Karen Marohl
Karen Marohl, 62 of rural Lidgerwood, ND passed away Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at her home. Funeral services will be Saturday, November 6, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Lidgerwood, ND with Pastor Douglas Wanderer officiating and burial will be at Immanuel Cemetery, rural Lidgerwood. Visitation will be Friday, November 5, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. all at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Lidgerwood. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers are: Clint Arndt, James Marohl, Dalton Herding, Dennis Orth, Kelsey McGarry, Brian Ivey, Paul Grohnke & Gary Marohl, Jr. Honorary pallbearers are: All Her Friends". Organist will be Edwin Arndt, Jr. with special music by Sarah Marohl.
Karen Judith Marohl was born August 5, 1948 in Breckenridge, MN, the daughter of Albert & Judith (Hill) Baumann. She was baptized on August 29, 1948 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church by Rev. Karl Reuter and confirmed at Holy Cross on April 15, 1962 by Rev. H.C. Mueller. She attended country school, Veblen High School for 1 year and then attended Lidgerwood High School, where she graduated. She lived with her grandmother while she attended school in Lidgerwood. After graduation she attended NDSSS, Wahpeton, ND. After school she worked at St. Ansgar in Moorhead, MN until 1969. On April 26, 1969 she was united in marriage to Robert Marohl at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Lidgerwood by Pastor R.C. Gauger. After their marriage she traveled on the road with her husband until 1995 when they returned to the farm south of Lidgerwood where they have lived since.
Karen enjoyed gardening, canning, baking, sewing, mowing lawn and playing with her grandchildren. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and LWML.
She is survived by her husband: Robert Marohl, Lidgerwood, ND; son: Adam (Nikki) Marohl, Wahpeton, ND; daughter: Abigail (Roark) Franklund, Katy, TX; mother: Judith Baumann, Aberdeen, SD; sisters: Sandie (Clifford) MacConnell, Lidgerwood, ND, Cathy (Dennis) McGarry, Aberdeen, SD & Linda Ivey, Aberdeen, SD; 2 grandchildren: Reece Franklund & Caden Marohl.
She is preceded in death by her father: Albert Baumann and brother: Leo Baumann.
Wally W. Milbrandt
Wally W. Milbrandt (71) of Hankinson, ND passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at Essentia Health in Fargo, ND. Funeral Services will be Monday, June 23rd at 11:00 am at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Hankinson, ND with Pastor Adam Moline officiating. Burial will be at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Hankinson. Visitation will be Sunday, June 22nd starting at 4pm with a prayer service at 6pm all at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Hankinson. There will also be a visitation one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church. Pallbearers will be his nephews, Wayne Hartleben, Kevin Medenwald, Tim Medenwald, Todd Buck, Jamie Milbrandt, a very special friend, Fred Wallock, and a special neighbor, Stuart Strege. Honorary pallbearers are his grandchildren and great grandchildren who were so, so special to him.
Wally was born April 25, 1943 in Veblen, SD, the son of Elroy & Ann (Hrdlicka) Milbrandt. He was baptized on May 23, 1943 and confirmed on April 14, 1957 both at Emmanuel United Church of Christ, Hankinson. He grew up on a farm southwest of Hankinson, attending school in Hankinson and graduating from Hankinson High School in 1961, where he also was very involved in athletics.
Wally married
DiAnn (Buck) on August 11, 1962 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hankinson. Wally worked for Elroy Muehler’s Turkey Farm, Cargill, Fenske Feed & Grain, Hankinson Lumber, and in 1983 managed Don’s Hardware until 1992 when he and DiAnn purchased the store. Wally loved his “Wally’s Trustworthy Hardware” store. He thoroughly enjoyed helping his customers, enjoying visiting with everyone who walked through the doors, and loved shaking dice for a bottle of pop. Retiring in 2010 was very hard, but soon found out retirement meant spending much, much more time with his wonderful family.
Wally enjoyed hunting (especially with his boys) and was an avid sports fan and player. He loved cheering for the Twins and his beloved Dallas Cowboys. Wally is well known statewide by many, often being called the “best third baseman ever”. He and his brother, Larry, were known as the “M&M Boys” with Wally on third base and Larry on first. He was very, very proud playing on “his” team especially the famous Dick’s Bar team that won 3 state championships, participated in three regional and one national tournament. He was proud of being named “Most Valuable Player” at the Rob Markuson Memorial Tournament in Valley City that boasted 27 different teams. His most cherished accomplishment was being inducted into the North Dakota Softball Hall of Fame in 1994, joining his brother, Larry, who was inducted two years prior. He really beamed when he was able to play on a team with his sons, Scott and Tom. Wally retired from his favorite sport when he reached 60 years of age.
Wally is survived by his wife, DiAnn, of 511/2 years; Daughter, Lori (Scott) Althoff, Pasco, WA; Son, Scott (Vicki) Milbrandt, Kindred, ND; Daughter, Stacy (Dale) Boyer, Savage, MN; Son, Thomas (Amy) Milbrandt, Tower City, ND. Eight grandchildren, Whitney (Matt) Arnold, Austin Althoff, Nicholas & Paige Milbrandt, Krissy (Eric) Wasness, Nic Boyer, Annabelle & Brynleigh Milbrandt. Three great-grandchildren, Caleb & Kinsley Arnold and Oliver Wasness. Brother, Larry (Joyce) Milbrandt, Hankinson, ND; Sister, Shirley (LeRoy) Hartleben, Ely, MN. Sister-in-law, Janice (Dale) Medenwald, Wahpeton, ND; Sister-in-law, Marcy Buck, Fairmount, ND. Numerous nieces and nephews.
Wally was preceded in death by his parents, Elroy and Ann, his mother & father-in-law, Clemens & Amanda Buck, brother-in-law Mervin Buck, and an infant brother.

Nick Allen Lyons
Nick Allen Lyons, 25 of Lidgerwood, ND passed away Friday, May 10, 2013 at his home in Lidgerwood. Funeral services will be Thursday, May 16, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Frank Family Funeral Home in Lidgerwood, ND and burial in Holy Cross Lutheran Cemetery, Lidgerwood. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 8:00 p.m. at the Frank Funeral Home and also Thursday morning one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Lunch will be served at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Lidgerwood following the burial.
Nick Allen Lyons was born on December 2, 1987 in Breckenridge, MN, the son of Sandy Boutain. He attended Lidgerwood Public School and graduated in 2006. He resided in Lidgerwood where he pursued a career in farming with his grandparents Lester and Jackie Lyons& uncle for many years.
Nick lived life to the fullest. He enjoyed fishing, snowmobiling, riding ATV and summers at the lakes with his family and friends.
His new love was becoming a father to his daughter Aleigha Ann Lyons, his “Pride & Joy”.
Nick is survived by his daughter: Aleigha Ann Lyons, mother: Sandy Boutain, Wahpeton, ND, fiancée: Grace Shepersky, Lidgerwood, ND, brother: Ryan (Rachel Matilton) Boutain, nephew: Rylan Jay Boutain & niece: Taylor Matilton, all of West Fargo, ND, grandparents: Lester & Jackie Lyons, Lidgerwood, ND and many cousins, aunts& uncles.
Eleanor Berndt, 92
Eleanor Berndt, 92, Lidgerwood, N.D., died Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011 at St. Francis Nursing Home in Breckenridge, Minn.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19, 2011 at Bergen Lutheran Church in Lidgerwood, with the Rev. Michael Ward officiating. Inurnment will be at Pleasantview Cemetery, Lidgerwood. Special music by Curt Brownlee.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
Eleanor Augusta Krueger was born Jan. 24, 1919 in Cooperstown, N.D., the daughter of William E. and Martha (Bahls) Krueger.
On July 8, 1940 she was united in marriage to Chris Berndt in Moorhead, Minn. Chris and Eleanor met while both were working on a large farm near Sabin, Minn. After their marriage, they farmed near Hankinson, N.D., for seven years. They moved to a farm north of Geneseo, N.D., in 1947 and farmed there until retiring to Lidgerwood in 1979.
Chris and Eleanor enjoyed square dancing and card parties. They were members of the Lidgerwood United Methodist Church since 1948 and Eleanor served the Lord by being an active member of UMW, where she was a past president, taught Sunday school and was a caretaker of the church.
Chris passed away Dec. 12, 1993 and Eleanor continued to live in their home until she moved to Dakota Estates in 2001. In 2010 Eleanor became a resident of St. Francis Healthcare and continued to reside there until her death.
She enjoyed playing cards, sewing, baking, gardening, canning and visiting her friends and family members. Eleanor is lovingly remembered for her baked chicken, egg coffee, Christmas gifts and crocheted kitchen towels. She was also a member of the Dexter Homemakers Club.
Eleanor is survived by sons: Dewey (Judy) Berndt, Post Falls, Idaho, Allen (Michele) Berndt, Cayuga, N.D., and Jim (Vickie) Berndt, Cayuga; brother, Wilbert Krueger, Texas; sisters: Clara Johnson, Pelican Rapids, Minn., Noreen Huwe, Casselton, N.D., and Marcella Huwe, Franklin, Minn.; grandchildren: Carl (Genie) Riegert, Mike (Michele) Berndt, Renee (Bob) Cook, Stacy (Nathan) Brandt, Travis (Alecia) Berndt, Kristi (Derek) Claeys and Scott (Shannon) Berndt; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Martha Krueger; her husband, Chris M. Berndt; brothers, Wilfred and Willard Krueger; sisters, Gladys Soland, Ann Berndt, Ruby Seeke; and her half-sister, Adelyne Dulski.
Frank Family Funeral Home in Lidgerwood is in charge of the arrangements.
Dan C. Meyer, 53
Dan C. Meyer, 53, Wahpeton, N.D., died Monday, Oct. 24, 2011 at his residence.
The funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 28 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Breckenridge, Minn., with the Rev. Kenneth Popp as celebrant. Burial will be at Fairview Memorial Gardens, Wahpeton.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, 2011 with a 7 p.m. prayer vigil at Willow Creek Chapel, Wahpeton.
Dan was born July 2, 1958 in Olathe, Kan. He was raised in Breckenridge by his parents, Charles and Carol Meyer, and attended Breckenridge High School, where he participated in all sports and most enjoyed basketball.
Dan worked for Walton Farms in Brookings, S.D., after his schooling.
Dan was united in marriage to Mary Beth Allmaras Oct. 12, 1979 at the Newman Center in Wahpeton. They lived in Grafton, N.D., where he worked for Swanson Farms. In 1986, they moved back to Wahpeton where Dan worked with his father at Meyer’s Elevator Repair, working on grain elevators. In 1988, Dan started working for Ro-Banks (now known as Flex TM) in Wahpeton, where he was currently working. Mary passed away on Jan. 6, 2008 and Dan continued to live in Wahpeton.
Dan’s main enjoyment in life was following his two sons in their activities, including football and wrestling. Everyone who met Dan loved him and he will be greatly missed.
Dan is survived by his sons, Danny (Elizabeth Freden) Meyer and Jeff Meyer, both from Fargo, N.D.; his granddaughter, Harper; his mother, Carol Meyer, Breckenridge; his siblings, Mike (Patty) Meyer, Perham, Minn., Theresa Arend, Ashby, Minn., Donna (John) Salvevold, Battle Lake, Minn., Dallas (Kristi) Meyer, Ottertail, Minn., April Meyer, Breckenridge.; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Tom and Irene Allmaras, Sun City, Ariz.; his many nieces and nephews; and his special dog, Eddy.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Beth Meyer; his father, Charles Meyer; and his two nephews, Ryan and Riley.
Memorials are preferred In lieu of flowers.

Mercedes Morris, 96
Mercedes Morris, 96, Wahpeton, N.D., passed away Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2011 at her residence.
The funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 31, 2011 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Wahpeton with her nephew, the Rev. James Radde, S.J. as celebrant. Interment
will be at Calvary Cemetery, Wahpeton.
Visitation will be held at 6:30 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 30, 2011 at Willow Creek Chapel, Wahpeton with sharing of stories from 7-9 p.m. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the service at the church.
Mercedes Rosalind Morris was born Jan. 29, 1915 in the original J.E. Morris residence in Wahpeton, where she lived her entire life. Mercedes attended Wahpeton Public grade school, St. John’s School, and was the only student in her class at Wahpeton High School to graduate with a classical diploma. She attended what was then North Dakota State School of Science but went on to North Dakota State University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in languages, English and political science. At NDSU she was a member of the Alpha Omicron chapter of Gamma Phi Beta sorority. Later she returned to NDSU and received a master’s degree in administration and student personnel. She did additional graduate studies at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
Mercedes was a student at NDSU, then the “AC, ” in 1937 when that institution lost its accreditation. She was one of the “Committee of Eleven, ” a group of students who organized themselves, campaigned around the state and succeeded in having a bill passed which mandated the establishment of the North Dakota Board of Higher Education. As a result of their initiative the school eventually regained its accreditation.
In 1978 NDSU bestowed on Mercedes the Alumni Achievement Award.
In 1941 Mercedes’ sister, Marcella Morris Radde, White Rock, S.D., died leaving two boys, Paul and Jim. She and her sister, Geraldine, took them into their home and raised them.
During World War II Ms. Morris became active with the American Red Cross. She was a home service chairperson and college representative throughout a 10-year period. Mercedes was a leader for the Girl Scouts. She served on the USO board in Wahpeton for eight years. During this time she also helped the war effort by harvesting with a team of horses on a family farm.
Mercedes began her teaching career at North Dakota State College of Science in 1942 in English and business. In 1958 she became Dean of Women and Director of Women’s Housing. When she retired in 1985 she was Associate Dean of Students, Director of Student Development and Adviser to foreign students.
She was named 1985 NDSCS Wildcat of the Year. In 1990 Ms. Morris was NDSCS Alumna of the Year. More recently, in 2008, she was named a Dean Emerita.
Mercedes actively engaged in numerous educational organizations at the state and local levels. She served as state president of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), president of its Wahpeton branch and as the state representative for the AAUW at the United Nations Environmental Conference in New York.
Mercedes was elected president of the North Dakota Association of Women Deans and served as vice-president and secretary of the North Dakota Association of Personnel Deans. Mercedes held charter membership and served as first president of Eta chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international fraternity for women educators. For many years she served on the Board of Regents at the University of Mary in Bismarck.
Through the years Mercedes traveled widely in Europe with her sister Geraldine.
Mercedes was on the committee which oversaw the renovation of St. Francis Medical Center and served on its Ethics Committee. In 1989 she helped plan the North Dakota Centennial celebration for Richland County.
Throughout her life Mercedes supported the arts. She was the Upper Midwest chairperson for the Metropolitan Opera. She also served on the North Dakota Committee for the Humanities and Public Issues and, for eight years, on the Board of Directors of Prairie Public Television. Mercedes participated in the Plains Art Museum Council and in the President’s Council which planned the Ella Stern and Harry Stern Cultural Center at NDSCS. She was a charter member of the Friends of the Library and of the Twin Towns concert series.
Mercedes Morris was the youngest daughter of the late John Elmer and Mary Simonitsch Morris.
She is survived by: her nephews, Dr. Paul O. Radde, Ph.D., Longmont, Colo., and Fr. James M. Radde, S.J., St. Paul, Minn.; Coleman Morris, Jr, Wahpeton and Mesa, Ariz.; and 17 more nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her nine siblings: Marcella Morris Radde, White Rock, S.D., Ethel Morris Lunday, Towner, N.D., Florence, Clarence, Francis, Norbert, Coleman, Angela and Geraldine Morris all of Wahpeton.
Memorials are preferred to Carmel of Mary Monastery, Wahpeton.
