Paul S. Rice
Funeral services for Paul S. Rice, 71, Barnesville, MN were held Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006, at St. James United Church of Christ, Barnesville. Pastor John Carpenter officiated. Mr Rice died Saturday, Feb. 18, at Innovis Health, Fargo.
Paul S. Rice, son of Selmer and Edna (Campbell) Rice, was born July 23, 1934, in Barnesville. He attended school there, and graduated from Barnesville High School in 1952. He attended Valley City State College where he graduated with a bachelor of science degree in music education in 1957.
On June 13, 1959, he married
Linda Hoffman at the First Presbyterian Church, LaMoure, ND. Paul taught high school music in Oakes, Kathryn, LaMoure, Wyndmere, and Enderlin from 1955-1967. He served for a time as president of the North Dakota Music Educators Association and was active with the Fargo-Moorhead Opera Company. In 1967 they moved to Ada, MN where Paul took the position as Ada High School choral music instructor. For seven summers between 1967 and 1973, Paul was on staff of the Many Point Scout Reservation, Viking Council, of the Boy Scouts of America, Ponsford, MN. In 1976 he taught high school music in Chaffee, ND. In 1976 he and Linda moved their family to Barnesville. In 1978 they purchased the Barnesville Dairy Queen, which they owned and operated until 1999 when they built a new Dairy Queen Brazier and turned the management over to their son, Jamie.
Paul was a member of St. James United Church of Christ and served on the board of trustees. He was the choir director at St. James for many years and served as choir director for his home churches in Enderlin and Ada. He was also a member of the Main Street Program in Barnesville and a past member of the Lions, Kiwanis, Masonic Lodge, and the Boy Scouts of America. He was a founding member of the Fargo-Moorhead Civic Opera Company.
He is survived by his wife Linda, Barnesville; two sons, Jason (Christy) Sioux City, IA and Jamison (Ruth), Barnesville, and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Wendy, and two sisters, Allis Bens and Jean Anne Thompson.
Pallbearers for the funeral were James Hansen, David Bredman, Curtis Butenhoff, Rolland Larson, Richard Ma, and Jay Rex Soutenburg. Honorary Pallbearers were all the Barnesville Dairy Queen employees, past and present.
Interment at City Cemetery, Barnesville.

Audrey Groebner
Mass for Audrey Groebner, 95, Albuquerque, NM, was celebrated on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2006, at the Gate of Heaven Chapel, Paseo del Norte, NM. Mrs. Groebner died February 16, in Albuquerque.
Audrey Louise (Hanna) Groebner was born on October 6, 1910 in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. She was a graduate of Oakdale Nursing School, Mason City, IA. She moved to Albuquerque in 1939.
In 1940 she married
Al Groebner. She was an active member of the Progress Women’s Club, Green Thumb Garden Club, Our Lady of Fatima Women’s Guild, Kappa Sigma Dames, and a supporter of St. Mary’s and St. Pius’ High schools.
She is survived by two sons, Jerome (Cheryl), and Robert (Karen) Groebner; four granddaughters; one sister, Wilma Halstead; one brother, Roger Hanna, and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Al; four sisters, Alice, Ada, Alta, and Dorothy; two brothers, John and Robert, and one grandson.
Entombment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Paseo del Norte, NM.

Richard D. Tamlyn
Mass for Richard D. Tamlyn, 80, Verona, ND, was held on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006, at St. Raphael’s Catholic Church, Verona. Celebrant was Father Pamplaniyil. Co-celebrant was Father Adam Hasey. Mr. Tamlyn died Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Oakes Community Hospital, Oakes, ND.
Richard (Dick) Tamlyn, son of William and Elizabeth Tamlyn, was born on August 27, 1925, in Watertown, SD. He went to grade school at Immaculate Conception Catholic School and high school at Watertown High School. In October, 1943, he joined the United States Army. He was wounded at Normandy, France, in August, 1944, and spent the next 15 months in an Army hospital until he was discharged on November 27, 1945. In December, 1945, he came to Verona to work at the Farmers Elevator.
On June 11, 1948, he married
Joyce Holman in Verona. They made their home there. In 1949, Dick began working for Joyce’s father, Mel, at the family-owned bar and barbershop. He took over the business in 1951. Dick and Joyce continued to operate “Dick’s Bra” until they retired in January, 1994. Joyce died on March 14, 2005.
He served as past commander of the Jones Benoit American Legion; was an active member of St. Raphael’s Catholic Church, where he served as bookkeeper, and was also on the Verona Park Board.
Dick is survived by three sons, Tom (Brenda) Tamlyn, Battle Lake, MN, Todd (Kathleen) Tamlyn, M.D., Winona, MN, and Bill (Heidi) Tamlyn, St. Paul, MN; one daughter, Patti (David) Rickford, Valley City, ND, and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce; his parents; an infant son; four brothers, and one sister.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Marvin Mangin, David Peterson, Austin Pithey, Dan Raatz, James Raatz, and Thomas Strahm.
Music was provided by organist Marlene Dahl and soloist Lynette Anderson.
The Jones-Benoit American Legion Post #178 provided military rites.
Interment at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Cemetery.

Milford A. Olson
Funeral services for Milford A. Olson, 93, Bemidji, MN, formerly of Minot, ND, were held on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2006, at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot. Rev. Don Andrews, Chaplain at Trinity Health, officiated. Mr. Olson died Saturday, Feb. 18, at North Country Regional Hospital, Bemidji, MN.
Milford A. Olson, son of John A. and Bertha C. (Hovde) Olson was born December 28, 1912 in Litchville, ND. He was confirmed at the North LaMoure Church June 10, 1927. He attended school in Litchville Township. He served in the U.S. Army from February 7, 1942 to August 25, 1945. He was in the South Pacific with Company C, 21st Infantry, 24th Division, in Hawaii, Australia, New Guinea, and the Philippines.
In July, 1946 he married
Dolores Nygaard of Litchville. On May 5, 1969, he married
Berniece Hill of Minot. Milford was a member of the VFW. He worked as a civilian at Minot Air Force Base from February 1962 to November 1978. He also worked as a janitor at the Presbyterian Church, Frontier Airlines, and Poor Farm.
He is survived by sister, Adele Sander, Mitchell, SD; daughter Judy (Chuck) Tims, Horace, ND; stepdaughter Susan Nelsen, Minot; sons James (Carmen), Laredo, TX, Richard (Shela), Bemidji, Mark (Bonnie), Valley City, Paul (Theresa), Thief River Falls, MN, and Timothy (Verna), Gwinner; 19 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters Inga Krag, Laila Olson, and Lyla Jenson, and his brothers Joseph and Floyd Olson, Litchville.
Pallbearers were Gil Fargo, Danny Mitchell, Curtis Hill, Duane Hill, and Pius Matson. Honorary pallbearers were Milford’s grandchildren.
Special music was provided by Gary Stenehjem, organist and Robert Sundberg, vocalist.
Flag presentation was by members of the American Legion, William G. Carroll Post #26, Minot. Taps were played by Christopher Mitchell.
Interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot.

John O. “Jack” Thorson, Jr.
Mass was held for John O. “Jack” Thorson, Jr, 70, on Friday, Feb. 24, 2006, at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit Church, Bismarck, ND. Fr. Thomas Kramer officiated. Mr. Thorson died February 20 at his home.
John O. Thorson, Jr., son of John and Edna (Johnson) Thorson, was born on July 2, 1935 in Minot, ND. He grew up in McClusky, but also had special years in Portland, OR and Bowbells, ND. He graduated from McClusky High School in 1953. After serving his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps, he attended and graduated from the University of North Dakota, where he received his Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctorate degrees.
On December 14, 1956, he married
Glennis Rhoads. They resided in Enderlin and Valley City, where he practiced law until his retirement in 2000. His interest was Real Estate Law. He served as legal counsel to city governments, school boards, and also served the citizens of Ransom County as their States Attorney. He served as general counsel to the Inter-Community Telephone Company for twenty-five years. He was a member of the Kiwanis, Elks, North Dakota Bar Association, and various other service organizations.
He is survived by three sons, John O. (Cathy Jo) Thorson, III, Montgomery, IL, Dr. Thomas A. (Barbara) Thorson, Bismarck, and David (Sandra) Thorson, Titusville, FL; fourteen grandchildren; one great-granddaughter, and his sister Jill (Myrle) Reiswig, Minneapolis, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.
Interment at the North Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery
on Monday, Feb. 27.

Lillian Savre
Lillian Savre, 99, died on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2006, at the Maryhill Nursing Home in Enderlin, ND.
Lillian Carolina Emilie Wagner was born February 2, 1907, in Arthur, ND, to Herman and Bertha (Zellmer) Wagner. She grew up and attended school at Arthur until her graduation in 1925, then attended St. Luke’s Nursing School, graduating in 1928. She married
Alvin Savre on August 20, 1928 in Moorhead, MN. After their marriage, Lillian worked as a nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital until the early 1930s, when the couple moved to Lisbon, ND where Alvin bought Goodyear Tire and Service with brother Kenneth. Alvin and Lillian raised four children together and were married
for 43 years, when Alvin died on December 8, 1971.
Lillian was very proud of her nursing education and experience at St. Luke’s. She was a member of and very involved in volunteering at Trinity Lutheran Church. She was also involved in community activities, belonged to a ladies group and the Birthday Club. She had many special friends in Lisbon and enjoyed visiting and going out for lunch.
Lillian is survived by three daughters, Arla Mae (David) Drill, Billings, MT, D. Ann Savre, Ipswich, MA, and Karen (Ron) Hoff, Missoula, MT; one son, Don (Sue) Savre, Omaha, NE; a sister-in-law Clara Alexander, Lisbon, ND; five grandchildren, Julie (Paul) Neff, Amy (Sean) Haghighi, Michelle (John) Mickle, Karen Drill, and Shawn Savre, and three great-grandchildren, Leo and Lily Haghighi and Erick Mickle.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Alvin; five brothers, Frank, George, William, John, and Amber; a sister, Elsie Thompson, and her cousin and adopted sister, Alice Judisch.
The funeral was held on Saturday, Feb. 18, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lisbon. Special thanks to Beverly Anne Assisted Living of Lisbon and Maryhill Manor Nursing Home of Enderlin. Memorials to Trinity Lutheran Church.
Gary R. Mykland
Funeral services for Gary R. Mykland, 59, Valley City, ND, formerly of Lisbon, ND, were held on Wednesday, April 12, 2006 at Armstrong Funeral Home, Lisbon, ND. Rev. Dan Bader officiated. Mr. Mykland died Sunday April 9 at Mercy Hospital, Valley City.
Gary R. Mykland, son of Lincoln and Doryce L. (Oliver) Mykland, was born April 18, 1946 at Fargo, ND. He attended school in Lisbon, and attended North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, ND.
On March 19, 1989, he married
Patti Herbranson at Lisbon. Gary worked for the Lisbon Police Department, played in the Shey-lo Band, worked at Dahlgren Seed in Lisbon, and as a security guard at Bobcat in Gwinner, ND. He was also a member of the Lisbon Volunteer Fire Department. In 1993 he and his wife moved to Arizona; and in 1997, they moved to Valley City.
He is survived by his wife, Patti, Valley City; his father and step-mother, Lincoln (Jean) Mykland, Wadena, MN; and one brother, Donald (Mary) Mykland, Lisbon.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Greg Mykland, Tony Mykland, Tore Bratvold, Roger Nims, Alan Nims, Mike Nims, Harlan Wilke, Perry Kimble, and Lionelle Milstead.
Music was provided by organist Mary Jo Smith and soloist Joan Montgomery.
Interment at Oakwood Cemetery, Lisbon.
