Helen Vallager, 92
Helen J. Vallager, 92, Wahpeton, N.D., died peacefully Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011 at the Villa St. Vincent Nursing Home in Crookston, Minn.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Helen will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011 in Bethel Lutheran Church in Wahpeton, with the Rev. Jule Ballinger officiating. Interment
will be at Fairview Memorial Gardens in Wahpeton.
Visitation with the family will be held from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011 at Vertin-Munson Funeral Home and also one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
Helen Johnson was born March 28, 1919 in Fargo, N.D., to Robert and Sarah (Olson) Johnson. She grew up in Fargo and graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1936. She attended North Dakota State University and graduated with a degree in dietetics in 1940.
Following a one year internship in Cincinnati, Ohio, she was married
to Emil Vallager June 1, 1942 in Fargo. Emil was deployed in the U.S. Army and Helen returned to Cincinnati until his honorable discharge in 1945. The couple then moved to Langdon, N.D., until 1955 when they moved to Wahpeton, where they raised their two boys, John and Jim.
Helen began teaching nutrition and diet therapy in 1956 at North Dakota State School of Science and retired in 1980. In 1993 she became a 50-year member of the American Dietetic Association and in 1997, a 50-year member of O.E.S. (Order of the Eastern Star) and P.E.O. (Philanthropic Education Organization) Sisterhood.
Helen enjoyed many pastimes, but her favorites included traveling, reading, crossword puzzles and crafting. She was a faithful member of Bethel Lutheran Church.
Helen was devoted to her family and cherished her role as wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend.
She is survived by her son, John (Jan) Vallager, Crookston, Minn.; a daughter-in-law, Priscilla Vallager, Fargo; granddaughters: Kris (Brad) Sufka, Minot, N.D., and Kari (Tim) Moe, Fisher, Minn.; grandsons, Joshua Vallager, Fargo and Jerrod Vallager, Minneapolis, Minn.; and great-grandchildren: Jen-na Sufka, Jacob Sufka and Colton Vallager; as well as other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Sarah Johnson; her husband, Emil Vallager; son, Jim Vallager; a brother, Robert Johnson; and sisters, Bernice Collins and Lillian Archibald.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of the Villa St. Vincent Nursing Home and RiverView Health in Crookston for their excellent care and compassion these past 10 months.
In lieu of flowers, Helen’s family asks that memorials be given to Bethel Lutheran Church or Villa St. Vincent Heated Entry Project.

William “Billy” F. Althoff, 74, Hankinson, N.D., died Tuesday, Oct.4, 2011 at his home in rural Hankinson.
The funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Mantador, N.D. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery
in Hankinson.
Visitation will be held from 5-7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, 2011 with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service and rosary at Frank Family Funeral Home in Hankinson and Saturday morning one hour prior to the service at the church.

IvaLee Tischer, 75
IvaLee Tischer, 75, Hankinson, N.D., died Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011 at her home in Hankinson.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 7, 2011 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hankinson, with the Rev. Douglas Wanderer officiating. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Hankinson. Organist will be Bev Buckhouse.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011 with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hankinson, and Friday morning one hour prior to the service at the church.
Pallbearers will be: Dave Tischer, Roger Tischer, Doug Tischer, Calvin Tischer, Ron Tischer and Dean Tischer.
Honorary pallbearers will be all her grandchildren.
IvaLee Dalin was born June 9, 1936 in Sisseton, S.D., the daughter of Chester and Effie (Carlson) Dalin. She was baptized and confirmed at Walla Lutheran Church, rural New Effington, S.D. She grew up on the farm and attended country school, Lien No. 4 and then graduated from New Effington High School in 1954.
IvaLee was united in marriage to Dennis Tischer May 15, 1955 at Walla Lutheran Church, rural New Effington. After their marriage they farmed near Hankinson. Dennis passed away Jan. 27, 2001 and she continued to live on the farm until moving into Hankinson.
IvaLee enjoyed spending time with her family, babysitting her grandkids and attending their sporting and musical events, especially basketball games She was asked to sing at numerous weddings and funerals. Her voice will be missed by many at church services. She was a second mother to many of her nieces, nephews and her children's friends who stayed at the farm. She also enjoyed visiting with her friends on the phone and going out for coffee, Baking and decorating cakes for friends and family. She loved to collect bears and Denim Days from Home Interior.
She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, the LWML, where she held several offices, and she taught Sunday school for many years, . Every year at Christmas she baked a cake for Jesus and the Sunday School children.
IvaLee is survived by three daughters: Lori (Bruce) Gulan, Hankinson, Valerie (Mike) Sanders, rural Hankinson, Crystal (Joey) Enwiller, Rosholt, S.D.; a sister, JoAnn Foster-Addy, Sioux Falls, S.D.; seven grandchildren: Mindy (Justin) Azure, Sheela Pankow, Patrick and Christopher Gulan, Ethan and Tanner Enwiller and Rylan Sanders.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Effie Dalin; her husband, Dennis Tischer; three daughters, Denise Pankow, Carol Lynn Tischer and Sheila Joy Tischer; a brother, Vernell Dalin; and a sister; Shirley Corley.

James William Mohs, 84
James William Mohs, 84, died Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2011 at St. Catherine’s Living Center, Wahpeton, N.D.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton, with the Rev. Morris Stevens officiating. Interment
is at Fairview Memorial Gardens in Wahpeton.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
James “Porky” Mohs was born March 28, 1927 the oldest of six children, to Charles and Bertha (Albright) Mohs in Breckenridge, Minn. He attended school in Wahpeton. He moved with his family to Edgely, N.D. In December of 1941 he entered the U.S. Navy, where he served in the Pacific. Upon his discharge in 1946, he returned to Wahpeton and worked on local farms until beginning his truck driving career with Peavy Company. Porky retired from trucking in 1996 and lived in Rothsay, Minn., for a short time before moving to Breckenridge. He became a resident of the Veteran’s home in Lisbon, N.D., in March of 2008 and for the last three years he lived at St. Catherine’s Living Center, Wahpeton.
Porky enjoyed playing cards and spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his brother, Delmar (Pauline) Mohs, Wahpeton; his sister, Arlene Rensvold, Wahpeton; his step children, Kenny Rhodes, Rothsay, Danny Rhodes, Sidney, Mont., and Rhonda Dasinger, Sidney; and several nieces and nephews.
Porky is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Bertha Mohs; and his sisters, Arlitta, Magdalene, and Marlys.

Ernest John Gettel
Ernest John Gettel, 92 of Lidgerwood, ND passed away Friday, September 17, 2010 at St. Francis Hospital, Breckenridge, MN Funeral mass will be Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at 10:30 am at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Lidgerwood, ND with Fr. Robert Smith as celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Lidgerwood. Visitation will be Monday, September 20, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. all at St. Boniface Church, Lidgerwood. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers are: Richard Schram, Rick Gleason, Jeremy Gleason, Robert Schram, Carson Schram, Doug Kratz, Joshua Kratz & Michael Kratz. Special music by Pat Duerr.
Ernest John Gettel was born March 18, 1918 in Geneseo, ND, the son of John & Josephine (Illies) Gettel. He grew up on a farm Southeast of Lidgerwood and attended country school south of Lidgerwood. He worked for area farmers. On November 23, 1943 he was united in marriage to Agnes Gaukler at St. Boniface Church, Lidgerwood. After their marriage they lived on the George Duerr farm and later in 1969 he purchased the Anton F. Gaukler homestead. In December 2003 they moved into Lidgerwood and in April 2006 entered Dakota Estates, Lidgerwood. On November 29, 2006 Agnes passed away and he continued to live in Lidgerwood until February 2009 when he moved into St. Catherine’s Living Center, Wahpeton, ND.
Ernest enjoyed fishing and was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus as a 4th Degree and was the Duerr Township treasurer.
He is survived by sons: Joe (Gail) Gettel, Lidgerwood, ND & David (Tomi) Gettel, Lake Forest, CA, daughter: Mary (Allen) Schram, Lidgerwood, ND, brother: Lloyd Gettel, Osakis, MN and sisters: Marcella Gettel, Lidgerwood, ND & Evelyn Nogowski, Omaha, NE, Six grandchildren & eleven great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John & Josephine, wife, Agnes, brothers: Clarence, Ervin & Elmer and a infant sister.
