Harriet V. Duckworth
CROOKSTON -- Harriet V. Duckworth, 92, Crookston, died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, in Riverview Nursing Home, Crookston, where she had lived since Oct. 9, 1996.
Harriet Vivian Foss was born Jan. 12, 1907, the daughter of Peter and Carrie (Schustrum) Foss, in Detroit Lakes, Minn. She attended school in Crookston. She married
Leonard Duckworth on Dec. 30, 1922, in Crookston. They traveled after Leonard's retirement in 1967. He died May 13, 1971.
She is survived by sons, Leonard (Arlene), Crookston, and Robert (Doreen), Mesa, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Gladys Hong, Crookston, and Lucille Turner, Seattle; and sisters-in-law, Connie Foss, Olympia, Wash., and Leona Foss, St. Helena, Calif.
She was preceded in death by a son, Donald; a daughter, Lenore; a grandson; brothers, Ben and Glenn; and a daughter-in-law, Jeanne Duckworth.
Services: 1: 30 p.m. Friday, Wesley United Methodist Church, Crookston.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home, Crookston, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston.
Maurice M. Maygra
CROOKSTON -- Maurice M. Maygra, 81, Crookston, died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, in Riverview Hospital, Crookston.
Maurice M. Maygra was born March 23, 1918, the son of Gasper and Courina (Brault) Maygra, near Crookston, where he attended school. He worked on the family farm. He joined the U.S. Army on Aug. 3, 1941 and served until Aug. 22, 1945. He married
Lucille Brule on Aug. 7, 1945. They operated a grain and beef and dairy operation on the Maygra farmstead. He retired in 1984. Lucille Maygra died April 7, 1986. He continued to live on the farm.
He is survived by a son, Richard (Pamela), Crookston; a daughter, Charlene (R. Scott) McAllen, Detroit Lakes, Minn.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Fred (Adeline), Crookston; and a sister, Cecelia (Johnny) Leon, Cloquet, Minn.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Friday, St. Peter's Catholic Church, Gentilly, Minn.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: St. Peter's Cemetery.
Military rites: Crookston Veterans Council (Stenshoel-Houske, Crookston).
Lamarvo F. Howard
PARK RIVER, N.D. -- Lamarvo F. Howard, 87, Park River, formerly of Edinburg, N.D., died Monday, April 26, 1999, in Good Samaritan Center, Park River.
Lamarvo F. Howard was born Jan. 18, 1912, the daughter of Ernest and Gertrude (Lety) Howard, in Edinburg, where she attended school. She worked as a household employee for several families in Edinburg, and later took care of her mother. She moved to Borg Homes, Mountain, N.D., in February 1991 and to the Good Samaritan on April 8, 1992.
She is survived by nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Lawrence and Lester "Casey"; and sisters, Lucile Schoonover, Laura Kertz and Bernice Windingland.
Services: 3 p.m. Friday, Trinity Lutheran Church, Edinburg.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Edinburg (Tollefson, Edinburg).
Elsie M. Porter
Elsie M. Porter, 90, Grand Forks, died April 17, 1999, in Valley Memorial Home-Eldercare.
Elsie Mae McAdam was born Oct. 12, 1908, the daughter of Charles and Mary (Hill) McAdam, in Hannah, N.D., where she attended school. She attended Valley City (N.D.) State Teachers College. She moved to Hannibal, Mo., where she was a home companion to Mrs. White. She returned to Hannah, where she worked as a telephone operator. She married
Ernest Porter on June 14, 1938, in Hannah. They farmed north of Hannah until 1957, when they moved to St. Petersburg, Fla. Ernest Porter died April 7, 1964. She returned to Grand Forks four years ago.
She is survived by a stepdaughter, Lois (Bob) Axtman, Grand Forks; a stepson, Gordon (Irma), Fargo; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Cliff and Walter; and a sister, Aileen Bohn.
Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Valley Memorial Home-Eldercare.
Burial: St. Petersburg. Memorials are suggested to Seminole (Fla.) United Methodist Church (Norman, Columbia Road).
Myrtle Thorson
LANGDON, N.D. -- Myrtle Thorson, 82, Langdon, formerly of Hampden, N.D., died Sunday, April 25, 1999, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
Myrtle Bjorland was born Jan. 31, 1917, the daughter of Tobias and Greta (Haaland) Bjorland, in Storlie Township, Cavalier County, N.D., where she attended school. She married
Iver Harveland in 1938 in Devils Lake. They lived in Hampden. He died in 1949. She married
Henry Thorson in 1965 in Crookston. He died in 1973. In 1998, she moved to Langdon.
She is survived by daughters, Marlys (Ken) Loewen, Alsen, N.D., and Carol (Alden) Veer, Langdon; stepdaughters, Doris (Leonard) Lien, Devils Lake, and Elaine (Gerald) Knutt, Rock Lake, N.D.; sons, Elden (Jan) Harveland, Fargo, and Wayne (Linda) Harveland, Seattle; a stepson, Robert Thorson, Bend, Ore.; 28 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; a brother, John, Langdon; and a sister, Edna Ohma, Osnabrock, N.D.
She was preceded in death by a son, Gordon Harveland; a daughter, Arlene Stewart; a great-granddaughter; brothers, Peter, Thoralf, Byron and Trygve; and sisters, Margaret, Violet, Agnes, Gyda, Mabel and Thressa.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Zoar Free Lutheran Church, Hampden.
Visitation: 3 to 9 p.m. today, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, Brooks Funeral Home, Langdon, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Storlie Cemetery, Hampden.
Alice E. O'Gorman
Alice E. O'Gorman, 100, formerly of Grand Forks, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, in Little Company of Mary Pavillion, Torrance, Calif.
Alice Eileen Grimes was born Aug. 18, 1898, the daughter of Edgar and Alice (Barger) Grimes, in Franklin, Minn. She worked for Western Union as a telegrapher. She married
Charles O'Gorman on Jan. 3, 1924, in Belle Prairie, Minn. She was a secretary for the Grand Forks Chamber of Commerce until retiring. Charles O'Gorman died Sept. 22, 1982.
She is survived by sons, Bill (Sherry), Crookston, and David (Jeanne), Devils Lake; a daughter, Kathleen Bowalski, Torrance; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and sisters, Marjorie Kerick, Torrance, and Patricia McLaughlin, in Florida.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Eileen O'Gorman; a brother, Leo; and sisters, Beatrice LaForce, Marie Boecker and Janice Brown.
Services: 9: 30 a.m. Friday, St. Michael's Catholic Church, Grand Forks.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Norman Funeral Home, Columbia Road.
Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Grand Forks.
