Edward C. Saar
Funeral services for Edward C. Saar, 94, Fargo, ND were held on Monday Feb. 27, 2006, at the West Funeral Home, West Fargo. Mr. Saar died Friday, Feb. 24, at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Edward Carl Saar, son of Herman and Othelia (Schilke) Saar, was born on January 25, 1912, at Portal, ND. He grew up on a farm near Leonard, ND and attended school in Leonard. He farmed near Leonard all his life. Ed retired in the early 1980s and moved to Barnesville, MN. In 1999 he moved to the Towers at Bethany Homes in Fargo. In 2003, he entered the care unit at Bethany.
He is survived by six siblings, Martha Nesemeier, Barnesville, Lydia Newman, Milwaukee, WI, Rienhold (Irene) Saar, Enderlin, Fred Saar, Wahpeton, ND, Luella Thingstad, Grand Forks, ND, and Caroline McLaughlin, Fargo.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Amanda Nesemeier and Hattie Luedtke.
Interment at Leonard Cemetery, Leonard, ND.

Mary E. Peterson
Funeral services for Mary E. Peterson, 96, Moorhead, MN, were held on Monday, Feb. 27, 2006 at Faith Lutheran Church, West Fargo. Rev. Dr. Peter Schmidt officiated. Mrs. Peterson died Friday, Feb. 24, at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Mary Elizabeth Kile, daughter of Henry and Hulda Kile, was born on June 29, 1909, in Isley Township, Ransom County, ND. She was raised on the family farm and attended rural school.
On July 23, 1927, she married
Napoleon Peterson at Breckenridge, MN. They made their home on a farm in Ransom County where they raised eight children. In later years, Mary worked at a nursery in Oakes, ND. She also worked on a honey bee farm and with the potato harvesting at Englevale, ND. Napoleon died in 1976. In 1976 she moved to West Fargo. In 2001 she moved to Eventide Lutheran Home in Moorhead.
She is survived by six children, Iona Toyne, Lisbon, ND, Lillian Brewer, Fargo, Lois Mammenga, West Fargo, Phyllis Jackson, Shelton, WA, Gordon (Brenda) Peterson, Hubbard, OR, and Shirley Stoppleworth, Kent, WA; 14 grandsons; 5 granddaughters; 39 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Napoleon; her parents; one son, Kenneth; one daughter, Marlyn Walock; 2 grandchildren; 4 sons-in-law, and one daughter-in-law.
Interment at Oakwood Cemetery, Lisbon.

Adeline D. Olson
Funeral services for Adeline D. Olson, 102, Lisbon, were held on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lisbon. Rev. Norm Anderson and Rev. David Killeen officiated. Mrs. Olson died February 3, 2006, at Lisbon Area Health Services, Lisbon.
Adeline D. Olson, daughter of Frank and Josephine (Jandrt) Janecek, was born January 17, 1904 at Ord, NE. She attended grade school at Ord.
On October 3, 1922, she married
Nels N. Olson at Omaha, NE. They farmed near Lisbon. Nels died May 16, 1968. Adeline moved into Lisbon in 1969. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Lisbon.
She is survived by four sons, Clifford “Bud” (Mayvis), Willmar, MN, Willis, Lisbon, Donald (Janice), Lisbon, Gary (Phyllis), Fargo; two daughters, Goldie Bott, Lisbon and LaVonne Steele, Lisbon; 24 grandchildren, and 41 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, an infant son, DuWayne; three brothers, and four sisters.
Pallbearers for the funeral were her grandsons.
Music was provided by organist Cindy Hagel and soloist Joan Montgomery.
Interment at Oakwood Cemetery, Lisbon.

Judi Hall
Funeral services for Judi Hall, 54, Jamestown, ND, were held on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006, at the United Presbyterian Church, Jamestown. Rev. David Thompson officiated. Judi died Friday, Feb. 3, at Jamestown Hospital, Jamestown.
Judi Lochow Hall, daughter of Charles and Carol (Otto) Lochow, was born November 26, 1951 in Jamestown. She grew up in Courtenay, ND, and graduated from Courtenay High School. She worked at Jamestown Hospital as a nurse’s assistant, and later, at Western Gear in Jamestown.
On November 28, 1975, she married
Kenneth Hall. They moved to Linton, ND where she was an assistant librarian and provided daycare. The family moved to Towner, ND, where Judi resumed daycare. She also provided home cleaning services. The family later moved to LaMoure, ND, then to Jamestown where their home has been since. Judi volunteered at the Jamestown Hospital Gift Shop and the Frontier Village in Jamestown. Judi was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Jamestown and the Circle of Faith at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Jamestown. She also attended Jamestown Christian Women’s Club.
She is survived by her husband Kenneth, Jamestown; two sons, Christopher Philip (Barbara) Runck, Lakeville, MN, and Nicholas Jon (Nickela) Runck, Lisbon; step-daughter, Dana (Jerry) O'Neill, Woodworth, ND; 7 grandchildren; two sisters, Joan (Rick) Kramlich, Courtenay, and Connie (Kevin) Sommer, Cavalier, ND, and two brothers, Chuck (Annette) Lochow, Russell, KY, and Gary (Candy) Lochow, Devils Lake, ND.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Interment at Gem Cemetery, Woodworth, ND at a later date.

Thilda Vangstad
Funeral services for Thilda Vangstad, 104, Osakis, MN, were held on Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2006, at the Elim Lutheran Church, rural Osakis. Rev. Paul Hohncke officiated. Miss Vangstad died Sunday, Feb. 5, at the Community Memorial Home, Osakis.
Thilda Vangstad, daughter of Mikal and Oline (Langdahl) Vangstad, was born July 29, 1901, in Gordon Township, Todd County, MN. She and her twin sister Lena, attended country school before graduating from Osakis High School in 1919. They both attended normal school training and began teaching in rural schools near Osakis. Thilda attended summer school to upgrade her credentials and eventually received bachelors and masters degrees from the University of Minnesota. She did her graduate studies at George Williams University in Chicago and the University of North Dakota at Grand Forks. She also attended the University of Lincoln in Nebraska. Thilda’s teaching career took her to Langdon High School in Langdon, ND; Crookston High School in Crookston, MN, and Petosky High School in Michigan. Thilda joined her sister, Lena, at Valley City State College, and accepted a position as principal of the College Model High School. She later became a member of the social science department. Thilda and Lena retired from college life in 1969 and returned to live near their childhood home in rural Osakis. In 1984 they moved to an apartment in Osakis and then moved together to Terrace Heights, an assisted-living apartment in Osakis.
Thilda was a lifelong member of the Elim Lutheran Church, rural Osakis, where she had been baptized and confirmed as a child. She belonged to several state and national education organizations, the American Association of University Women (AAUW), and the Delta Kappa Gamma sorority. Thilda has relatives in the Lisbon area.
She is survived by her twin sister, Lena Vangstad, Osakis, and one other sister, Margaret Erickson, Windom, MN.
Thilda was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Ole and Arthur Vangstad, and six sisters, Marie Susag, Martha Martine, Helga Klukken, Anna Flynn, Esther Vangstad, and Ruth Hultgren.
Pallbearers were Pat and Mike Flynn, Mike Brick, Richard Susag, Ron Johnson, and R. Virgil and Lowell Klukken. Honorary Pallbearers were the Valley City State University Delegation, Phil and David Larson, Don Moore, Loren and Lester Fiskness, Chuck Hector, Blanche Carlson, Sylvia Johnson, and Robert Grossman.
Music was provided by Juanita Klukken, Myron and Allen Larson, Ray Mikkelson, and Vicki and Marlene Larson.
Interment at the Elim Church Cemetery, rural Osakis.

Michael J. Mashek
Funeral Mass for Michael J. Mashek, 46, Wyndmere, ND, was celebrated on Monday, Feb. 6, 2006, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Wyndmere. Rev. Leonard Loegering was celebrant. Mr. Mashek died Friday, Feb. 3 at his home.
Michael John Mashek, son of James and Barbara (Shorma) Mashek, was born May 31, 1959, in Breckenridge, MN. He grew up near Wyndmere and attended school in Wyndmere. He started his career with American Wheel & Brake, Fargo, and S & R Trucking, Cayuga, ND. He later purchased West Fargo Truck Wash and in 1991 started Mashek Brothers Trucking, which he owned and operated until his death. He was also a cattle rancher. Mike was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and was a representative for the Sheyenne Valley Grazing Association.
He is survived by his mother, Barb Mashek, Wyndmere; three sisters, Cindy Mashek, Wyndmere, Joanie (Chris) Kratcha, Horace, ND, and Lori (Paul) Sorum, Breckenridge; one brother, Charles (Wanda) Mashek, Wyndmere; Darren and Shawn Jacobson, Hope, ND, and special friend Peggy Baumgart.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ted and Sophie Shorma, Louis and Hattie Mashek, and his father, James “Mike” Mashek.
Interment at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, Wyndmere.

Elva L. Schimming Brehm
Funeral services for Elva L. Schimming Brehm, 91, Enderlin, were held on Saturday, Feb. 4 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Enderlin, ND. Rev. Mike Toomey officiated. Mrs. Brehm died February 1, 2006, at Maryhill Manor, Enderlin.
Elva L. Schimming Brehm, daughter of James and Inga (Anderson) Scilley, was born March 11, 1914, in rural Leonard, ND. She attended school in rural Leonard.
On June 17, 1933, she married
Ed Schimming at Britton, SD. They farmed near Leonard. Ed died in 1950, and after his death, Elva and children moved to Enderlin. Elva graduated from Wahpeton College in 1965 with a degree in nursing. She then worked at MeritCare in Fargo, a hospital in Helena, MT, and United Hospital in Grand Forks, ND. She returned to Enderlin in 1979. December 6, 1980, she married
Melvin “Bud” Brehm in Fargo, ND. After their marriage, they lived in Churchs Ferry, ND until they returned to Enderlin in 1990. Melvin died April 11, 2002. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Enderlin.
She is survived by two daughters, Karen Redmond, Enderlin and Janice (Walt) Rodlund, Fargo; one son, Myron (Carolyn) Schimming, El Sobrante, CA; one brother, Eugene (Ida), Fargo; one sister, Marjorie Olson, Seattle, WA; 10 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands and a daughter, Eunice Johnson.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Dallas Redmond, Tom Schmidt, Greg Rodlund, Steve Rodlund, Jess Redmond, and Kelly Redmond. Honorary Pallbearers were the Maryhill staff, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Music was provided by organist Gretchen Hoy and soloist Sara Lichtblau.
Interment at Enderlin Cemetery, Enderlin.
