Melissa & Caden Leingang

Melissa Mischel-Leingang, 38, and Caden Leingang, 7 months, of Sioux Falls, SD, died April 14, 2006 in their home.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, April 20, 2006 at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, with Rev. Charles Axness officiating. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Wednesday, April 19, 2006 and from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon on Thursday, April 20, 2006 at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan. Visitation will continue one hour before the service at the church on Thursday. A prayer service will be held at 7:30 pm on Wednesday at Weigel Funeral Home.

Melissa “Missey” Mischel was born on June 10, 1967 in Mandan, the daughter of Chuck and Janice (Peterson) Mischel. She graduated from Mandan High School in 1985. She moved shortly after graduation to Sioux Falls, SD. She was employed at Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Dakota at the time of her death.

Melissa married Marty Halouska in 1992. They shared a beautiful daughter Desirae who was born on October 25, 1992. Melissa enjoyed any time she got to spend with Desirae, especially trips back to Bismarck and Mandan for holidays and family get-togethers. Melissa later married Brian Leingang and she was blessed with the birth of their son, Caden Leingang, on September 19, 2005.

Although only 7 months old, Caden was starting to stand and his two front teeth were beginning to come in. He was the joy of Melissa’s life and was a very happy baby.

In her spare time, Melissa enjoyed watching Nascar and cheering on her favorite drivers, Jeff Gordon and Jimmy Johnson. Ever since she was a child, she shared with her brothers, the love of their favorite NFL team, the Denver Broncos. She adored her two cats, Beeves and Butthead. She will be remembered by many of us for her great big smile and kind heart.

Melissa and Caden are survived by Melissa’s daughter and Caden’s half-sister, Desirae Halouska, Worthing, SD; her father, Chuck (Betty) Mischel, Spearfish, SD; brothers, Chuck (Julie Dondoneau) Mischel and Mike (Kari) Mischel, both of Bismarck; step-sisters, Danelle (JD) Mutchler and Deb (TJ) Steele, both of Newell, SD and Denise Reinitz, Mandan; mother-in-law, Bernice Leingang, Mesa, AZ; sisters-in-law, Lanette (George) Schnellbach, Mesa, AZ and Brenda (Mike) Gefroh, Scottsdale, AZ; thirteen nieces and nephews.

They were preceded in death by Melissa’s mother, Janice Mischel and her grandparents.

Delbert "Del" Kuhn

Delbert “Del” C. Kuhn, age 76, of Mandan, died April 15, 2006 at the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, April 19, 2006 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan with Father Patrick Schumacher as celebrant. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery with full military honors provided by VFW Post 707 and American Legion Post 40.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 9:00 pm on Tuesday, April 18, 2006 at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan where a rosary/vigil will be held at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday.

Del was born August 25, 1929 in Mandan, the son of Frank and Katherine (Braun) Kuhn. He was raised and educated in Mandan and graduated from Mandan High School. He attended Dickinson State University and the University of Colorado, Anoka Trade School. He served his country in the United States Army aboard the Charles Stafford with the 110 Medical Corps in the European Theater. On May 17, 1950, he married Beatrice Feth in Mandan. Del was a seedman who worked for General Foods for 17 years and Northrop King for 17 years, retiring in 1985 from Shell Oil Company.

Del was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the American Legion, VFW, Eagles, AmVets and the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed golfing and gardening.

Del’s family has many fond memories filled with laughter of Del getting involved in various projects. One in particular was making homemade ski boards, which he painted white, his favorite color. Some of the ski boards would work, some would not. Del’s family was known for their participation in water sports at Lake Isabella and the Missouri River. He took great pleasure in their vacations at Detroit Lakes. Del will be remembered for his excellent cooking and hospitality when people would come to visit…they never left hungry! Traveling was a favorite pastime of Del’s, having traveled around the world. His lawn and garden was always in perfect condition…weeds free!

Del will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by his five daughters and four sons-in-law, Mary (Ed) Neely of Lorton, VA, Pamela (Jerry) McClure of Mandan, Krislyn (Rick) Theurer of Mandan, Janine Kuhn of Lorton, VA and Angela (Todd) Balzer of Sioux Falls, SD; two sons and daughters-in-law, Francis “Bud” (Betty) Kuhn of Underwood, ND and Jerry (Angelica) Kuhn of Texas; fourteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, David (Helen) Kuhn of Ellensburg, WA; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Cora (Joe) Rezore of Bellingham, WA, Rita (Bob) Doll of Bellingham, WA and Angela Ells of Walla Walla, WA.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice, his parents and one brother-in-law, Art Ells.

The family prefers memorials be sent to the Paralyzed Veterans.

Harry Gratz

Harry Gratz, age 74, died peacefully on April 17, 2006 at Elm Crest Care Center in New Salem.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Thursday, April 20, 2006 at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan with Father Albert Leary as celebrant. Burial will be held at the North Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery with full military honors provided by VFW Post 707 and American Legion Post 40.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 pm on Wednesday, April 19, 2006 at Elmcrest Care Center, New Salem and from 5:00 to 9:00 pm on Wednesday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a Knight’s of Columbus Rosary will be held at 6:30 pm, followed by a parish vigil at 7:00 pm.

Harry Gratz was born on June 29, 1931 in Mandan, the son of Adam and Minnie (Kautzman) Gratz. He grew up on a farm near Crown Butte, moving to Mandan in 1945. His first job was at Mandan Beverage. He spent the majority of his career as a plumber/pipefitter at Sanitary Plumbing and Sorenson Plumbing. Harry served his country in the United States National Guard and Army. Harry resided at Elm Crest Care Center since 1982.

Harry possessed a gentle manner. Whenever anybody needed help, he was there for them, constantly going out of his way for the good of others. A favorite pastime of Harry’s was watching TV, especially the Lawrence Welk show and the news. When his boys were young, he treasured the time that he could spend with them outdoors, especially fishing and camping. Harry also loved to smoke his pipe. He was a member in the 3rd Degree of the Knight’s of Columbus and the American Legion.

Wonderful memories of Harry will forever be held in the hearts of his four sons, Nick (Debbie) of Andover, MN, and their children, Alexis and Jeffrey, Larry (Holly) of Plymouth, MN, and their children Andrea, Rachel and Mitchell, Michael (Christy) of Hiram, GA and their children, Melissa, Jacqueline, Catherine, Brittany and Ashley, and Andy (Brenda) of Hiram, GA and their child, Demetri; three great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe (Angie) of Bismarck and Eugene (Donna) of Apple Valley, MN; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Lorraine (Dennis) Glaser of Mandan and Peggy (Russ) Gustin of Fairfax, VA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant brother, Adam and one infant sister, Mary.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to Elm Crest Care Center in New Salem.

Gary Helbling

Gary Dean Helbling, 56, Mandan, died peacefully at home on April 18, 2006 after a battle with cancer.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:00 am on Saturday, April 22, 2006, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with Father Patrick Schumacher and Father Albert Leary con-celebrating. Burial will be in the Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm on Friday, April 21, 2006 at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan where a vigil service will be held at 7:00 pm. There will not be visitation at the church on Saturday.

Gary was born on April 6, 1950 in Mandan, ND, the son of Ralph and Della (Stastny) Helbling. After graduating from Mandan Senior High in 1968, he attended the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, where he graduated as an Industrial Engineer in 1973. He worked for Rausch Manufacturing, St. Paul, MN from 1973-1976. The focus of his career expanded to Environmental Engineering at the North Dakota State Health Department, Air Quality Division, for thirty years. He received national and regional awards for his work in the area of Air Toxicity.

Gary married Laura Hopfauf at Christ the King Church in 1971. Together they had three children which were their greatest achievements, as well as the special love for two grandchildren. Gary will be remembered by his family, friends, and colleagues as a man of integrity, hard work, and kindness. He was an avid tennis player, earning first place championships for several years in the Bismarck-Mandan Tennis Association. His interests also included attending every sporting and school activity of his children, the early Saturday morning coffee meetings at Cappuccino on Collins with Dan Ulmer and the gang, and working on his beloved red rusted out Datsun truck.

Gary is survived by his wife, Laura Helbling, Mandan, ND, a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Brandon and Julie Helbling, and two grandchildren, Breanna and Brady Helbling, Kalamazoo, Michigan, a daughter & son-in-law, Lacey and Jeff Paul, Gilbert, Arizona, a son, Montague Helbling, Mandan, and one sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Tony Brucker, Mandan, ND. He was preceded in death by his parents and infant brother.

Walter J. Siegel

Walter J. Siegel, 76, Mandan, died on April 23, 2003 in a Mandan Nursing Home. Services will be held 10:30 AM on Tuesday, April 29, 2003 at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with Fr. Cyprian Meier officiating. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery. There will be a full committal by the Mandan Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 707 and the American Legion Post 40.

Walter was born on February 19, 1927 in Mandan, the son of Jacob and Monica (Matz) and was raised and educated in Mandan. On September 26, 1955 he married Helen Rush Pinks in Mandan.

Walter made the All State High School Football Team as a Guard at only 127 lbs. He entered the United States Navy January 3, 1945 where he entertained his shipmates with his boxing and held the Navy title of Featherweight Champion. He also served in the United States Air Force in 1951 - 1953.

Walter was the owner and operator of Siegel Trucking; he owned many trucks and travel trailers. He was also a cattle buyer for Thiele-Lembke Cattle Company, Packerland, NFO and Gibbons. After retirement, he continued his love for the cattle business by driving truck part-time for Kuhn Trucking. He passed his love for trucking down to his son, Wall E., and helped him start his own trucking business; so the W.E. Siegel Trucking.

Walter loved bowling and participated in many state and national championships. He enjoyed fishing and hunting with family and friends, and loved to play cards. Walter’s presence will be greatly missed at his favorite spot on Main Street for the 4th of July parade. The parade won’t be the same without him.

Walter was a member of the Moose, American Legion and the National Rifle Association.

He is survived by his adopted son, Pat (Wisconsin) and his son and daughter-in-law, Wally E. (Barb), Bismarck, four daughters and two sons-in-law, Linda Weixel, Mandan, Ellen (Bob) Gustin, Flasher, Cathy Anderson, South Carolina, and Betty (Monte) Myers, Mandan; 11 grandchildren, Tammy Schwanke, Dave Weixel, Becky Lensgrav, B. J. Gustin, Lisa Bonogofsky, Buffy Pittman, Jesse and Jason Siegel, Jodi and Jamie Anderson and Casey Jake Mischel, 4 great-grandchildren; five brothers, Bill and George, both from Montana, Kenny, Mandan, Jack, Oregon, and Bob, Bismarck; four sisters, Marianne Olney, Mandan, Janice Rudus, New Mexico, Donna Vogel, Montana, and Rita Lucas, Washington state.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, who died on August 7, 2000, one daughter, Diane, two sisters, Gen and Jackie, one brother, Dick, two sons-in-law, Rick Weixel and Steve Anderson.

Frank A Leidenix

Frank A. Leidenix, 81, formerly of Huff, ND died on June 10, 2003, in a Bismarck Hospital. Services will be held 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 14, 2003, at St. Martin’s Catholic Church, Huff, ND with Father Al Leary officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Frank was born on January 29, 1922, in Huff, ND, the son of Frank, Sr. and Elizabeth (Howarth) Leidenix. He grew up and attended school in the Huff area. In 1942, Frank entered the US Army and served as an interpreter for the military police guarding German prisoners in Colorado and was discharged in 1945. Frank then returned to the Huff area where her took over the family farm and ranch. He farmed and ranched in the Huff area and raised Angus cattle until his failing health caused him to retire in 1999. Frank has been living at the Waterford in Bismarck for the past two years.

Frank was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was also known for his excellent carpenter and craftsman skills. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He was also known for his quick wit and sense of humor.

He is survived by his brother, John, McLaughlin, SD; many nieces and nephews, Patty Schmidt, Renton, WA, Joni Higa, Seattle, WA, Jeannie Heick, Bismarck, ND, Winetta Bender, Billings, MT, Francine McKeaney, Glasglow, Scotland, Gary Schreiner, Huff, ND, Karen Miller, Mandan, ND, Monte Leidenix, Michelle Leidenix Botner and Kristie Becker, all of Bismarck, ND, Michael Hilfer and Judy Twaddle, both from Renton, WA, James Hilfer, Kent, WA, and Jeannette Ash, Renton, WA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and three sisters, Irene Gill, Mary Schreiner, and Elsie Hilfer.
