce; brother, Walter, and sister, Kathryn Erstad.
Interment at Riverside Cemetery, Glyndon.

Delores R. Salzwedel
Funeral services for Delores R. Salzwedel, 74, Fargo, ND were held on Tuesday, March 28, 2006 at Hope Lutheran Church, North Campus, Fargo. Mrs. Salzwedel died Friday, March 24 at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Delores R. Fraedrich, daughter of Theodore and Emma (Freitag) Fraedrich, was born March 18, 1932, on the Freitag Farm near Enderlin, ND. She grew up and attended school in Enderlin and graduated from Enderlin High School in 1951.
On May 29, 1955, she married
Donald Salzwedel in Enderlin. They made their home in Fargo, ND. Delores worked in food service at North Dakota State University. Her husband Donald died February 8, 2001.
Delores is survived by three daughters, Darlene (Chuck) Gulsvig, Moorhead, MN, Denise (Denis) Bartholomay, Sheldon, ND, and Debra (Dave) Lontz, Moorhead; one brother, Theodore (Jackie) Fraedrich, Coon Rapids, MN; two sisters, Marthanna (James) Gilbert, Enderlin and Doreen Shinn, Fargo, and ten grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Donald; one grandson, Trevor John Bartholomay; two brothers, Leo and Conrad Fraedrich, and two sisters, Irene Poff and Erma Waldhelm.
Interment at Sheldon Cemetery, Sheldon.

Delores Hanson
Funeral services for Delores Hanson, 90, Fargo, ND, were held on Tuesday, March 28, 2006 at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo. Mrs. Hanson died Friday, March 24 at her home in Fargo.
Delores Hanson, daughter of George and Thea (Ulness) Hanson, was born June 10, 1915 in Verona, ND. She attended school in Oakes, ND, and graduated from Ellendale University, where she received her teaching degree in elementary education.
On August 22, 1942, she married
Roy Hanson in New Orleans, LA. She worked for many years as a teacher, was co-owner of Hanson-Schmidt Construction Co., and was also a housewife.
She is survived by her son, Wayne Hanson, Fargo; daughter, Linda (Allan) Woods, Gardner, ND, and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Roy, and son Lyle.
Interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo.

Harry H. Hempler
Funeral services for Harry H. Hempler, 82, West Fargo, ND were held on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2006, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Oakes, ND. Rev. Patrick O’Brien officiated. Mr. Hempler died Monday, Feb. 20, at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Harry Horst Hempler, son of Reinhold and Alma (Fiebich) Hempler, was born October 24, 1923 in Schwanis, Germany. In 1926 the family came to the United States and settled near Crete, where they farmed. Harry attended school in Crete, and graduated with the class of 1940.
On January 2, 1949, he married
Irene Schock at Verona, ND. They farmed near Crete until 1956 when they moved into Oakes, and Harry began working for Ottertail Power Company. In 1976, they moved to Wahpeton, ND, and Harry continued employment with Ottertail. In 1986, he retired and the couple moved to West Fargo. Irene died on February 26, 2005.
Harry was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. He was also a Boy Scouts of America leader.
He is survived by two sons, Larry (Mary Ann) Hempler, Farmington, MN, and Tom (Yvonne) Hempler, Melbourne, FL; three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene; his parents; a daughter, Lynette Gross, and a granddaughter, Amy Marie Hempler.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Eric Hempler, Adam Hempler, Brian Schmitz, Rodney Schmitz, Jason Neuharth, and Steve Zetocha.
Music was provided by organist Donna Cline.
Interment at the Oakes View Cemetery, near Oakes.

JoAnn Schulte
Funeral services for JoAnn Schulte, 69, Bismarck, were held on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2006 at the Church of St. Anne, Bismarck. Rev. Edwin Wehner officiated. Mrs. Schulte died February 24, at her home.
JoAnn Japel, daughter of Frank and Leona (Rutherford) Japel, was born August 12, 1936, at Page, ND. She was educated in Tower City where she graduated from high school. She then attended Wahpeton School of Science and graduated with a nursing degree in 1956.
On June 27, 1957, she married
Ron Jacobs in Oriska, ND. They moved to Bismarck in 1961, where JoAnn worked at St. Alexius Hospital in obstetrics until 1979. She then worked at Mid Dakota Clinic for Dr. Robert Jennings until her retirement in 1994. Her husband Ron passed away in 1989. On December 9, 1990, she married
Ervin Schulte in Bismarck.
JoAnn was a member of the Catholic Daughters, the St. Mary’s and University of Mary Booster Clubs, the Eagle’s Auxiliary and a member of the Red Hatters. She was also a volunteer at the St. Alexius Medical Center.
She is survived by her husband, Ervin, Bismarck; three daughters, Barb (Greg) Neutz, Bismarck, Ann (Greg) Schommer, Minot, ND, and Patty (Barry) Schumacher, Bismarck; one son, Marc (Brenda) Jacobs, Black Hawk, SD; 11 grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Arlene (Don) Altringer, Jamestown, ND, Marvin (Mary) Japel Sioux City, IA, Elaine Schultz, Brainerd, MN, Marly (John) Roney, Center, ND, Loren (Sue) Japel, Bismarck, ND, and Karen (Doug) Schweigert, Powell, WY.
She is also survived by five stepchildren and eight stepgrandchildren.
JoAnn was preceded in death by her husband Ron, and her parents.
Interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bismarck.

Oscar B. Guttormson
Funeral services for Oscar B. Guttormson, 73, Valley City, were held Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at the Lerud-Johnson-Schuldt Funeral Home, Valley City, with Wendell Kopperud officiating. Mr. Guttormson died Sunday, February 26, 2006 at Mercy Hospital, Valley City.
Oscar Bennett Guttormson, son of Oliver and Bernice (Haarsager) Guttormson, was born December 17, 1932 at Fort Ransom, ND. He grew up in the Fort Ransom area and graduated from Fort Ransom High School.
After completing his education, Oscar served in the United States Marine Corps from 1950-1952. He lived in California for a time and then later in Texas.
On June 25, 1968, he married
Darlene David at Fort Worth, TX. The couple moved to the Valley City area where Oscar worked various jobs as a mechanic and in roofing and general construction.
Oscar was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2764 of Valley City.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene, Valley City; four daughters, Debra Guttormson, Mandan, Diane Guttormson, Mandan, Cindy Sasse, Bismarck, and Sara Hanson, Fort Ransom; one brother, Ray (Betty) Guttormson, Los Angeles, CA; one sister, Dorothy Peltier, Fargo; seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Michael, and one brother, Anton.
Interment at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery
at Mandan, ND.

William Joel Manikowski
Funeral Mass was celebrated for William Joel Manikowski, 42, Geneseo, ND, on Friday, March 3, 2006, at St. Martins Catholic Church, Geneseo. Fr. J. Vincent Fitzpatrick, Fr. Matthew Attansey, and Deacon Jerome Wisnewski were concelebrants. Mr. Manikowski died Tuesday, Feb. 28 near Geneseo.
William Joel “Billy” Manikowski, son of John and Rosina (Aberle) Manikowski, was born on August 11, 1963 in Hankinson, ND. He was baptized at St. Martin’s Catholic Church, Geneseo, and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Lidgerwood, ND. He attended Lidgerwood Public School and graduated in 1982. In 1981, he joined the North Dakota National Guard and served for twelve years. He attended North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, ND, in the pre law enforcement program. He then worked for Comstock Construction before starting his career with Bobcat Company, Gwinner, ND. He was employed there for 17 years as a welder and also in the maintenance department. During that time, he also provided assistance to Todd’s Construction, Kevin Gaukler Construction, and Ken’s Concrete.
On May 7, 1988, he married
Lavonne Ebel at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Lidgerwood. Billy rejoined the National Guard in 2002. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for his service in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Billy was a member of the Lidgerwood American Legion Bullis Post #84, St. Martin’s Church, Tewaukon Rod and Gun Club, Fort Ransom Arena Association, and Hankinson Sandhills Saddle Club.
He is survived by his wife, Lavonne Manikowski, Geneseo; two daughters and one son, Bobbie Jo, Tessa, and Levi Manikowski, Geneseo; his parents, John and Rosina Manikowski, Geneseo; three brothers, John Walter (Rita) Manikowski and Stan (Betty) Manikowski, Geneseo, and Byron Manikowski, Lidgerwood; two sisters, Yvonne (Ernest) Wegener, Kindred and Deb (Kirk) Toepke, New Salem, ND; brother-in-law, Todd (Paula) Ebel, Lidgerwood; sister-in-laws Carla (Jeff) Stack, Lisbon and Brenda (Mike) Ballinger, Kansas City, KS, and mother-in-law Viola Ebel, Kansas City.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, father-in-law, Merle Ebel, and a sister-in-law, Mary Beth Jensen.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Sgt. Jeff DeFries, Sgt. Seth Manikowski, Sgt. Chris Manikowski, Dean Dolezal, Kelly Ballhagen, Ed Korth, and Kevin Gaukler. Honorary pallbearers were relatives, friends, and those who served or rode beside him.
Music was provided by organist Alane Dunn and soloist Tom and Linda Kaczynski, and Dani Marie Schwartz.
Millitary honors by North Dakota National Guard 142nd ECB Heavy and Lidgerwood American Legion Bullis Post #84.
Interment at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, rural Lidgerwood, ND.
