Vernon Gerig Jr.

FARGO – Vernon Roy Gerig Jr., 70, Brinsmade, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2006, in a Fargo hospital.

He was born July 13, 1936, to Hazel and Vernon Gerig Sr. in Benson County. He married Esther Shambach Feb. 5, 1953, in Brinsmade.

Survivors: wife; son, Ron, Holland, Mich.; daughters, Ginger Kallander, Moorhead, Minn., Lorrie Hylden, Park River, Julie Tollefson, Fargo; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, David, Napa, Calif.

Funeral: Saturday at 11 a.m. in Calvary Baptist Church, Fargo.

Burial: Brinsmade Lutheran Cemetery, Brinsmade.

Prayer service: Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.

Visitation: Friday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.

Leona Saugstad

Dec. 9, 1918-Oct. 9, 2006

Leona Saugstad, 87, of Logan, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2006, in her home.

Leona Friesen was born Dec. 9, 1918, near Wolf Point, Mont., to Diedrick and Sarah (Ratzlaff) Friesen. She moved with her family to Minot in 1923, where she was raised and educated. Leona graduated from Minot High School in 1936 and from Minot State Teachers College in 1938. She taught school in the Bell School District in Minot, and later in Des Lacs.

Leona was united in marriage to Dale Saugstad on June 24, 1944, at Congregational United Church of Christ in Minot. They made their home on the Saugstad family farm located near Logan. Leona remained active in the school system serving as a substitute teacher for a number of years. Yet, her largest duties were raising their four children and helping out on the farm, occasionally milking a cow or two in Dale’s absence.

In her spare time, Leona was involved in many interests and hobbies. She could be found in her garden, working with arts and crafts, quilt making or sewing. Leona was a charter member of the Valley Homemakers Club. She will be dearly missed by all who shared in her life.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Dale, of Logan; daughters, Mary (William) Hutter, Park Rapids, Minn., Kathryn Saugstad, Orlando, Fla., and Rita (David) Parker, Cando; son, Harley Saugstad, of Logan; special niece and caregiver, Garnet Baker, of Logan; eight grandchildren, Cyndi, Shannon, Kate, Lane, Aaron, Joseph, Jenna and Sarah; four great-grandchildren, Ciara, Sean, Abigail and Olivia; sister, Luana Welch, Wenatchee, Wash.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Leona was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Leonard and Leland Freisen.

Funeral: Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006, at 1:30 p.m. at River of Life Assembly of God, Minot.

Interment: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.

Visitation: Wednesday (today) from 2 until 7 p.m. at the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.

Angelette Bakken

Jan. 2, 1912-Oct. 1, 2006

Angelette G. Bakken, 94, Minot, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2006, in a Minot nursing home.

Angelette Roe was born on Jan. 2, 1912, the daughter of Alvin and Esther (Lindberg) Roe, in Anamoose. She was reared on the family farm, where she received her work ethic, and was educated in the Anamoose area, graduating from Anamoose High School. She furthered her education at the Minot State Teachers College, receiving her standard teachers certificate. She taught in rural schools in the Anamoose/Guthrie areas for a time.

On June 30, 1937, she was united in marriage to Lawrence S. Bakken in Drake. Lawrence began a career with the Great Northern Railroad which prompted them to move to Minot. At this time she returned to college receiving a bachelor’s degree from Minot State College.

Angelette taught first grade in Nedrose Public School until her retirement at the age of 65. She truly loved being a teacher, and her greatest joy post-retirement was visiting with former students who she would see on various occasions.

Following retirement, the couple stayed in the Minot area. They enjoyed traveling to North Carolina to visit their daughter. Lawrence died May 14, 1993. Following his death, she continued to live in the Minot area until entering ManorCare in October 2004, where she resided at the time of her death.

She was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Minot. She enjoyed gardening, watching movies and going for her daily walk. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was always willing to help others before herself. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew her.

She is survived by: son, Dr. Brent (Barbara) Bakken, Beaverton, Ore.; daughter, Gay Murray, Charlotte, N.C.; four grandchildren, Rebecca Bakken, Patrick Murray, Melody Murray and Matthew Murray; one great-granddaughter, Natalie Murray; sister, Lucille Hanneberg, Drake.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers Stanford and Leo; and sister, Geraldine.

Funeral: Monday, Oct. 16, 2006, at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, Minot.

Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.

Visitation: Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006, from noon until 5 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers a donation to The Patrons of Minot Public Library In Memory of Angelette Bakken. 516 2nd Ave SW, Minot, ND 58701.

Greig Markwart

April 10, 1957-Oct. 3, 2006

BOWDON – Greig Wesley Markwart, 49, Evansville, Wis., formerly of Bowdon, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006, in his home.

He was born April 10, 1957, to Wesley and Caroline Markwart in Harvey.

Survivors: parents, of Bowdon; brothers, Gary, Bismarck, Glenn, Brodhead, Wis.

Funeral: Monday at 10:30 a.m., in Bowdon Lutheran Church.

Burial: Wayside Cemetery, Bowdon.

Prayer service: Sunday at 7 p.m., in Nelson Funeral Home in Fessenden.

Visitation: Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m., in the funeral home.

Orell LaHaise

Oct. 28, 1917-Oct. 13, 2006

WASHBURN – Orell LaHaise, 88, Underwood, formerly of Wilton, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2006, in an Underwood nursing home.

He was born Oct. 28, 1917, to Joseph and Rosanna LaHaise in Walsh County.

Survivor: cousin, Marvin Sevigny, Hazen.

Graveside service: Tuesday at 10:15 a.m. at Riverview Cemetery, Washburn.

Visitation: Tuesday from 9 to 10 a.m. in Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn.
