Rance Lon Fretland
The world lost an intelligent, interesting and unique man on May 24, 2006.
Rance Lon Fretland, 47, passed away after an extended illness. Rance was born January 11, 1959 in Stanley, ND. By his first birthday he was a resident of Washington, residing in Seattle, Bellevue, Snohomish, and Everett. He graduated from Snohomish High School in 1977, and obtained a MA from Harding University in Searcy, AR. He and his wife Nancy (Hamel) served as missionaries in Haiti until political turmoil forced them to return to the USA. He was a long-term employee of Snohomish County, working in management for the Finance department.
He enjoyed hiking, bowling, biking, camping, horticulture, gourmet cooking (and eating!), reading extensively and always researching. Above all, he enjoyed the time he had with his daughter Amanda, the light of his life. He was a wonderful devoted father. They spent many weekends together enjoying these activities and others, and just being together. Rance took special care to make holidays special for his daughter, baking her birthday cakes, filling stockings, creating Easter baskets, and was in the midst of planning a vacation to Disney World with her when he passed away. Amanda was equally devoted to Rance, taking care of him during his illness and was always patient and loving toward him.
Rance will be greatly missed by his surviving family. He had a terrific odd sense of humor, original ideas, eclectic taste, and fastidiousness. He always looked at things from many angles, and yet was down to earth and respectful of peoples’ opinion. He was a "real" person.
Rance is survived by his daughter Amanda Nicole Fretland, 17; his parents Ron and Ruth Ann Fretland, of Snohomish, WA; his brother Randy Fretland (wife Heidi, daughters Emily and Jenny) of Everett,WA; brother Roland Fretland (children Rory, Laurel, Hillary and Kara, and their mother Tanya) of Snohomish, WA; sister Ronna DeLaVergne (husband Keith, son Cameron Opitz, daughter-in-law Jessica, and Danielle DeLaVergne, daughter of Keith) of Everett, WA; and grandparents Al and Edna Payne of Bothell, WA. He also has many, many aunts, uncles, cousins, and good friends who will miss him tremendously.
A memorial program will be held Thursday, June 1st at 3:30 p.m. in the Monte Cristo Hotel Ballroom, 1507 Wall Street, Everett, WA.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Heifer International, www.heifer.org, Rance’s favorite organization. Also, a fund has been established at Bank of America, the Amanda Fretland College Fund.
