Ora L. Elliott
Funeral services for Ora L. Elliott, 72, Sanborn, ND, were held on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2006, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Valley City. Rev. Ellen Arthur officiated. Mr. Elliott died Monday, Feb. 6, at his farm near Sanborn.
Ora Elliott, son of Drew and Elsie (Law) Elliott, was born June 25, 1933, at Valley City, ND. He grew up on the family farm and attended rural school and later graduated from high school. He enlisted in the US Army and served with the 4th Infantry Division. Following his discharge, he returned to Sanborn and farmed with his father until 1974, when he took over management of the farming operation.
On January 7, 1989, he married
Diana Wiemann Olderness at Fargo. The couple made their home on the family farm. He retired from farming in 1994. Ora was a life member of the American Legion, the National Rifle Association, and the Valley City Trap Club. He was also a member of the Valley City Eagles Aerie 2192. He served on the Leal Cemetery
Board for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Diana, Sanborn; son Mike Elliott, Norfolk, VA; three children from a previous marriage, Chris Elliott, Valley City, ND, Clay (Tammie) Elliott, Sanborn, and Cindy (Terry) Schwab, West Fargo; a step-son, Jeff Olderness, Lisbon; a foster-sister, Jaci Ames, Wimbledon, ND, and nine grandchildren.
Interment at Leal Cemetery, Leal, ND.

Agnes Josephine Jacobson Knudson
Agnes was born in Fort Ransom, ND on August 20, 1907, and passed away in Seattle, WA on February 19, 2006.
Agnes was the oldest of ten children born to Albert Sandhei Jacobson and Marie Kavli Larson, who immigrated to North Dakota from the vicinity of Mo I Rana in Northern Norway in the late 1800s. Agnes grew up on her family’s farm, “Fairbanks”, which was located on the prairie west of Fort Ransom. At age 18, after graduating from Lisbon High School, she attended Valley City State Teachers’ College.
Agnes’ first job was teaching in Wishek, ND, grades one through eight, in a one-room schoolhouse. After three years of teaching, she moved to Fargo to attend business school.
While working at the Fargo Forum, Agnes met William (Fritz) Knudson, who was a printer at the paper. The two fell in love and were married
in Aberdeen, SD on December 10, 1932. They had two daughters, Jane Louise and Carol Anne. During World War II, the family moved to Seattle and settled in the Capital Hill neighborhood. Fritz passed away in 1957.
Agnes’ working career in Seattle included employment in the bookkeeping department at the Golden Glint Company, the accounting department at Frederick & Nelson, and production control at Boeing Airplane Company.
Throughout her life, Agnes was very involved with her family, church, and local community. She cared for and inspired all people who came through her door.
Agnes is survived by her sister Ingrid Johnson of Seattle, WA; sister-in-law, Florence Knudson of Seattle, WA; daughters Jane Louise (William) Fite of Hansville, WA and Carol Anne (Scot) Bergren of Orinda, CA; grandchildren Erica Marie (Ivan) Horvath of New York, NY, David William (Ann) Fite of New York, NY, Mary Agnes (Peter) Rowen of Seattle, WA, Eve-Marie Bergren of Boise, ID, William Scot Bergren (Margaret Schmidt) of Pleasant Hill, CA, Sarah Anne (Rafael) Diaz of Denver, CO, Lindsay Jane Bergren of Orinda, CA, and Jenny Catherine Bergren of Orinda, CA; great grandchildren Laszlo Kenton Horvath and Eva Miles Horvath of New York, NY, Schuyler David Rowan and Josephine Jane Rowen of Seattle, WA, Finola Agnes Bailey of Boise, ID, and Tyler Scot Bergren of Pleasant Hill, CA; nieces Karen (Ron) Peterson and Georgialee (Ken) Rufsvold of Fort Ransom, ND, and many other nieces and nephews.
A memorial service to celebrate Agnes’ life was held at Central Lutheran Church in Seattle on February 25. Memorial donations in honor of Agnes may be made to standing Rock Lutheran Church in Fort Ransom, ND or Central Lutheran Church in Seattle, WA
Allan Thomas Strand
Allan Thomas Strand, 51, of Monument, CO, formerly a resident of Lisbon, ND, died peacefully Sunday evening, March 5, 2006 at Pikes Peak Hospice.
He was born September 30, 1954 in Lisbon, ND. He grew up in a rural community on the family farm. He was a diesel mechanic for IR Bobcat.
Allan was preceded in death by his parents; Almont and Mary Strand. He is survived by his four sisters, Sylvia Cole, Gaylene Leonard (Larry), Sandee (Greg) Strand and Lynn (Marty) Lazechko. Several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews also survive him.
A memorial service will be held in Lisbon, ND at a later date.
Son, brother, uncle, godfather, cousin, friend, patient-a gracious man.
Arne H. Skramstad
Funeral services for Arne H. Skramstad, 90, Enderlin, ND, were held on Thursday, March 16, 2006 at First Lutheran Church, Enderlin. Rev. Leon Zavadil officiated. Mr. Skramstad died Saturday, March 11, at Maryhill Manor, Enderlin.
Arne H. Skramstad, son of C. Palmer and Wihlmina (Anderson) Skramstad, was born April 22, 1915 in rural Enderlin. He attended school in rural Enderlin, and Enderlin High School.
On January 1, 1946, he married
Olga M. Schlecht at Enderlin. They farmed near Enderlin and vacationed many winters in Mesa, AZ. He attended First Lutheran Church, Enderlin.
He is survived by his wife, Olga; three sons, Lee (Mary), Moorhead, MN, Gary, Fargo, and Marty (Dianne), Wahpeton; three grandchildren; one brother, Merlin (Vivian), Apache Junction, AZ, and one sister, Vivian (Simon) Bjerke, Enderlin.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Lester, and one sister, Clarice Schlecht.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Lee Skramstad, Gary Skramstad, Marty Skramstad, Douglas Skramstad, Aaron Skramstad, Joel Krabbenhoft, and Duane Skramstad.
Music was provided by organist Gretchen Hoy and soloist Paul Billing.

Helen P. Loberg
Funeral services for Helen P. Loberg, 92, Onalaska, WI, were held on Monday, March 13, 2006 at Bethany Lutheran Church, McLeod, ND. Mrs. Loberg died Wednesday, March 8, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, LaCrosse, WI.
Helen Pearl Otterson, daughter of John and Clara (Olson) Otterson, was born November 27, 1913 on a farm near Hazelton, ND. The family moved to McLeod and Helen graduated from Enderlin High school in 1931.
In 1934, Helen married
Orville Loberg. They lived in Fargo, ND. The family home was in Golden Ridge until 1957, when a tornado destroyed it. They moved to Wheatland, ND, and returned to Fargo in 1960. Helen worked at North Dakota State University at the student Union. They returned to McLeod when she retired. After Orville’s death in 1979, Helen lived in Breckenridge, MN for 12 years. She moved to LaCresent, MN in 1995. In 2002, she moved to the Onalaska Care Center in Onalaska.
Helen is survived by her son, Roger (Sandra) Loberg, Fargo; her daughter Eileen (David) Estee, Onalaska; a sister Lucille Engbloom Sessing, Moorhead, MN; 11 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sons Robert and Harold; three brothers; one granddaughter, and a daughter-in-law Mrs. Robert (Pauline) Loberg.
Interment at Freeman Cemetery, McLeod.

Jestina Vangsness
Funeral services for Jestina Vangsness, 91, formerly of Kindred, ND were held Friday, March 17, 2006 at West Prairie Free Lutheran Church, rural Kindred. Mrs. Vangsness died Sunday, March 12, at Parkside Lutheran Home, Lisbon.
Jestina Constance Enger, daughter of Jens and Cora (Bilden) Enger, was born April 18, 1914, on a farm south of Gladstone, ND. She attended a nearby rural school and graduated from Gladstone High School in 1931. After her mother died, Jestina Helped raise her younger siblings and worked for other families in the area.
On December 23, 1940 she married
Clifford Vangsness. They rented farmland at Marshall, ND until 1946, when they purchased their farm in Barrie Township, southwest of Kindred. Clifford died in 1999.
Jestina was an active member of West Prairie Lutheran Church and served many years in Sunday School as teacher and superintendent. She was also active in the West Prairie Ladies Aid.
In 2003, Jestina moved to Lisbon, and in 2004, she entered Parkside Lutheran Home.
She is survived by sons Norman, Lisbon and Marlin (Vicki), Fairborn, OH; daughter Carolynn (Nelson) Helland, Lewiston, MN; 9 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren, and sisters Arilene Kirsch, Dickinson, ND and Vivian Mergenthal, Glendale, CA.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, a grandchild, a sister, and three brothers.
Interment at West Prairie Lutheran Cemetery, rural Kindred.

Mildred Schalkle
Funeral services for Mildred Schalkle, 95, formerly of Redfield, SD, were held Wednesday, March 15, 2006 at Thelen Funeral Home, Redfield. Rev. Tim Fugman officiated. Mrs. Schalkle died Sunday, March 12 at Parkside Lutheran Home, Lisbon.
Mildred Pearson, daughter of Fred and Augusta (Jackson) Pearson, was born May 14, 1910, at Wahoo, NE. She moved with her family to Redfield and attended Redfield Public School. She worked at Redfield Laundry and at the local drugstore.
On August 13, 1948, she married
Henry Schalkle at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. They lived in Redfield most of their married
life. Henry died in 1985. Mildred was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, the ladies aid and circle, American Legion Auxiliary and VFW Auxiliary.
She is survived by one brother Roy Pearson, Redfield; and nieces and nephews in the Fargo and Wahpeton area.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, and two sisters, Hazel Pearson and Gladys Hallquist.
Interment at Greenlawn Cemetery, Redfield.

Orrin L. Hanson
Funeral services for Orrin L. Hanson, 79, Casselton, were held on Wednesday, March 15, 2006 at Armstrong Funeral Home, Enderlin. Rev. Mike Toomey officiated. Mr. Hanson died Saturday, March 11, 2006, at Good Samaritan Center, Arthur, N.D.
Orrin L. Hanson, son of Henry and Josephine (Thompson) Hanson was born on November 30, 1926, in Climax, Minnesota. He attended Climax School, graduating from high school in 1944. he attended Chef School in Devils Lake.
He served in the U.S. Navy from March 14, 1945 - December 18, 1945.
In 1948 Mr. Hanson became the manager of the Victoria Elevator in Climax. He managed elevators in Dazey, Underwood, Zeeland, and Leonard, N.D.
On February 19, 1958, he married
Olene H. Miller, in Crookston, Minn.
After marriage they lived near Leonard, Fingal, Valley City, and Enderlin. They lived in Nome from 1970-1985. Mr. Hanson was employed by the Tower View Cafe in Tower City, N.D. from 1964-1998. They moved to the Casselwood Retirement Community in 1991 where he lived until March, 2006. She died August 16, 1998.
Mr. Hanson was a card holding member of the Sons of Norway.
He is survived by a sister-in-law, Mavis Gaines, Callahan, Fl.; Pallbearers for the funeral were friends and family in attendance.
Special Music was provided by organist Janet G. Hansen, and singers, Becky Block and Eileen Kohlman.
