Marie E. Johner, 89, of Minot, formerly of Towner died Thursday, October 12, 2006, at Trinity Medical Center in Minot, North Dakota.
Marie Edna (Christiansen) Johner was born on August 29, 1917 to Edna (Nelson) and Hans Christiansen in Ryder, North Dakota. Marie graduated as Valedictorian of her class at Ryder HS in 1935 and completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in Education at Minot State Teachers College in 1940. While she was in high school and college, Marie spent her summers working on the family farm. During her college years, she lived with and worked for several Minot families in the Eastwood Park area of Minot to earn her room, board and college tuition.
Marie began her teaching career at Kief High School. During the war years, she taught in Pembina High School and also coordinated the “Victory Garden” project in Pembina, ND. She moved to Towner, ND in 1945 to teach high school English. It was there that she met and married
Peter Johner. Marie and Peter were married
at St. Cecilia’s Church on July 21, 1947. From 1948 to 1956, Marie discontinued teaching to raise their four children. Peter and Marie owned and operated Johner’s Cafe in Towner together with Peter’s mother, Elizabeth and his brother, Carl. Marie went back to teaching English at Berwick High School in 1956-57 and finally returned to teaching at Towner High School from 1966 until her retirement in 1980.
As a high school English, Speech and Drama Teacher, Marie held offices in many professional organizations including PTA, Towner Education Association, and ND Council for Teachers of English Executive Board, Curriculum Development Chairman, and Delegate to the National Convention of English Teachers, NCA School Evaluation Team member, Chairperson of County Speech Contests and of Bicentennial Speech Events. During her teaching career, Marie was named Outstanding Secondary Educator, Teacher of the Year for the Towner Education Association, and Honorary Alumna of Towner High School.
Marie was very involved in the community of Towner serving as President of the American Legion Auxiliary and VFW Auxiliary President. Marie was also an active member of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Parish serving as Church Choir director, Secretary of the Christian Mothers Society, Secretary of the
Church Council and teacher of catechism and confirmation.
Marie’s husband Peter passed away in 1991 and her life took a new direction. She joined the Towner Senior Citizens club and learned to write grant applications to help fund this organization. Marie learned to operate a computer and began teaching computer class to her fellow senior citizens in Towner. She took up oil painting and continued crocheting quilts for her many new baby grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an active member of Beginning Experience, Delta Kappa Gamma, Darners Club and Homemakers Club where she shared many happy hours with dear friends.
In 2002, Marie moved to an apartment in Minot where she was able to spend time with her son Harlan and where she continued her community involvement. She moved into Edgewood Vista assisted living in 2004. While at Edgewood Vista, she coordinated the Catholic Catechism study group, participated in many programs as a reader or emcee and was named President of the Resident’s Council, a position she held at the time of her death. Although her frail Danish body failed her, Marie kept her mind active by reading a book a week, doing crossword puzzles daily, writing and editing her autobiography, and searching the internet for humorous or inspirational stories she could share with her fellow residents and staff at Edgewood Vista.
