Margaret Landstrom, 87
Margaret “Peggy” Landstrom, 87, Tucson, Ariz., died Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011 in Hospice Family Care in Tucson.
A memorial mass to celebrate Peggy will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011 at St. Cyril’s Church, 4725 East Pima in Tucson.
Margaret Sleeper was born Nov. 3, 1923 in Long Prairie, Minn., to Luella and Wilbur Sleeper. She often spoke of her happy childhood living in the railroad depot in Woburn, N.D., where her father was the depot agent.
Peggy married
Willard “Bill” Landstrom Sept. 11, 1943 in Roswell, N.M. She worked at St. Francis Hospital in the personnel office for many years before retiring to Tucson.
Peggy was an avid reader of all subjects and she compiled dozens of photo albums of her family that she loved so dearly.
She was preceded in death by her true love, Bill May 31, 1968.
She is survived by her children, Jon (Vera) Landstrom, Dureen (Lon) Berg and Donald Landstrom; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Jean Bolstad, 79
Jean Bolstad, 79, Wahpeton, N.D., died Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011 at St. Francis Healthcare Campus, Breckenridge, Minn.
A memorial funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, 2011 at St. Catherine’s Living Center Chapel, Wahpeton, with the Rev. Morris Stephens officiating. Inurnment will be at Peace Lutheran Cemetery, Barney, N.D.
Jean Evelyn Bolstad was born Feb. 25, 1932 in Wahpeton, to Harold and Nelda (Muehlberg) Bolstad. She attended Ibsen Elementary and Antelope Consolidated schools. She was a willing, helpful person to many people; cleaning homes and babysitting children. She enjoyed music, playing cards and games and being around pets.
Jean entered St. Catherine’s Living Center in 2002 following a fall in her home which resulted in a fractured pelvis. She spent the rest of her life as a resident there, where she received loving and excellent care. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton, ND.
She is survived by two sisters, Gloria McLeod, Camarillo, Calif., and Maxine Murray, Montrose, Colo.; one brother, Darold Bolstad, Corcoran, Calif.; special friend, Mary Joyce Breuer, Wahpeton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Nelda Bolstad; a niece, Deborah Murray; and a brother-in-law, Bill Murray.
Vertin-Munson Funeral Home in Wahpeton was in charge of the arrangements.
Merle P. Johnson, 82
Merle P. Johnson, 82, Wahpeton, N.D., died Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011 at St Francis Healthcare Campus, Breckenridge, Minn.
The funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2011 at Bethel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton, with the Rev. Jim Gustafson officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Memorial Gardens, Wahpeton.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10, 2011 with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Willow Creek Chapel, Wahpeton. There will also be visitation one hour before the service at the church Tuesday.
Merle Percy Johnson was born Jan. 27, 1929, the son of Gifford and Myrtle (Jacobson) Johnson in Wahpeton. He grew up on farms in Galchutt, N.D., and Dwight, ND. He moved with his family to Wahpeton shortly after starting first grade in Dwight. He was baptized at Faith Lutheran Church in Dwight and confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Church of Wahpeton, where he and his wife were still members.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the end of his junior year, but did graduate with his class from Wahpeton High School in 1947. Upon his discharge, he returned to Wahpeton and worked for Agnew Chevrolet. After a short time, he began working for Sturdevant’s Auto Electric, where he helped set up their parts inventory system and became their Minnesota outside salesman. In 1954 he started employment with the Wahpeton Post Office and worked his way through the ranks to become superintendent of postal operations until he retired in 1984.
Merle was united in marriage to Betty Wateland May 24, 1950. This marriage was blessed with three children: Cynthia, Scott, and a son, Timothy, who died in infancy. He was a dedicated husband and father who dearly loved his family and was proud of them. He enjoyed their many endeavors and projects.
Merle was a life-long scout and was an assistant scoutmaster. He was also active in the Junior Chamber of Commerce and a past member of the Elks, the Sons of Norway and a lifetime member of the VFW.
Merle enjoyed anything to do with engines: cars, boats and snowmobiles. He enjoyed the lakes with his family and was a multi-talented “do it yourselfer, ” who enjoyed the challenge of problem-solving. He enjoyed working with computers, cooking and golfing.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Johnson, Wahpeton; a daughter, Cindy Korstad, Fargo, N.D.; a daughter-in-law, Lucinda Johnson, Wahpeton; his grandson, Blake Johnson; his granddaughter, Alecia (Ryan) Hasbargen; his great-granddaughters, Jazzlyn and Emmy Hasbargen; and his sister-in-law, Esperanza Johnson, San Diego, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gifford and Myrtle Johnson; his sons, Timothy and Scott Johnson; and two brothers, Howard and Roger Johnson.

Olivia McFarland, 97
Olivia McFarland, 97, Gwinner, N.D., died Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011 at St. Francis Nursing Home, Breckenridge, Minn., under the care of Riveredge Hospice.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 10, 2011 at Gustaf Adolf Lutheran Church, Gwinner, N.D. Burial will be at the Gwinner Cemetery
near Gwinner.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011 with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Gustaf Adolf Lutheran Church.
Olivia Meinhardt, daughter of Ingolf and Karen (Godo) Meinhardt, was born April 9, 1914 at Gwinner, where she grew up and attended school.
She graduated from Gwinner High School in 1934 and then was employed in the Twin Cities, Minn., area.
Olivia returned home and married
Raymond J. McFarland Aug. 26, 1942. In 1947, they purchased the blacksmith shop from Ingolf; and renamed it Gwinner Metal Products, which was later renamed to Ray-Mac, Inc.
The couple made their home west of Gwinner, where they also farmed and raised their five children.
Raymond passed away Nov. 15, 1998. Olivia remained in her home in Gwinner until November of 2009 when she entered St. Francis Nursing Home in Breckenridge, Minn.
Olivia had a love for animals, flowers, poetry, Christian music, children and she especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren whenever she could.
She was a member of Gustaf Adolf Lutheran Church, the Legion Auxiliary, and also a member of the Senior Citizens.
She is survived by two sons, David (Linda) McFarland, Gwinner, and Keith (Pam) McFarland, Wahpeton, N.D.; three daughters: Donna (Gene) Gast, Watertown, S.D., Karen (Jim) Crider, Slocomb, Ala., and Kay (Al) Olson, Sioux Falls, S.D.; one brother, Carl Meinhardt, Wadena, Minn.; one sister, Marie Rubino, Palo Alto, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Betty McFarland, Orange Beach, Ala., and Marvel Robinson, Lisbon, N.D.; 15 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren, with one on the way; and many nieces and nephews.
Olivia was preceded in death by her parents, Ingolf and Karen Meinhardt; her husband, Raymond McFarland; a brother, Bernard Meinhardt; a sister, Elsie Bennett; two infant brothers; three grandsons; and a daughter-in-law, Karen.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff at St. Francis Nursing Home, Riveredge Hospice, and former caregivers, Shelly Bjerke and Sue Howey for the wonderful care they provided to Olivia.

Paul Strege, 50
Paul Strege, 50, Milnor, N.D., formerly Wyndmere, N.D., died Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011 at Sanford Health, Fargo, N.D.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011 at Wyndmere Lutheran Church, Wyndmere, with the Rev. Bob Caranicas officiating. Interment
will be at Elk Creek Cemetery, Wyndmere.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2011 with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Willow Creek Chapel, Wahpeton, and one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday.
Paul Richard Strege was born June 13, 1961, the son of Elmer and Mildred (Rasmussen) Strege. He grew up near Wyndmere and attended Wyndmere Schools, graduating from high school in 1979. He started employment with Nelson Implement, Milnor, in 1983. In 1992, Paul suffered a stroke, but with the dedication of his brother David and the willingness of his employer, Paul continued to stay active, working for Nelson Implement, now Green Iron Equipment, Milnor.
Paul enjoyed softball, golf and basketball, when he was able to participate, and in recent years focused on watching and cheering for the Minnesota Vikings and Twins.
Paul is survived by his mother, Mildred Strege, Lidgerwood, N.D.; three brothers and a sister: David Strege, Milnor, Daryl Strege, rural Lidgerwood, N.D., Chuck (Kami) Strege, Wyndmere, Sharlene, (John) Allen, Barnesville, Minn.; his nieces and nephews; Courtney, Miranda and Alyssa Allen, and Cody, Megan, and Parker Strege; aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Elmer Strege.
