Roger Otteson

Roger James Otteson, 55, Ryder, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2006, in a Minot hospital after a courageous battle with lung cancer.
Roger was born on Oct. 15, 1950, to Olav and Agnes (Gustafson) Otteson, in Minot. He was raised in Berthold and Ryder. Roger attended the Ryder Public School.
As a young adult, Roger helped many farmers in the Ryder area before starting employment at Great Plains in Ryder. He was united in marriage on Feb. 17, 1971, to Marlene Mead in Minot. He entered the North Dakota National Guard and received an honorable discharge in November 1976. Roger began working for Ryder Farmers Union Oil in 1972 and later became manager in 1990.
Roger was always “on the go” and after a full day of work he could be found still helping farmers combine or whatever needed to be done. Roger was a member of the Ryder Presbyterian Church in Ryder, American Legion Post 99, served as a board member for the Ryder Credit Union and was very active in the Makoti Threshing Show. Rogerís favorite pastime was working in his garage and sharing time with his buddy, Harlan Skarphol, restoring old tractors. After a fresh snowfall, he could always be found pushing snow to open the roads around town and made sure the church parking lots were open.
Roger always had time to visit with family and friends. They all meant the world to him.
Roger is survived by his wife of 35 years, Marlene; three daughters, Melissa (Jay) Hansen of Ryder, Shelly (Rick) Sherven of Parshall, Angie (BJ) Lafreniere of Cottage Grove, Minn.; five grandsons, Jayden, Blane, Blake, Coltyn and Hunter; two brothers; one sister; numerous nieces and nephews; his dogs, Charlie and Suzie, and his cows!!
He was preceded in death by his parents and infant brother.
Funeral service: Monday, Oct. 9, 2006, at 2:30 p.m. in Lewis and Clark North Shore Elementary School Auditorium, Ryder.
Interment: Rosehill Cemetery, Ryder.
Visitation: Today from noon to 5 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Raynold Johnson
Sept. 24, 1923-Oct. 3, 2006
Raynold P. Johnson, 83, Plaza, died Tuesday, October 3, 2006 in a Minot hospital.
Ray was born September 24, 1923 in Stanley, ND the son of Palmer and Mabel (Belseth) Johnson. He was raised on the family farm south of Palermo and attended the Diamond School and Palermo High School.
On June 20, 1942 he was united in marriage to Eva Myhre in Sidney, MT. They made their home in Plaza and many other communities in North Dakota while Ray operated heavy equipment on construction crews. In 1960 they settled in Plaza where they continued to raise their family. For a time he transported ice, for the railroad, from rivers and lakes throughout North Dakota and Minnesota as well as continuing construction work. When Eva died on May 15, 1989 he continued to make Plaza his home.
Following his retirement in 1990 Ray kept busy helping with farm work, hauling water with friends, working in his yard, plowing snow or tinkering with whatever needed fixing. He enjoyed spending time with his family and socializing with friends. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Plaza.
Ray is survived by his sons, Ronald (Mary) of Williston, Keith of Parshall, Timothy (Jimi) of Huntsville, AL, Paul (Carol) of Mandan and Barry of Plaza; daughter, Kathy Findlay (Jerry) of Sidney, MT; brother, Marvin (Geraine) of Stanley; sisters, Carol Nichols of Seattle, WA, and Beverly Ward (Duane) of Minot; 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brothers, Odin, Selmer and Gene; sister, Ethel Dzuber; daughter-in-law, Vicky and granddaughter, Candace.
Funeral: Saturday, October 7, 2006 at 1 p.m. in First Lutheran Church, Plaza.
Visitation: Friday (today) from noon to 5 p.m. in Langhans Funeral Home, Parshall.
Interment: East Plaza Cemetery, Plaza, ND.

EDGEWOOD, N.M. – Jeffrey Lynn Rogers, 49, Tijeras, N.M., formerly of Minot, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2006, in his home.
He was born Feb. 17, 1957, in Minot. He was once married
to Lola Leggett. He married
Gaye Sanders Nov. 23, 2005, in Tijeras.

Ila Thomas

CANDO – Ila Jean Thomas, 76, Moorhead, Minn., formerly of the Cando and Devils Lake areas, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006, in a Moorhead nursing home.
She was born April 16, 1930, to Clate and Jane York, near Perth. She married
Leo Thomas Sept. 1, 1949, in Hansboro.
Survivors: sons, David and Steven, both Fargo; daughter, Lee Ann LaFrance, Federal Heights, Colo.; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren.
Funeral: Friday at 1 p.m. in Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home, Cando.
Burial: Hansboro Cemetery, Hansboro.
Vigil service: Thursday at 7 p.m. in the funeral home.
Visitation: Thursday from 5 p.m. until the vigil service in the funeral home.
Phyllis Engleson
Jan. 19, 1934-Oct. 13, 2006
Phyllis Engleson, 72, Fargo, passed away Friday, October 13, 2006 in her home under the care of her loving husband.
Phyllis Ann Welsh, mother, wife, friend, was born on January 19, 1934 to George Welsh and Emily (Kelly) Welsh in Watertown, SD. Phyllis graduated from Willmar High School and attended St. Cloud State to obtain her teaching certificate.
She married
Russel (Rod) Engleson on August 24, 1954 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Willmar, MN. After a year of teaching at Lake Owasso Elementary School in North St. Paul, they moved back to Willmar to start their family. In 1972, while raising their family of then six children, Phyllis completed her teaching degree. Two years later they moved to Minot, ND and in 1986 she and Rod relocated to Fargo, ND. Phyllis was very active in the church and communities in which they lived, volunteering much of her free time to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Willmar, Our Lady of Grace in Minot, and Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Fargo. Phyllis enjoyed sewing, bridge and the fellowship at the Fargo YMCA.
She is survived by her husband, Russel (Rod); children: Michael J. Engleson, Eureka, CA, Roderic F. (Peggy) Engleson, Minot, ND, Timothy J. (Charlotte) Engleson, Eureka, MT, Jeffery A. (Lori) Engleson, Bismarck, ND, Mary P. Engleson (Charles Fatoma), Prague, Czech Republic, Emily K. (Dale) Trautmann Fargo, ND, and Paul T. (Julie) Engleson, Inver Grove Heights, MN; 12 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; her siblings, Patricia Lumsden, La Grande, OR, Norbert (Marilyn) Welsh, Coon Rapids, MN, Dennis (Sandie) Welsh, Mequon, WI, Kathryn (George) May, Mendota Heights, MN.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings Jim Welsh, George Welsh, Jean Klint, and Lois Condon.
