Phyllis S. Eng, 80, Hankinson, N.D., formerly of Portland, N.D., died Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011 at Sanford Health South in Fargo, N.D.

Larry Lee Osborn, 67
Larry Lee Osborn, 67, Wahpeton, N.D., died Monday, Sept. 19, 2011 at his home.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 23, 2011 at United Methodist Church, Breckenridge, Minn., with the Rev. Gary Gottfried officiating. Interment
will be at Fairmount Cemetery, Fairmount, N.D.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011 with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Willow Creek Chapel, Wahpeton and one hour before the service at the church on Friday.
Larry was born Oct. 2, 1943 in Breckenridge to Leonard and Clara (Stelton) Osborn. Larry grew up on the family farm in LaMars Township, rural Fairmount, and was baptized and confirmed at Bethany United Methodist Church. He graduated from Rosholt High School in 1961, Rosholt, S.D., attended Valley City State College, Valley City, N.D., and taught school at Dickey, N.D.
On June 18, 1966 he married
Jeanne Baird and they taught at Graceville, Minn. Larry joined Peavey Milling Company and they lived in Tonka Bay and Hastings, Minn., for a time. In 1976 Larry took over the family farm in LaMars. In 1988 he became the director of tax equalization for Richland County and moved to Wahpeton in 1997.
Larry was a member of United Methodist Church, Breckenridge. He was an active member of state and regional professional associations while the director of tax equalizations and received awards for excellence and achievement from the North Dakota State Counties and National Association of Counties.
He enjoyed traveling and outdoor life, including fishing trips to Minnesota lakes and the Missouri River. He also enjoyed golfing with his sons and was on a bowling league for many years. Larry had an appreciation for writing and was the author of two books and enjoyed researching genealogy.
Larry is survived by his wife, Jeanne Osborn, Wahpeton; two sons, Steven (Joy) Osborn, Cambridge, Minn., and Mark Osborn, Northfield, Minn.; his sister, Connie (Bernie) Kleinwort, Fargo, N.D.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Clara Osborn.

James William Mohs, 84
James William Mohs, 84, died Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2011 at St. Catherine’s Living Center, Wahpeton, N.D.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton, with the Rev. Morris Stevens officiating. Interment
is at Fairview Memorial Gardens in Wahpeton.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
James “Porky” Mohs was born March 28, 1927 the oldest of six children, to Charles and Bertha (Albright) Mohs in Breckenridge, Minn. He attended school in Wahpeton. He moved with his family to Edgely, N.D. In December of 1941 he entered the U.S. Navy, where he served in the Pacific. Upon his discharge in 1946, he returned to Wahpeton and worked on local farms until beginning his truck driving career with Peavy Company. Porky retired from trucking in 1996 and lived in Rothsay, Minn., for a short time before moving to Breckenridge. He became a resident of the Veteran’s home in Lisbon, N.D., in March of 2008 and for the last three years he lived at St. Catherine’s Living Center, Wahpeton.
Porky enjoyed playing cards and spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his brother, Delmar (Pauline) Mohs, Wahpeton; his sister, Arlene Rensvold, Wahpeton; his step children, Kenny Rhodes, Rothsay, Danny Rhodes, Sidney, Mont., and Rhonda Dasinger, Sidney; and several nieces and nephews.
Porky is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Bertha Mohs; and his sisters, Arlitta, Magdalene, and Marlys.

John ‘Jack’ H. Pfister, 90
Jack H. Pfister, 90, Wahpeton, N.D., died Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011 at St. Francis Healthcare Campus, Breckenridge, Minn.
The funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 3, 2011 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Wahpeton, with the Rev. Terry Dodge as celebrant. Interment
will be at Calvary Cemetery, Wahpeton.
Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011 with a 6 p.m. prayer vigil at Willow Creek Chapel, Wahpeton and one hour before the funeral at St. John’s Church on Monday.
John “Jack” Herbert Pfister was born Nov. 27, 1920 in Fargo, N.D., the son of Herbert and Rita (Rowan) Pfister. He graduated from Wahpeton High School in 1938 where he excelled in tennis. He attended North Dakota State School of Science from 1938-39, continuing his education at University of Minnesota where he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1943, and also participated in tennis and was member of the “M” Club.
He served in World War II in Dental Corps in the U.S. Army, European Theater from 1944-46, being honorably discharged as a Major.
Jack married
Jean E. Nyfeler in May of 1946 and started his private practice in general dentistry in Wahpeton from late 1946 with his father and was involved until 2011 in which he was practicing with his daughter, Joan.
He was active in several dental organizations as a decretary, board of trustee and president of North Dakota Dental Association, and held several positions at the national level of the American Dental Association; including 10th District Trustee for two terms and a member and chairman of The American Dental Association Council on Hospital Dental Service. Jack was also a fellow of the International College of Dentists, and a fellow of The American College of Dentists. Locally, Jack was in partnership in Music Stores in Wahpeton, Bismarck, Minot and Sioux Falls, S.D., as well as being a director for Wahpeton National Bank.
Of Jack’s many accomplishments, he was most proud of helping implement the dental hygiene program at North Dakota State College of Science.
His wife Jean passed away March 10, 1978 and Jack married
Barb Jensen Sturdevant in 1979. They continued to reside in Wahpeton. Jack was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church where he previously served as a trustee. He was very involved in the community, serving on the city council, special assessment commission, chamber of commerce, community development corporation and Greater North Dakota Association.
He enjoyed golf, skiing, tennis. He won several tennis singles championships and also doubles championships, pairing up with his father.
Jack is survived by his wife, Barb, Wahpeton; six children: Michael (Dee) Pfister, Westminster, Colo., Patricia (Lee) Stiles, Grand Junction, Colo., Timothy (Tarra) Pfister, D.D.S., Billings, Mont., Joan (Randy) Pope, D.D.S., Wahpeton, Polly (Gene) Pope, Overland Park, Kan., Jacqueline (Tom) O’Neill, Shoreview, Minn.; two step-children, Tim (Marcy) Sturdevant, Seattle, Wash., and Annette (Chris) Hofschild, Prior Lake, Minn.; 17 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
Jack will be remembered as a dear, sweet, gentle soul who loved to have fun and laugh, and enjoy life. He was the best husband, dad and grandpa one could ever hope for.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Rita (Rowan) Pfister; and his wife, Jean.

Jean Ista, 81, Colfax, N.D., died Monday, Sept. 26, 2011 at Sanford Palliative Care, Fargo, N.D.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Colfax, with the Rev. Roger Reinhart officiating. Interment
will be at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery, Mooreton, N.D.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, 2011 with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Vertin-Munson Funeral Home Wahpeton, N.D. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the service at the church.

Helen Novotny, 99, formerly of Mantador, N.D., died Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011 at St. Francis Nursing Home, Breckenridge, Minn.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 30, 2011 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Hankinson, N.D. Burial will be at Bohemian Cemetery, rural Lidgerwood, N.D.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011 with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Hankinson. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the service at the church.
