Margaret Hennessy, 80

Margaret Hennessy, 80, of Billings, Mt., died Monday, Dec. 25, in Billings. Her funeral was Friday, Dec. 29 in Little Flower Catholic Church, with burial in Holy Cross Cemetery, both Billings.
She was born Oct. 1, 1920, in Tagus. She grew up in Tagus. She graduated from Tagus High School in 1938 and worked at Ellison's Department Store in Minot.
She married Leon Hennessy April 21, 1949, in Minot. They moved to Malta, Mt., in 1950 and to Billings in 1961. Her husband preceded her in death.
She was active in the Church of the Little Flower and in the Senior Citizens, both Billings.
Survivors: daughters, Sue Wood, Beth Hennessy, Bonnie Hennessy, Sally Hennessy, Mary Miner and Kathy Flodin; sons, Pat, Mike and Tom 11 grandchildren; sisters, Stella, Donna, Dorothy and Patsy; brother, Howard.

Wayne Evans, 89

Wayne H. Evans, 89, of Stanley, died Sunday, Dec. 24, in a Stanley medical center. His funeral was Friday, Dec. 29, in New Town Baptist Fellowship, with burial in Riverview Cemetery, both New Town.
Officiating - Rev. Vince Dicks and Lynn Paulson; with special music by grandchildren and congregation; Janette Severance, organist and Elana Anderson, pianist. Pallbearers were Dan Kannianen, Dan Uran, Bill Whitmore, Carl Kannianen, Keith Uran and David Enander.
He was born Jan. 8, 1911, in Huron, S.D. He moved with his family to a homestead in Brookbank Township, Mountrail County, when he was an infant. He attended county school and high school in Van Hook. He worked on the West Coast and also in Montana during the Great Depression.
He married Hazel Satterthwaite April 21, 1934, in Stanley. They lived in Montana for a time and then returned to North Dakota, where he started ranching in the valley of the Little Knife River. They raised Hereford cattle until 1993, when they retired and moved to Stanley. His wife died in May 2000.
He was a member of New Town Baptist Fellowship. He had served one term in the Silver Haired Legislature and had worked with the N.D. Archaeological Society.
Survivors: son, Fred of Stanley; daughters, Ann Davis of Poplarville, Ms., Janis Patrick and Velma Lou Marmon, both Stanley; Cathie Kraft of Bridger, Mt.; 18 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

Peter Deane, 73

Peter Deane, 73, of New Town, died Friday, Dec. 22, in a Bismarck hospital. His funeral was Wednesday, Dec. 27 in St. Anthony's Catholic Church of New Town, with burial in the Packineau Dam Cemetery, White Shield.
He was born May 28, 1927, in Elbowoods to Stanley and Margaret Deane. He left home at age 16 and worked at various jobs including working for Great Northern Railroad in Minot. He later moved to Butte, Mt.
He married Carmen Horse Capture in the late 1940s. He then worked as a hard rock miner. He moved to the Bay area in California in 1959, where he worked for Fisher Body for many years. They lived ion Virginia when he worked on constructing the Metro subway in Washington, D.C. He later worked for Coalstrip Electric Generating Plant in the early 1970s. They retired in New Town in 1983. She died in 1988.
He married Iva Good Bird Oct. 16, 1989. He later worked part-time at the Casino in New Town.
He was of the Catholic faith. He had attended many Pow-Wows through the years.
Survivors: wife; two step-daughters; two step-sons; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Erling LeHolm, 90

Erling LeHolm, 90, of Layton, Ut., died Thursday, Dec. 21, at Rocky Mountain Care Center. His funeral was Wednesday, Dec. 27, at the Valley View 9th Ward Church, with interment in Lindquist's Memorial Park at Layton.
He was born Nov. 22, 1910, in Pleasant Valley, N.D. to John and Karen (Nordness) LeHolm.
He married Marie Waldram on November 17,1949, in Salt Lake LDS Temple. She passed away January 24,1981. He married Larna Hamblin June 9, 1984 in Salt Lake LDS Temple.
He was a member of the LDS Church. He was an Elder and visiting teacher in the Valley View 9th Ward. He was involved in Little League and Scouting. He served in the Army in World War II.
Survivors: wife; sons, Gary LeHolm of Bluffton, S.C., Robert LeHolm of San Diego, Ca., Thomas LeHolm of Sandy, Rodney Wardle of Manrua, Richard Wardle of Tremonton, Elwin Wardle of Deweyville and Keith Wardle of Layton; daughters, Dorothy Richardson, Linda Thompson and Laura Moon of Layton; 32 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; sister Astrid Olsen of Bismarck.
He was preceded in death by seven brothers, two sisters and two grandsons.

Glenn Larson, 79

Glenn "L.G." Larson, 79, of New Town, died Tuesday, Dec. 26, in a New Town nursing home. His funeral was Saturday, Dec. 30, in Bethel Lutheran Church of New Town, with burial in the New Town Cemetery.
He was born Jan. 13, 1921, in Sanish to Lewis and Alice Larson. He was raised and attended school there. He worked for a rancher in the Killdeer Mountains near Killdeer for a few years. He entered the Navy Feb. 23, 1944, and was discharged April 29, 1946.
He married Joyce Turner Oct. 24, 1947, in rural Van Hook. They lived and farmed at the Larson farm south of Sanish until 1988. He also worked for Aubol's Inc. in New Town for many winners. They moved to New Town in 1989 and he moved to the New Town Nursing Home in 1995. He has had Alzheimer's disease for the past few years.
He served on the boards of Big Bend Township, Farmers Union Elevator and Station, the New Town Nursing Home and Bethel Lutheran Church, all New Town. He was a member of the Minot Elks Lodge, Eagles Aerie and Moose Lodge and a member of the New Town American Legion. He received his 50-year Legion pin and helped perform many military rites.
Survivors: wife; brothers, Eugene and Dennis, both of Eugene, Or. and Jack of Fairbanks, Ak.; sister, Cleo Alm of Bend, Or.

Jefferson Smith, Jr. 68

Jefferson B. Smith Jr., "Buffalo Bullcalf", 68, of New Town, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, in a Parshall nursing home. His funeral was Saturday, Dec. 30, in the 4 Bears Community Center, rural New Town, with burial in the Congregational Memorial Cemetery, south of Parshall.
He was born Jan. 3, 1932, to Ruth and Jefferson Smith Sr. in Elbowoods, where he was raised and educated. As a young man, he ranched for his mother. He enlisted in the Army in 1948 and served in Germany and Korea. He was discharged in 1952. He returned to the Fort Berthold Reservation and began his career in road construction as a heavy equipment operator. In his later years, he worked as a security guard at the Tribal Administration Building for three years until his health forced him to retire.
He was a member of the United Church of Christ, the Water Buster Clan and a child of the Flint Knife Clan.
Survivors: wife, Miriam of New Town; sons, Marc, Keath and Jefferson III, all of New Town; daughters, Kathleen De La Rosa of Grand Forks and Gloria Smith of Goshen, Oh.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters, Miriam Wilkinson of Havre, Mt., Rachel Bell, Almeda Baker and Dixie Howling Wolf, all of New Town and Shirley White of White Shield.

Lester Ummen, 74

Lester Ummen, 74, of Great Bend, Ks., died Friday, Dec. 29, in a Halsted, Ks., medical center.
Survivors: wife, Ruth; daughter, Karla Eisele; son, Mark; and sister, Edna Enerson of Stanley.

Milo Undhjem, 83

Milo Clarence Undhjem, 83, of Minot, formerly of Powers Lake, died Saturday, Dec. 30, in a Minot nursing home. His funeral will be Wednesday, Jan. 3 at 11 a.m. in Holy Cross Lutheran Church, with burial in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Columbus.
He was born June 26, 1917, in rural Columbus to Melvin and Cora Undhjem. He was raised and educated in the Columbus area.
In 1962, he married Nina Lundstad in Columbus. He owned and operated Undhjem Trucking for many years. He managed the Stampede Elevator near Columbus for more than 29 years. He owned and operated the M&N Bar and Lounge in Powers Lake for many years. His wife died in 1985. In 1994, he went to live with his daughter in Minot. He entered Trinity Nursing Home in 1997.
Survivors: daughter, Michelle Zuck of Minot; four grandchildren; brother, Allen of Columbus.
